- Throughout the entirety of NFL history, the wide receiver position has always been the greatest crowd catcher in the game of American Football. But have you ever wondered how the wide receiver position in football has evolved through the years? Well, hopefully, you have because in this video I am going to be breaking down to you the complete history of the wide receiver position in the NFL. Anyway, if you enjoyed this video, then like and comment if you want, and you can even subscribe if you think I've earned it.
Nowadays we see NFL players like Ja'marr Chase and Justin Jefferson continue to push the evolution of the wide receiver forward. But before them, there were cornerstones of the wide receiver position such as Calvin Johnson, Jerry Rice, and Randy Moss among others. So I made this NFL history documentary on the evolution of the NFL and the reasons the wide receiver position looks like it does today.

Just wanted to say as a European who is slowly getting into NFL, your content is amazing, great blend of facts/history and current events. Keep up the great work and hope this channel keeps on growing cause it's amazing
have you picked a squad yet?
Always great to see Europeans getting into the nfl! Enjoy this season!
the team you want to follow is the texans they've won the past 7 super bowls
@@insertnamehere9950 there also the only team with 2 undefeated seasons
@@bmfsnc8466 exactly sometimes it makes me sad that i chose to be a packers fan if only i knew
I wanna see one evolution video on Offensive Lineman because it’s pretty wild.
The 1962 Packers are considered one of the GOAT teams and this is their starting o lineman.
6’4’ 250 Forrest Gregg
6’3’ 245 Jerry Kramer
6’1’ 232 Jim Ringo
6’3’ 249 Bob Skoronski
6’1’ 247 Fuzzy Thurston
Derrick Henry, a RB, is as big as these dudes and probably much more athletic.
Some QBs like Josh Allen and Justin Herbert are bigger than these guys.
Nowadays offensive lineman are well over 300 lbs and it’s been like that since probably the late 1980s.
I’m thinking maybe DB’s next but we’ll see
I’m sure they were units for their era 😂😂😂 it does seem small for an o lineman but considering the era, I bet they were dawgs‼️ Mon-Stars
Derek Henry would have run for 2000 miles a year against 60s linemen and line backers. The defensive backs would get out run.
people im general just were not as big 🤷♂️
Love the way he just casually slips in the face reveal rather than making a big deal out of it
unlike a certain UA-camr..
@@tysulliii889 that guy can dream on..
hopefully he does a football tights reveal 😄 cuz i really like football thats it
Bob Hayes should be in this, for being the king of speed (others had been quick, but Hayes forced the invention of Zone coverage). Also a note about contact rules, many 60s and 70s receivers look kind of bulky now (Max McGee looks like a tight end, Warfield was rather big). But they had to fight off unlimited bumping (and run block). This is the hidden reason Alworth (and Rice for most of his career) played flanker, harder to jam them.
Hidden effect #2, Having Fears and Hirsch starting made it hard to find snaps for another potential star, so Dick Lane got moved to Cornerback (and set the interception record his rookie year).
Yea he missed Bob Hayes
These complete history videos u make must take so long. Really appreciate the vids man, very few are as good as yours!
You missed BIG on the 2010's. The evolution of the slot receiver. Slot receivers have undergone a complete Renaissance over the last decade.
But otherwise it was a fun watch! You put out good content.
Randy Moss was absurdly good at getting open and catching anything in his vicinity
He ran far faster than it appeared he was running too which was kinda wild the one time I got to see it in person. It answered the question I had about why I saw so many bad angles from defenders. Tyreek hill looks like he is running fast which is why he's cheetah but Moss was smooth like a gazelle with almost a cheetah top speed. If you were even with moss at 5 yds that hand went up because you were beat.
The Rams with Holt and Bruce showed us something, too. Holt still holds several significant records.
Tubfrong is goated fr
I never thought about the fact that Don Hutson was playing both ways when he was putting up those way-ahead-of-their-time WR numbers.
I really love these videos, it's clear how much research goes into it. Very cool to see the people involved in developing each position over time
Great job! Thanks for your research and presentation
Love the video. Your hard works shows. You're quite talented and wish you continued success!
These position videos are amazing dude, great stuff!!!
The best underrated channel out there you deserve more recognition

Every other NFL UA-camr should be taking notes on your content, your presentation, your expertise of the game and your top notch effort. You are the Jerry Rice of NFL UA-camrs 💯👍🏼💪
This is my favorite NFL UA-cam channel. keep it up

Keep up the great work yo
Love your work bro keep it up
Awesome video and content!!
Great video man, keep up the good work!
Really killin it with the face cam edits my dude hilarious :)
Great video as always. It’s interesting how in the 2000s how big some of the receivers were. Now in 2020s, the receivers are much more slight in build
Thanks for doing this video 💯
From what I've heard, what separated Jerry Rice from everybody else: his level of work ethic. He was better that everyone else and he was absolutely committed to spending the entire year making sure he stayed that way. He also had his act together. Contrast him to most of the top WRs from the 21st century. Guys like Moss and Owens might have had more talent than Rice, but they were their own worst enemies.
But yeah he was in the perfect storm: his talent, playing in pass-happy offensive schemes, great QBs, and incredible health. Not only did he play 20 years, he had one season where he missed most of the year with a knee injury but otherwise never missed a single game due to injury.
Love his vids most underrated football youtuber ever
Thank you for More great content
u deserve way more recognition bro
Your videos are awesome bro.
Tubfrog will randomly release the most amazing random videos. You got some of the best content out here
I fell out of watching football for a number of years, the best part of the last decade tbh and recently got back into it this season and found your channel a month or two ago. Your content is fucking great. I've binged at least a good 25 of your vids at this point and look forward to more. Cheers.
These vids are so entertaining and informative. Keep up the great content man you’ll make it big eventually 👍
This is seriously some ELITE content.... keep up the work and i wont be surprised a bit when you reach 1million vues per video as some mainstreams NFL youtubers do.

