Tuba Skinny -- HOW DO THEY DO IT THAT WAY? -- Pismo Beach Jazz Jubilee by the Sea -- 2019

- The 2019 Pismo Beach Jazz Jubilee by the Sea featured over 20 bands in 4 venues the last weekend in October. A new band this year was Tuba Skinny from New Orleans. They played "How Do They Do It That Way?" during their second set on Friday. Franklin Clay Films has uploaded 12 tunes to UA-cam from this Tuba Skinny set: Broken Hearted Blues, Slew Foot, Any Old Time, Bouncing Around, Midnight Blues, Over in the Glory Land, Sweet Potato Blues, Sweet Olive, How Do They do it that Way?, Jazz Battle, All by Myself, and Climax Rag. The musicians were: Shaye Cohn, Barnabus Jones, Todd Burdick, Max Bien-Kahn, Craig Flory, Robin Rupuzzi, Erika Lewis, and Greg Sherman. The crowd was enthusiastic.
Erika Lewis has one of the most amazing, enjoyable, and original voices I've been fortunate to hear.

After all, your opinion of this video (which spans less than five minutes) is surely enough for you to intuit what she may or may not have been thinking or feeling or have been going through. Thank goodness you saved me from wasting any more of my time enjoying their music. Now, I know I must hate them all.

I got hooked on Tuba Skinny by the awesome coronet playing by Shaye, &
learning she trained as a classic pianist, tired of the it & went to New
Orleans Jazz. I played 1st chair trumpet in H.S., as a Freshman over
upper class trumpet players. But, I could nor play by ear, so my rapture
at watching Shaye's mastery of the coronet & piano jazz, as well as
lead the band. Let me assure you, it did not take long for me to me
hooked on the awesome vocal talent of Erica, even as she often beat
a base drum too. I await the end of this CV-19 plague, for when this
awesome band can tour again & return to California. I live in South
Bay Los Angeles but would travel, for a chance to hear Tuba Skinny
in live concert!

However, did you know; "The band's orchestrator and cornetist Shaye Cohn-the granddaughter of jazz saxophonist Al Cohn-is a Bostonian and quite stunning looking I think, she has that look.
Erica is so nonchalant, she just blows me away. The whole ensemble is just brilliant.
They are soooo good!! But I gotta tell ya, the Coronet player is amazing!! And the singer has the perfect voice for the music genre!!! Puts one to mind of Leon Redbone !!
The cornet player is Shaye Cohn, who is the band leader. I agree with you about Erica Lewis' voice. She plays it like an instrument.
I blew into a "Coronet" once and all I got was a mouth full of smoke from the tailpipe

Two Earth angels, one with glasses and one in a dress.............and a bunch of out of this world helpers.
Boy oh boy, Shaye has evolved into a quintessential cornet player. Her ingenuity has always been there. But the rest of it , aside from God given talent, is all practiced and learned. What an absolute blessing it is to listen to her play. Such a clear tone and the volume! AND she doesn’t split every other note like a ton of “ professional “ brass players do. Ya ‘ gotta practice to have endurance, no way around it.
A great "evergreen" in the repertoire of Tuba Skinny. Erica has always the right feeling for this tune. Max with a nice solo.

Of course, the band is wonderful, and this is a tune they love. The videography is impressive. The variety of perspectives keeps us watching. Twice the camera makes a long slow approach, landing on a band member just as they launch a solo. That takes planning and familiarity with the arrangement. Shaye's solo starting at 3:54 is one of her best.
The multiple cameras, the sharp image, the focus on the solo, the camera movement adds new dimensions to my enjoyment of music. Keep it up!

Yes! The uptick in visual and sound quality is overdue and very welcome. I've got to say though, I still love the old videos of the street performances down on Royal Street...with stray dogs wandering by.

I've watched lots of Tuba Skinny street videos which are all great. But it's nice to see this professional quality video with nice editing where we can get clear closeups of the people soloing. Great job Tuba Skinny, and great job FCF with the filming/editing.

Great band, and man oh man do I LOVE that clarinet on this! So sweet and smooth. Only wished I’d found an avenue way back when to perform CREATIVELY on the multiple instruments of which I played. Would have been much more fun and rewarding
