  • Jim McVittae was the petrolhead mowing with a powered finger bar scythe against the most humble of tools, the scythe. Trouble was he used to high a gear and panicked, each strip of grass was double the width of the BCS power scythe bar. For more on mowing with a scythe and Wimpole see this blog sadeik.wordpre... or just google 'wympole'

    • @damiaan7021
      @damiaan7021 3 роки тому +16

@@samuelrs5138 except that using a scythe is mostly in the hips and legs, by twisting your hips and adding a bit of leg power you move the scythe around, your arms are just maintaining a steady height and angle. I recall that same guy making a video about how to use a scythe and as with a lot of historical farming tools you see that they find out how to get as much work done as possible with minimal effort. But ofcourse it is always more tiring than simply using a machine.

    • @music9170

It got jammed, pretty easy to jam if going too quickly than what the machine can handle and how much gas it uses. Where as the old fashioned Scythe is only limited by the users endurance and the occasional quick resharpening of the bade. The Scythe is cheaper than any machine as it does not require fuel and lubricants to operate and use, nor does it cost as much at the time of initial purchase.

After an exciting and fairly long race, John Wayne and the horses won. Right after, the Engineer said "Congratulations on your win.... let's race again to the next crossing". Wayne said "no, my team needs to rest" to which the Engineer replied "my rig could do that race 25 times in a row - and win 24 of the 25 times".

That is not a mower, that is a walk behind tractor and it is pushing a scythe. Scythe blades get clogged, as you noticed him being stuck for a while. The operator was actually pushing the tractor too fast through the grass which was giving him problems. Also with grass like that, you wouldnt want to use your full scythe blade or it would jam, just like how when you most the lawn you overlap your runs so its easier on the mower if the grass is tall.
Point is, its a tractor not a mower, there is a huge difference (as well between a scythe and a mower attachment on the same walk behind tractor)

It is a great tool with a longer handle and reaches the ground without breaking your knees, tires you less and mows a wider range of grasses.

I imagined a story, once, about a scythewieldor who was beyond compare. One day, a guy in a death costume comes out to mow a field with him. The Death Guy had a blade that seemed to grow and shrink as the day went along. And, as hard as he would try, the scythewieldor couldn't get ahead of his rival.
At one point, the scythewieldor voices his interest in the Death Guy's scythe. Of course, the Death Guy offers him a try with his blade. As soon as the scythewieldor took hold of the scythe, he felt a chill not right for the season.
The scythewieldor wondered, out loud, at his sudden sense of the cold. So, Death Guy offers his costume to the scythewieldor.
Scythewieldor began mowing like he'd never mowed before. He was so transfixed by the amazing instrument, he lost sense of time. He mowed all night long. He never got tired of it.
When dawn can came, Death Guy was gone.
    The scythewieldor just kept going.
    He's still mowing.

Mowers are operated by humans, therefore misuse is factored in to any usage. And occasionally it *will* be the machine itself failing.
Scythes don't fail mid-session, and tbh a person using one rarely would either.
Honestly if you consider all pros vs cons, scythes would be the superior choice in all but the most extreme (essentially industrial or very large scale) use cases.

Some times a scyth is preferable tool, becaus a feild is so over grown you would need a tractor to clear it as the grass would choke most mowers. My sister broke three push mowers just getting th grass around her house. They now have a large rider but you see my point.
