POC originally (the term that came before "POC") only referred to black and mixed race people. It was a way to group black and people mixed with black together in one category. Nowdays it means anyone who isnt the typical western/northern european. Its the same with the term "brown". It used to refer to South asian Dravidian people but now it refers to native americans, South asians, Latinos and south east asians. All these terms are literally meaningless but keep getting overused for certain agendas
South africans are much smarter with how they use the term poc. If i remember correctly, in south africa the only people who are considered people of colour are mixed race and or multiracial people. Basically any person who is has black mixed with something else. At least this doesnt lead to any confusions
The term “Brown” was also used for blk people too. Boney M (who are a blk music group), literally have a song called “Brown Girl in the Ring.” Which was intended for blk girls.

As a black British women, born and raised in London - issues pertaining to race is a mess here and grouping all non whites together as one homogeneous group is big problem which a lot of ‘educated’ blacks who should be leading from the front don’t want to admit. Regarding Murad Murali, I was subscribed to him briefly and then I caught on that he was being disingenuous and was lapping up the glory of being idolised by his followers in the comments - I’m so glad my intuition was right on this. You are SPOT ON- we could never enter their spaces and be considered a voice for their culture which is fine and shows that they have boundaries, but why is it that every other culture does this but us? As a black girl, I’ve been asked, unprovoked I might add, by non black guys i have been talking to engage in race play via text etc. Like no warning signs! At all! This has happened multiple times and it’s and instant block. Fucking yuck. It’s low-key traumatising and it has always left me feeling like a piece of meat can’t lie.

As a latina who is racially half asian and half black the term POC does more harm than good in my opinion. A lot of people who are stereotypically seen as “latinos” outside of America latina are just white people in their Latam countries, and very much benefit from being physically white and at most tan.

Bro, in Canada, BLACK people own stores Black stores. We call them African and Caribbean stores. There was one Asian man that owned a store in my neighbourhood but no one shopped there 😬.
Okay I live in Toronto and literally 95% of our stores are owned by East Asians and Indians. Almost all the hair stores are Korean owned so not sure what you're talking about. And then the very small African/caribbean grocery stores we do have are owned by again asian and indians, with a small minority of them owned by africans and black carribean people. It’s interesting to know the history or reason why south asians ended up owning the black hair businesses in the UK as it was not always the case. I was reading an article which said that South Asians have been involved with black hair products from the beginning in terms of wigs, hair, producing the products and the technical aspects as suppliers so when there was a gap in the UK when the main black owned hair company sold their company, they decided to become suppliers to owners.

I am white but the term POC never sat right with me as it makes white seem the “norm” and everyone else as the other. I also think it erases the differences of so many different cultures. These different cultures from so many different countries and cultures have as much in common as “white” people and culture. I don’t know it just sounds like an easy tick box exercise and I can imagine it feeling slightly dismissive and dismissive
Im white with a mixed race mother so yeah its not my place to say. However, I think people underestimate the danger of pandering. They think that if someone continuously tells them what they want to hear, then they are good people but that's not the case. People who pander literally rely on your problems to stay the same. They need you to be a victim so that they can come and play knight and shining armor. They need your self esteem to be low so that they can exploit your pain. It's easy to take a negative topic and then tell people whatever popular opinion is out there in that community.
It’s very interesting to hear about the hair store thing. Where I live (Sweden) all the African hair stores are owned by East Africans (Ethiopians/Eritreans usually) so I was a bit shocked to hear that those types of stores are not owned by black people in the uk or the us 🤔

In the UK you will find some hair stores owned by black caribbeans but most of the time it is indeed owned by indians or arab people. They literally sell everything from wigs, hair extensions, skin care products to black hair care products. In Germany you will find afro stores owned by africans that sell food and hair products or afro stores that just sell hair products but there are still also a lot of Indian and Arab stores that sell at least african hair extensions or sometimes only black care products but interestingly enough they will still complain about their african costumers which i dont get.

