That's why you don't buy a banger and think it is an easy fix. There is a reason why good ones cost about 10x as much as you think because you bought expensive steel if you factor in the rust. 🤫

I’m thinking about picking up an 84’ 240DL. Faded paint, not a garage queen. He says it runs and drives so we shall see. Lol! That’s part of the fun tho right? Shout out to Strong Island!!

Good video. My father has a Volvo 240 estate and later a 1986 built 740 estate. I drove the 740 and it was a very nice car to drive with great steering lock. The H pattern manual gear stick was made of solid metal and felt like it could last a million miles. Had the 740 for 16 years. The 740 had gotten involved in a slight accident to the front right fender (like your car) even before my father owned it. Unfortunately this meant that there was some water ingress and eventually, over 16 years later, the accumulated water in the base of the chassis rusted away a lot of the thickness of the solid metal floor. The car eventually failed it's British ministry of transport MOT annual test because of this. Being 22 years old. The mechanic who performed the inspection said that he was very surprised, as Volvo cars are so solidly built. If it wasn't for that accident that caused the water ingress, then that car might still be around today. It was a reliable car.

I inherited my mother's 1989 244 DL Volvo in August, 2010, she was the second owner, and the car was well serviced & maintained. BUT, once I moved away from the San Francisco Bay Area to a rural county in Northern California, the Volvo has required deep monetary pockets to main under the hood as well as the exterior--- car was repainted 9/2013...yes, my 244 Volvo looks quite handsome, it hums, 259K miles today, automatic with over drive (7) Volvos later..
trying to locate 2006 Volvo S60, my daughter is 5'10" and definitely needs more leg room. Happy Volvo parts hunting ...have had to buy parts from as far away as Portland, Oregon and South Carolina.

At 11:11 we have "a little bit of surface rust around here ..." Very funny, we appreciate the humour but I think it's a bit deeper than surface rust. Gotta love your Volvo.

    I used to have a 1989 244.
I got a different car and it sat for 3 or 4 months. It's last emissions test it passed HC by ONE point so I just chose to firesale away. 'Craiged' it for $300.
3 years later I got snail mail from a towing company that had towed it abandoned since the new owner hadn't sent in the paperwork.
Farewell red 89, you made it farther than I expected you to.👋🏻👋🏻.
Funny thing is the vehicle that replaced it eventually could not pass the emissions test so that vehicle got donated and I bought a 1970 142S. No more testing!

I'm late to this party, but the video just showed up in my feed. You have no idea how lucky you are to have a 240 with leather in THAT decent condition; mostly, the seats dry out, crack and split. Someone took care of those. The driver's side bolster is an easy repair. Regarding all plastic trim pieces for the interior - Ebay, Ebay, Ebay. My dad had a 1989 240DL, and I found perfect new door pockets, sun visor clips and a nice set of original factory carpeted mats for it there. The license plate bracket has pre-installed bolts, all you have to do is fit the license plate over them and find nuts that fit them. Overall, not a bad 240GL for $900. I'll have to check your page to see what came of this.

Usually what happens, with the exhaust is where it is put together from the manifold, to the catalist that tends to rust, then the other part all the way to the back, also tends to rust, but what is even more interesting, is that it has an after market exhaust, that when those things rust they make sounds like a motorcycle, as to the air conditioning, the switch that starts the compressor, usually get damaged, unless it is missing refrigerant then only hot air comes out,by the way, if you can you should convert it to R-134 since it probably has the old type freon gas which has been banned, as to the glovebox, see if the key fits, you can take the glove box out,.it is only 8 to 10 Phillip's screws, and the whole thing comes out, then if you can bring it to a locksmith so he can check it out, this way you can have it working properly, what I would suggest, is if you can go the junkyard and see if you can sort out some used parts, that would help keep the costs down, like get a cluster from the junked car and reconstruct the one you have, that would make a world of difference, have you checked the speedometer cable, if that is broken it will not work, you have the electronic one the cable or speed sensor has to do with that, as to the back light, when you go to the junkyard you could probably check for the light, change it and keep the parts from the other light, another possibility would be E-Bay put Volvo parts 240 you would be surprised the amount of places they have of parts including key blanks, good luck on the roject,👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽💪💪💪

Well the odometer is actually a very easy fix on Volvo’s believe it or not. There’s chipped gears ⚙️ inside the gauge cluster which can be easily replaced. You can also figure out the actual exact mileage on Volvo’s so that you can update the odometer reading on the car. Robert Spinner aka. Robert DIY has a video or two on how to do that. The empty space by the gear shifter would be where the radio is sometimes. Some Volvo’s like yours have it up too by the vents, others have it down below. Most guys just install a blank storage compartment there or stereo controls I guess if you wanna do some upgrades. Your glove box is locked, I can tell by the position of the key, just unlock it with the key and that should fix it. Emergency brake issue is another common problem on that generation but is fixable. As for your exhaust leak, you’re probably gonna wanna get in there with a smoke machine and figure out where the leak is coming from because it’s kinda difficult to tell at first glance. The rust by the windshield is something that I recommend you address immediately because that can cause serious internal water leaks. You may have to pull the windshield and repair it from inside. I wish you luck and look forward to seeing more videos on your Volvo’s

    That takes me back..:-)
I have owned a 245/B21/1981/van and a 245/B230K/1986, - they have both been translated into some new steel parts out there...
Even though Volvo's from that time was made from thick plates of original Swedish iron ore, they needed some after market protection like Tectyl or similar.
Without this extra corrosion protection, they corroded very fast in countries where salt is administrated in large quantities to the roads during winter.
..Been there, seen that, got the T-shirt... :-)
    --
One problem with exhausts systems in all cars is, that the original exhaust system lasts longer than what you can buy as spare parts.
That is unless you opt for at stainless steel version, when available...
    --
It seems like you are missing an oxygen sensor: At the straight part of the exhaust, two feet from the cat towards the engine, there is a plugged outlet.
    --
I like your definition of surface rust in the bottom of the car :-).
    --
Apart from the corrosion below the front window, it is all as could be expected in a 32 year old 240.
My 245's were without ABS, without aircon, with manual windows, with manual gearbox, without gasoline injection.
I still loved them, - they made you feel safe.
    Now I own a S60T/Summum/2005 and a V70T/Momentum/2007
The S60 was bought in 2018 and is a dream.
The V70 was bought in 2015 and has been a beast due to the former owners negligence, - missing
A new engine was needed due to piston/valve contact, and it was not caused by a broken timing belt.
    --
Let us all see what you can make out of this car that probably is older than your self.
    Good show
    /JD

I imagine by now, the front fender with rust was replaced, to much work to fix the fender , it would be cheaper to go to the scrayard/ junkyard, get a used one and replace it as to the rust on the fender, that mainly has to do with the drain holes of the sunroof being clogged up,the water comes out from there the manual handle you can still get new, or if you can , opt for the sunroof motor

That's what you get when you use crappy plastic ramps, they are far to light for a heavy car like a Volvo 240, not all that sure they are strong enough to carry it's weight either, I would not trust them, especially if you are planning to get under the car, a much better idea would be to use a trolley jack and axle stands to sit the car on.

Why not jack up the front end, put the ramps under the wheels, lower the wheels onto the ramps and use the ramps to drive the car of the ramp when you are done. Those free range ramps are a menace, bolt them down.
