Funny how the heat damage comments are always followed by directions to do a “big chop”. I remember big chop “shaming “-if you didn’t do a big chop then you couldn’t be natural-secretly just wanting the other girl to cut her hair off😂

I heard this all the time back in 2012 (I had been getting relaxers so long, I forgot my hair was curly). I got heavy judgment for choosing to transition versus chopping.

YES omg! people don't seem to understand that sometimes depending on products or the length of your hair, it can weigh your curls down, causing them to stretch. you don't have to chop your hair off every time your curl stretches a little bit!

@ExoticalsUnited omgosh this explains so much. UAB girl told my daughter she needed to chop her hair cos it's fried. She wears her hair natural and doesn't want to put weaves, wigs, or tons of heat in her hair anymore & that's her right. She wants to wear it however she wants to for almost 3 yrs now. There's nothing wrong with her hair. It just depends on the products she uses and it's also the fact that she has a few different hair types, as a lot of humans do. Because of the harassment, she hates her hair but she's still standing her ground. She talks about how much she hates it all the time and idk what to do. I tell her it's beautiful and strangers tell her all the time but it's not enough. I don't want her to feel she's inferior just because she chooses to wear her natural afro. She doesn't wanna go to salons anymore cos she likes doing it herself. Its grown so long and I just don't see the issue with it.

Women who cut their hair short are also berated. I have had some negative experiences from some black women with relaxers when I said I decided to cut off my hair when I stopped using chemicals. These are people who ASKED me about my story because I make a point never to comment or bring up hair with anyone who is relaxed or has wig/weave because of my past negative interactions.I have no interest in dealing with two textures or damage hair. I have cut my hair short other times in my life for various reasons as have other women in my family. I wasn’t raised to see this as a big deal. I saw a TON of negative comments about Rhianna cutting her hair short. Seems like some some black women equate their beauty and value to the length of their hair. Any time I watch a FB video of a black women cutting her long hair short there are a bunch of pissed off women in the comments. There is an entire culture that is not my own where people love to throw out “bald headed” as an insult despite that some black women prefer their hair short.

I think black women and black people in general all over the world just don’t covet natural hair and “quintessential” black features. I remember when my mama went natural and she has 4C hair, my NIGERIAN grandfather told her that she needed to straighten her hair again and so did my grandma. My uncles (her brothers) teased her… I all
But cussed them out and went to war for my mama to wear her natural hair. But it took a toll on her confidence in the look….we tried, but the natural hair movement was very superficial.

I think what happened with the natural hair movement was that everyone loved the IDEA of natural hair but when it comes to the natural hair movement on a mental level, everyone still thinks that natural hair is “nappy, not elegant and presentable” to wear to important events. If the black community wants to revive the natural hair movement, then they need to dive head first on the negative connotations and the real reason why everyone does not like to wear natural hair

That confused many actual rc hair women. If you typed in 4c hair you got lightskin women with 3b hair. It was actually hard to find accurate 4c representation because a lot of exotical women mislabeled themselves.

This philosophy about natural femcels is true in more ways than one. It’s a misery loves company type of vibe. It’s also another one-sided competition. Whether a girl wants to be bald, permed, weaved-up or wear her fro no one should have anything to say about it.

Black women shouldn't go natural for men, because these men are lying, most don't want short 4c hair. When they say they want natural hair, they usually have at least 4a long hair in mind. I see all kinds of videos of women wearing a short 4c afro and say no men approached them with that hairstyle. And I've gotten so many envious comments from other women about my long hair, like you said, trying to tell me it's frizzy if i dont put any product in it that day or tell me I should do this or that with my hair, I should cut it etc.

I always compliment wavy to curly to coily hair. My Jewish family doctor has a beautiful curly afro and encouraged me to wear my coily afro. I'm grateful to her. Made me realize I have options.

I went natural right before the natural hair movement really started to kickoff but it was more survival based for me. I was graduating hs and going to college on scholarship so I didn’t know if I would have a job where I moved for school and my weave and relaxers would be hundreds of dollars a month sooo w/ no income I figured I should do more sustainable hair. Also no internet access and other black women to teach me so I flat iron my hair daily and it broke off at the top really bad so it needed to be cut off anyway so starting twisties to let them loc up was a reasonable alternative.
Plus some guy my mom was sleeping w/ taught me how he Retwist was his hair in jail and it was super affordable and efficient so problem solved. It was just weird having half an inch of hair.
This was also right when Chris Rocks “Good Hair” movie came out and it influenced my 18 yr old self to no longer want the creamy crack.
And I took an easier way into it bc I have locs not loose natural hair.
Now I used to want different styles so I would watch videos to get ideas on how to style my love and just do the loc version of it.
I did used to be mad at ppl a lil bit for being relaxed then I quickly realized the relaxed hair eatssss and still shows black girl ingenuity so I love it like I used to. I love the variety.
Also I was a lil disillusioned when I found out some ppl where relaxing their edges and pretending they had good hair lol.

I wear my hair as natural. I can see other black women unspokenly wondering why I don’t plait it or straighten or weave etc. I have even had well meaning friends and others including my daughter’s contemporaries asking me what I intend to ‘do’ with my hair for significant events, or encouraging me to wear plaits! However I won’t be intimidated or shamed into anything. I used to relax my hair as a young woman but at 61 I have decided that my natural hair ‘rocks’! I love it, even when it looks less than what others would think was great. I try to keep it as tidy as possible but I won’t be shamed about my hair in the way that we as black women have had to endure for so long, unfortunately and sadly by our own race included. Here’s to loving and rocking my natural hair!!!

I just listened to this whole video while showering LOL I think some are turning back to relaxers for a few reasons:
    1. Many have realized that there is no magic product or routine that will give them the length or texture they desire
    2. Relaxers are an easier styling option for some. Natural hair can be too time-consuming depending on length & texure
    3. They simply want a new look
I've had natural hair my entire life, so I've had decades of understanding what my hair needs. It has never been as serious for me as it seems to be for so many women in cyberspace. I do wish that more women were comfortable wearing their real hair, relaxed or natural. Simply bc it's sad to see so many women with alopecia and such weakend hair from wearing wigs and weaves all their lives.
As long as Black women are looking beautiful w healthy hair that is their own, I support it. Relaxed or Natural.

Years ago, I wore relaxers because it was easier to comb through my hair, to be honest. However, after some of my hair broke off due to the mixture of medication and relaxers, I ended up embracing my natural hair. Now, if I want straight hair, I wear a wig. Locs is black women way of having coveted long hair and still being natural. I've seen this a lot. Women want to be a 3c natural, cant, then go to locs.

To answer your Q in the video, you don’t go the rest of your life hating your insecurity, you just learn to love and embrace it sis ❤

I think you have to just love yourself and everything else will fall in order/place. Im natural and I love it. It was surreal to see my curls again and my lil coils and just learn, touch, see a new part of myself that was hidden away since i got a perm at 11yrs old. Trial error wit some stuff, but now i kno what works for my hair and im good. I could careless who like it or not. Chile please lol smh. Yall better get yall self esteem up❤..but if it's causing u mental issues then go put that perm in lol and seek therapy.