I really don’t like the term POC. POC is most people. I just feel like there is not one issue where all “POC” should be lumped together in terms of treatment. That lessens that perception of how some people are treated and leads to gaslighting. Blk women experience this so much. And the term centers white ppl. I wanted to add this. It was gonna be a reply ,but YT is blocking it. Why would we allow and perpetuate the idea that a minority group can make outliers of us all and oppress us all. It’s not even possible for a minority to oppress the majority. The majority would have to be partaking in some way, there are just too many of us. And one way we do this is by creating these all encompassing terms that minimize our experiences and trauma bonding over our inability it fit into their world.

I'm a black British woman of African descent born and raised in London. I have also travelled very widely too. I have only heard the term 'politically Black' used within academic or more intellectual circles and in this day and age this is extremely rare. The last time I heard the term was maybe more than a decade ago and most of my life and career choices have been motivated by my concerns around human rights, anti-racism and social justice so I am very often engaged in these types of discussions. I also studied these issues at university. I can confidently assert that no one uses that term now and there has recently been quite a lot of backlash even against the term BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic), with Black people wanting distinct recognition of the specific societal injustices and discrimination we face as a collective 'ethnic group'. This is still also quite problematic since there are significant socio-economic and cultural differences between the recent immigrant African population and more established Afro Caribbeans who began migrating to the UK just after the Second World War. In reality Murad Murali is insubstantial and of no meaningful significance. He also has no real power or political influence. What you describe about his former life on the Only Fans platform definitely sounds quite shady and extremely tacky, but I am more interested to know what you think of Kemi Badenoch who is an extreme right wing British Tory MP of full Black African Nigerian Yoruba heritage. Her stance was so racist and extreme that when she stood for the recent contest for leadership of the Conservative Party she was openly supported by far right British white Nazis and nationalists affiliated to the British National Party (BNP). She lost the contest but is still supported by far right factions in the Conservative Party and she has recently been made Secretary of State for Trade. Previously she was the Equalities Minister. In the role she advocated for the banning of the Black Lives Matter movement and rejected any teaching of critical race theory or the British colonial history in schools. She also wanted any teaching about 'white privilege' in the British education system to be banned. There are other Black and Asian politicians who have risen to the highest and most powerful positions in government and they are also hideously right wing, racist Uncle Toms. As Home Secretary Priti Patel has masterminded the policy of deporting all asylum seekers who seek refuge in the UK to Rwanda immediately as soon as they set foot on British shores. This policy which blatantly breaks international law, is now set to continue and maybe become even worse under Suella Braverman who is the new Home Secretary and another South Asian woman. So from this perspective anything being discussed by Murad Murali pales into complete insignificance and he does not deserve the platform you have just given him. I am about to begin a PhD at a UK university. I am pleased to say that my PhD supervisor is an amazingly inspiring and highly intelligent Black woman. There is a fantastic network of Black academics and scholars developing across UK universities and I am very much looking forward to learning from them.
Not to double comment, but I do think its a problem that these "kinks" come from toxic power dynamics. For example, I just realized that the "maid outfit" isn't sexy because it's just a cute outfit like I thought, but because they are actually servants, which made the clothes become sexy because of how they were objectified.I'm sure most people don't care about the outfit, but this is a group who faces so much harassment and abuse even today for the work they do. This is the same for race play, incest and role playing as a little or whatever. Its tied too much to real abuse, and I would never want to participate in that and I would go far away from one who does want to, despite my relative open mind to sexuality.

And while it is not necessarily real, it became real in our minds because we performed it over over and over over a long time so it exist as if it is a truth. As a black British person born in the UK, I haven't never heard politically black (PB) outside of this episode. We have a term called BAME ((which is basically the same as 'people of colour'), that may be used interchangeably with PB. However no-one Chinese person is walking around saying they are PB. I think a lot of this language is born out of people believing all black people are from one monolithic group. Anyway, lovely video. Political black is used regularly in the UK by unions including the Labour Party. That’s probably why you’ve not heard it as you’d have an interest in the work of the unions to know this.
I always hated “people of color”. When I was in college in the 90s, there was this “women of color” poetry slam/seminar where they discussed racism, oppression, etc. One of the poets/panelists was a half white and half Japanese. She pretty much looked like a white woman and you wouldn’t have even known she was half Asian if she hadn’t said so. We know good and well that her experience with “race” could in no way compare to the other black women on the panel. 🙄