best nfl content on yt
i find it really cool that you did a face reveal...keep the content up your gonna pop off soon!
Great story telling 👏
hey love your vids! quick suggestion, work on framing from the camera, it’s weird seeing from your eyebrows down.
Nice job on this video. Basically, I agree with your WR of evolution impact though I think you should have also included Chiefs WR, Otis Taylor, as a major game changer.
As a casual fan I would love more evolution videos whenever you get the time .
Thanks for video look good
Should’ve mentioned Steve largent a little more, bro was considered the greatest wide receiver in NFL history when he retired
Great content, do we really need 30 face zoom ins tho 😂
🚨 Banger alert 🚨
Might be your best yet
Nicely done. I'm thinking of a similar deep dive on the evolution of receivers and dbs pre and post defenseless receiver rules...
For instance, you never hear the phrase, "this guy can work the middle of the field"...cuz everyone can, defenses can't just take guys heads off to discourage sending faster, more talented receivers over the middle anymore.
Wr rooms used to have a couple slow guys who could work the middle and not die just so offenses could utilize that part of the field at all.
Basically the evolution of the receiver and the rules governing the passing game have led to the extinction of slow "over the middle recevers" as well as hatcet men more commonly referred to as "box safeties" in polite company lol.
It's my belief that modern rules have produced a less violent but still very physical and much more elegant and refined game.
A game I find even more entertaining than watching jack Tatum keep the sabbath holy by legally committing attempted murder every sunday lol
Anyway, keep up the good work!
Upload more😕 your videos are so valid
I wish I could, but I’m doing my best bro 2 uploads a week with college and social shit is tough. Also I’m doing everything myself so I can’t just up the productivity without suffering a loss in quality.
0:02 wow I was not expecting that but nice face
The symmetry of the CFL with 2 WIDE RECIVERS and 2 SLOTBACKS as SLOT RECIEVERS is noteable.
12 players on the field per team is why of course.
Great video. Love the content. The Corps, in Marine Corps is pronounced "core" not "corpse"
Long tubfrog video LFG
I would love to see the evolution of the NFL draft if you haven’t done it already. Thanks
Good show
Odell & Mike Evans HAVE to be in that 2010'S group you called @ 20:00
Handsome man! But your face is uncomfortably close to the camera. Great video and research, your channel is awesome!
I wanna see cornerbacks the hardest position yo play physically. Great vid
There’s just something about that bowl-cut that makes him perfect for football.
TubFrog face reveal w
Not to be a contrarian to you timeline but I encourage you to look at Bob Hayes. The 1964 Gold Medalist and Dallas Cowboy redefined the position in the NFL while Lance Alworth was scorching defenses in the AFL. One of the most lasting effects of his presence was placing the fastest athletes on the OPPOSITE side of the ball in order to defend against the “world’s fastest man”. His lifetime 7000+ yards 70+ TDs is a testament to how much of an impact he had. Jimmy Johnson, the 49ers HOF corner back, actually played offense for SF in the early 60s and was, like Hayes, a fellow Olympian.
Seems like in the late 2000s, early 2010s the wes welker model of receiver became fairly prominent.
A.b. being the pinnacle of that imo
Billy Howton gets over looked a lot in the mid1950' to mid 1960's TO me ? And I just do NOT understand how he's NOT in the HOF , to this day !
Great
I don't think I have enough lotion for the video...
Could u do a linebacker evolution video?
ciuld you do a Corner Back/Safety version? you dont have to if you dont want to
14:10 phone ringing in background, vid ruine d
In all seriousness though, it's insane the amount of effort that went into this. Great stuff as always
Also, I would change the camera angle. It feels weird with it cutting off the top of your head. Just my opinion tho
W video
T O is my second favorite football player of all time
Moss is the peak of WR ability, he was much quicker than Calvin
No love for Steve Largent? I get it: in the 80s, Rice was the man. Head and shoulders over everyone else. But Largent was a phenomenal receiver in his own right. And he didn't have the benefit of playing with 2 HOF QBs
You forgot another great QB/ receiver(s) duo which epitomised the very offensive system created by a coach that would not only change the very manner in which offences play today, but cause the very way defence in the NFL is played and the size of line backers and line men are today vs. 40 yrs, even 30 yrs ago. Don Coryell's "Air Coryell" that was lead on the field by Dan Fouts throwing to receivers Charlie Joiner, Wes Chandler and Kellen Winslow, not to forget the incredible catches of John Jefferson early in Coryell's term as head coach (78-81 when Jefferson was traded to Green Bay amid a contract impass). I know there are loads of great receiving examples and limited time length of your video, but I just feel that any one of the 4 receivers I mentioned is a mistake to leave out if your purpose is to explain the receiver position and it's evolution.
i think that coryell had more influence than sid gillman
My dad played with Crazylegs Hirsch in the Marine Corp.
finally !
nice to know joe jonas runs this channel
Really... no mention of bullet Bob Hayes? Also Paul Warfield in many people's eyes IS the best wr of all time, he should have gotten more than just a mention... keep up the great work 👍
You forgot about the short but scrappy WR build like Steve Smith Sr., Wes Welker, Julian Edelman and Hunter Renfrow
I love your videos but how in tf yu have this list with NO BOB HAYES 😮
Before I even watch this video. Don Hutson better be on this list b!
I was surprised u never mentioned how the slot receiver became a part of an ngl offense since players like Wes Welker made their career by running short routes to perfection
Broooo I swear when I heard your voice I always imagined Topher Grace