the term "POC" means nothing. POC has becoming an umbrella term for every and anything that isnt/ doesnt look germanic or anglo european. "POC" still includes a lot of Caucasian people e.g. caucasian west asians, caucasian latinos etc.. point is it has no meaning and doesnt say anything about a person so i never understand this idea that "POC" automatically meant someone was an "ally" to black pepole or automatically a victim of some kind.
I disagree bc it sounds like you have to experience a certain level of oppression in order to be grouped with black people. That leads to more division. For one example, people who are white passing still experience oppression, especially when they are outspoken about ALL of their heritage. We as black American people keep separating ourselves from Asian, Indigenous, and even Black African people. Everyone knows black people experienced the worst in the western world besides indigenous folk. Refusing to be grouped with those who have more privelege further divides us. Intersectionality exists, but society tries to confine us into boxes, further dividing us. And we feed into it all the time, and this is a prime example of that. We can be Black and a person of color. Umbrella terms unify, and there's nothing wrong with unity, even if it is with someone who is white passing. Another example is how some black people deem mixed or lightskinned people as non black. They are still black, they are just not solely black.
I HATE the term "ppl of color." That phrase bunches "minorities" (I don't like that term either but I use it to make my point more understandable) into 1 category, and we are NOT the same. My experience as a black person is an extremely unique one. Other "minorities" have a much closer proximity to whiteness than I ever will have, and alot of them consciously use that to their advantage. There is no solidarity specifically with black ppl from their end. Alongside the fact that alot of them are honestly just white ppl but of different cultures/ethnicities/nationalities anyway. Alot of them have the same white supremacist mentality towards black ppl as well. I will never consider myself a person of color...I am BLACK/African American/of African descent. And that's that on that.

I attend a high achieving sixth form in the UK( year 12 and 13) and we had no single black teacher and the only black staff were the cooks and each time we had a new receptionist she was black. I had multiple student leadership roles in the school so I constantly fought to get Black teachers hired. We had other Poc ( ie multiple East Asians were math teachers but the head of department was white, many south Asians in the biology department and leader was white etc). Where was this school situated. What was it called? I attend a high achieving school in the U.K. and all the teachers were with south Asian or black. The location of the school says a lot about who will be applying and hired.

In the UK, 'POC' has come from the US and has been pushed by the BBC. We used to know what we were in the UK, I for one have never stopped being African. I identify with what I am, not what I'm not, and whiteness (or not being white which is the real issue) doesn't sit at the centre of my world.

Yes we have to work twice as hard because our countries of origin are not advancing economically or at the same economic/political level as other more stable or wealthy economies. Name me a single black majority country that is at the same economic level as a Korea/China or a western country? Many of the more stable black countries do not own their own economies and are highly dependent on other countries via consumer goods, so yes we need to understand that we have a lot of work to do collectively to catch up to others or else we will continue to be every other group’s punching bag. The issue with some black people in the West is they get too comfortable with the idea of progressiveness. A “progressive society” doesn’t change the power dynamic of people groups it just lulls you to inaction.

A lot of black people and Poc in the Uk used to or still feel the racism here differs to USA as it is covert here whole overt there. The racism we face here in the UK is not direct to your face so some people are able to pretend it doesnt exist. But I am legally Canadian and my experience there and the UK differ. A lot of UK people use the term POC more as our population is so low here and all minorities are 14 percent and this includes white minorities (ie Eastern Europeans etc) so people want to hold on to as many people as possible to not feel like a minority. But I am BLACK, my experience differs from other minorités I can sympathise with others but it’s not the same experience as I feel I face more day to day racism from other minorities majority South Asians. Many south Asians are extremely racist over here and easily say the N word to insult blacks. Many Eastern Europeans use the N word to describe us and others chose to use it as a term for friend which is not right. London has a high percentage of black people also leading to an illusion that we are a lot nationally in the Uk which is false.

As a trans person, I do side eye cis people whose entire perception of transness is 'trans women are women', pronouns and new names. Yet, they are able to be viewed as allies even so far as being invited to speak about transness when their views are simply 'respect people' rather than actually dismantling the gender binary. I also feel the same about men who speak on Andrew Tate. POC originally (the term that came before "POC") only referred to black and mixed race people. It was a way to group black and people mixed with black together in one category. Nowdays it means anyone who isnt the typical western/northern european. Its the same with the term "brown". It used to refer to South asian Dravidian people but now it refers to native americans, South asians, Latinos and south east asians. All these terms are literally meaningless but keep getting overused for certain agendas

As a latina who is racially half asian and half black the term POC does more harm than good in my opinion. A lot of people who are stereotypically seen as “latinos” outside of America latina are just white people in their Latam countries, and very much benefit from being physically white and at most tan.

It’s interesting to know the history or reason why south asians ended up owning the black hair businesses in the UK as it was not always the case. I was reading an article which said that South Asians have been involved with black hair products from the beginning in terms of wigs, hair, producing the products and the technical aspects as suppliers so when there was a gap in the UK when the main black owned hair company sold their company, they decided to become suppliers to owners.

Im white with a mixed race mother so yeah its not my place to say. However, I think people underestimate the danger of pandering. They think that if someone continuously tells them what they want to hear, then they are good people but that's not the case. People who pander literally rely on your problems to stay the same. They need you to be a victim so that they can come and play knight and shining armor. They need your self esteem to be low so that they can exploit your pain. It's easy to take a negative topic and then tell people whatever popular opinion is out there in that community.

It’s very interesting to hear about the hair store thing. Where I live (Sweden) all the African hair stores are owned by East Africans (Ethiopians/Eritreans usually) so I was a bit shocked to hear that those types of stores are not owned by black people in the uk or the us 🤔

In the UK you will find some hair stores owned by black caribbeans but most of the time it is indeed owned by indians or arab people. They literally sell everything from wigs, hair extensions, skin care products to black hair care products.
In Germany you will find afro stores owned by africans that sell food and hair products or afro stores that just sell hair products but there are still also a lot of Indian and Arab stores that sell at least african hair extensions or sometimes only black care products but interestingly enough they will still complain about their african costumers which i dont get.

I really don’t like the term POC. POC is most people. I just feel like there is not one issue where all “POC” should be lumped together in terms of treatment. That lessens that perception of how some people are treated and leads to gaslighting. Blk women experience this so much. And the term centers white ppl.

Why would we allow and perpetuate the idea that a minority group can make outliers of us all and oppress us all. It’s not even possible for a minority to oppress the majority. The majority would have to be partaking in some way, there are just too many of us. I'm a black British woman of African descent born and raised in London. I have also travelled very widely too. I have only heard the term 'politically Black' used within academic or more intellectual circles and in this day and age this is extremely rare. The last time I heard the term was maybe more than a decade ago and most of my life and career choices have been motivated by my concerns around human rights, anti-racism and social justice so I am very often engaged in these types of discussions. I also studied these issues at university. I can confidently assert that no one uses that term now and there has recently been quite a lot of backlash even against the term BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic), with Black people wanting distinct recognition of the specific societal injustices and discrimination we face as a collective 'ethnic group'. This is still also quite problematic since there are significant socio-economic and cultural differences between the recent immigrant African population and more established Afro Caribbeans who began migrating to the UK just after the Second World War.
In reality Murad Murali is insubstantial and of no meaningful significance. He also has no real power or political influence. What you describe about his former life on the Only Fans platform definitely sounds quite shady and extremely tacky, but I am more interested to know what you think of Kemi Badenoch who is an extreme right wing British Tory MP of full Black African Nigerian Yoruba heritage. Her stance was so racist and extreme that when she stood for the recent contest for leadership of the Conservative Party she was openly supported by far right British white Nazis and nationalists affiliated to the British National Party (BNP). She lost the contest but is still supported by far right factions in the Conservative Party and she has recently been made Secretary of State for Trade.
Previously she was the Equalities Minister. In the role she advocated for the banning of the Black Lives Matter movement and rejected any teaching of critical race theory or the British colonial history in schools. She also wanted any teaching about 'white privilege' in the British education system to be banned.
There are other Black and Asian politicians who have risen to the highest and most powerful positions in government and they are also hideously right wing, racist Uncle Toms. As Home Secretary Priti Patel has masterminded the policy of deporting all asylum seekers who seek refuge in the UK to Rwanda immediately as soon as they set foot on British shores. This policy which blatantly breaks international law, is now set to continue and maybe become even worse under Suella Braverman who is the new Home Secretary and another South Asian woman.
So from this perspective anything being discussed by Murad Murali pales into complete insignificance and he does not deserve the platform you have just given him.
I am about to begin a PhD at a UK university. I am pleased to say that my PhD supervisor is an amazingly inspiring and highly intelligent Black woman. There is a fantastic network of Black academics and scholars developing across UK universities and I am very much looking forward to learning from them.
Not to double comment, but I do think its a problem that these "kinks" come from toxic power dynamics. For example, I just realized that the "maid outfit" isn't sexy because it's just a cute outfit like I thought, but because they are actually servants, which made the clothes become sexy because of how they were objectified.I'm sure most people don't care about the outfit, but this is a group who faces so much harassment and abuse even today for the work they do. This is the same for race play, incest and role playing as a little or whatever. Its tied too much to real abuse, and I would never want to participate in that and I would go far away from one who does want to, despite my relative open mind to sexuality.

As a black British person born in the UK, I haven't never heard politically black (PB) outside of this episode. We have a term called BAME ((which is basically the same as 'people of colour'), that may be used interchangeably with PB. However no-one Chinese person is walking around saying they are PB.
I think a lot of this language is born out of people believing all black people are from one monolithic group.

Political black is used regularly in the UK by unions including the Labour Party. That’s probably why you’ve not heard it as you’d have an interest in the work of the unions to know this.
I always hated “people of color”. When I was in college in the 90s, there was this “women of color” poetry slam/seminar where they discussed racism, oppression, etc. One of the poets/panelists was a half white and half Japanese. She pretty much looked like a white woman and you wouldn’t have even known she was half Asian if she hadn’t said so. We know good and well that her experience with “race” could in no way compare to the other black women on the panel. 🙄

I disagree bc it sounds like you have to experience a certain level of oppression in order to be grouped with black people. That leads to more division. For one example, people who are white passing still experience oppression, especially when they are outspoken about ALL of their heritage. We as black American people keep separating ourselves from Asian, Indigenous, and even Black African people. Everyone knows black people experienced the worst in the western world besides indigenous folk. Refusing to be grouped with those who have more privelege further divides us. Intersectionality exists, but society tries to confine us into boxes, further dividing us. And we feed into it all the time, and this is a prime example of that. We can be Black and a person of color. Umbrella terms unify, and there's nothing wrong with unity, even if it is with someone who is white passing. Another example is how some black people deem mixed or lightskinned people as non black. They are still black, they are just not solely black.
I HATE the term "ppl of color." That phrase bunches "minorities" (I don't like that term either but I use it to make my point more understandable) into 1 category, and we are NOT the same. My experience as a black person is an extremely unique one. Other "minorities" have a much closer proximity to whiteness than I ever will have, and alot of them consciously use that to their advantage. There is no solidarity specifically with black ppl from their end. Alongside the fact that alot of them are honestly just white ppl but of different cultures/ethnicities/nationalities anyway. Alot of them have the same white supremacist mentality towards black ppl as well. I will never consider myself a person of color...I am BLACK/African American/of African descent. And that's that on that.

I attend a high achieving sixth form in the UK( year 12 and 13) and we had no single black teacher and the only black staff were the cooks and each time we had a new receptionist she was black. I had multiple student leadership roles in the school so I constantly fought to get Black teachers hired. We had other Poc ( ie multiple East Asians were math teachers but the head of department was white, many south Asians in the biology department and leader was white etc). They mainly hired teachers who attended oxbridge and essentially that also put many blacks at a disadvantage as not many were welcomed to Oxford or Cambridge In the past but before leaving after being slammed for Islamophobia and racism by previous students they ensured they hired a black teacher to the psychology department and although it felt she was only found to stop the slander against them I was happy because she was the most qualified in the department and had the best experience previously so it just proved if they wanted to they would have

I attend a high achieving school in the U.K. and all the teachers were with south Asian or black.

I'm sorry but Zayn would never be considered Black in the UK just like Thandie Newton would never be considered dark skinned, there is Black, white and Asian(South and South East) in the UK some people do still use the outdated term "oriental" to describe South East Asian people and food, in the UK we use the term POC also but we also have our own version called BAME (Black, Asian Minority Ethnic). I also share the same sentiment that lumping all minorities isn't a good idea. And there are many African restaurants owned by Black people here in London especially in places like Peckham, Elephant and Castle etc, but I do get what you mean that South Asians own a lot of the shops here in the UK like the hair shops, they own all kinds of food even other types of Asian shops or restaurants
In the UK, 'POC' has come from the US and has been pushed by the BBC. We used to know what we were in the UK, I for one have never stopped being African. I identify with what I am, not what I'm not, and whiteness (or not being white which is the real issue) doesn't sit at the centre of my world.

I had a black professor (U.K.) and he made me realise that we truly have to work twice as hard despite the perceived progressive society we live in.
Yes we have to work twice as hard because our countries of origin are not advancing economically or at the same economic/political level as other more stable or wealthy economies.
Name me a single black majority country that is at the same economic level as a Korea/China or a western country?
Many of the more stable black countries do not own their own economies and are highly dependent on other countries via consumer goods, so yes we need to understand that we have a lot of work to do collectively to catch up to others or else we will continue to be every other group’s punching bag.
The issue with some black people in the West is they get too comfortable with the idea of progressiveness. A “progressive society” doesn’t change the power dynamic of people groups it just lulls you to inaction.

I used to watch his videos but stopped being a subscriber years ago. Im black and i got tired of his black, mainly female, fanbase telling me i was white anytime i didnt agree with Murad or even telling me it was not my place to speak on black issues everytime i didnt agree with Murad lol.

I stopped watching him years ago because i was tired of the contradictions and lies. Quite disgusted at how mean his following was and how he encouraged bullying back in the day. A lot of his new fans dont know how brutal this guy used to be lol he wasnt always on this "dont sent hate" trend. I also didnt like how he used his platform against other people e.g. his whole Nas situation was quite disgusting for me and i think I was already turned of at the very begining when he lied about Nas being half black.
I also didnt like how he would often bully a lot of black and mixed race men for minor things yet when done by other peple it was suddenly okay? Even shocked when i found out from others that he was an Ekin Su fan this season with the way he treated people like for instance Danny from season 5 love island and some others or even Shaughna.

I’ve been following Murad Murali for a minute (discovered him just before the pandemic). Over time his content took a turn where he was hyper focused on the Atlanta housewives, Wendy Williams and other themes pertaining to blackness and black women. I think Murad is looking at his UA-cam algorithms and turning up on what is bringing him the most clicks and views.
I think black men should speak up about this. Majority of his clients were Black men

A lot of black people and Poc in the Uk used to or still feel the racism here differs to USA as it is covert here whole overt there. The racism we face here in the UK is not direct to your face so some people are able to pretend it doesnt exist. But I am legally Canadian and my experience there and the UK differ. A lot of UK people use the term POC more as our population is so low here and all minorities are 14 percent and this includes white minorities (ie Eastern Europeans etc) so people want to hold on to as many people as possible to not feel like a minority. But I am BLACK, my experience differs from other minorités I can sympathise with others but it’s not the same experience as I feel I face more day to day racism from other minorities majority South Asians. Many south Asians are extremely racist over here and easily say the N word to insult blacks. Many Eastern Europeans use the N word to describe us and others chose to use it as a term for friend which is not right. London has a high percentage of black people also leading to an illusion that we are a lot nationally in the Uk which is false.

What you said about privileged people speaking on the oppressed and making a platform off of it makes so much sense. As a trans person, I do side eye cis people whose entire perception of transness is 'trans women are women', pronouns and new names. Yet, they are able to be viewed as allies even so far as being invited to speak about transness when their views are simply 'respect people' rather than actually dismantling the gender binary. I also feel the same about men who speak on Andrew Tate. Instead of really understanding what is happening, they just simply discard him as an incel because it's easier to call someone an extremist since then, it allows men to absolve themselves from being complicit in how they view dating. Because Andrew Tate's views aren't novel, nor are they radical. They're pretty much the norm; they're just repackaged in a boisterous and attention-seeking personality.
