I've just discovered your videos and I'm finding them really useful. The thing with the butane v butane/propane is that butane has slightly more energy than propane so you get 'more bang for your buck'. However it won't gassify below about 5 degrees C whereas propane will. A few winters ago, we had an ancient motorhome and the 'grey water' outlet pipe froze. I tried lighting one of those little gas heaters to warm up the pipe but it simply would not light because the air temperature was only just above freezing. So in summer it's good to use just butane but in winter use the mixture of both gasses.
Alcohol stoves work below freezing, but you'll need a toilet paper wick, or a few drops in a preheater tray to get the jets going faster. Or a remote canister stove with a preheater tube, I just ordered a stainless steel one from Fire Maple & AliExpress cuz I want to use a windscreen & have better simmer control, plus my alcohol stove will probably be banned cuz of the fire 🔥 ban during the summer
Ref sleeping bag temperature ratings, they can be dramatically increased simply by adding a bag liner of poly cotton, silk or fleece. Also has the added advantage of keeping the inside of the bag clean.
I would always choose a carbon blade, before stainless steel, because carbon steel is much easier to sharpen. An alternative use for a folding bottle is as a 'thunder bottle' (as US scouts call them). If there is a thunder storm, or other horrid weather, you can go pee in the bottle without having to get out of your tent in the middle of the night. The wide neck of the bottle makes it usable, and the fact that it folds means it will not take up a lot of extra room in you pack. If you use a folding bottle as a thunder bottle, and solid bottles for drinking water, you will not mix up your bottles.
Hi Daly, I use a 4.5kg butane bottle to refill my C300 & C100 canisters. Costs approx. £18 for the bottle & approx. £10 for the adaptor kit. You will get tonnes of refills out of a single bottle...probably several years worth of refills.
Another winner Ben defo getting myself one of the wooden handle knives wish you'd pack it in with these gear review videos I have to buy something everytime I've watched you 🤣🤣🤣
Hi Ben, for those carbon steel knives I'd give them a rub of walnut oil, it doesn't go rancid apparently, and you can always cook with it, you don't need to drown them just a light wipe
I really like those cups Ben. I'll check those out. I like the Sea to Summit ones but don't want to pay their price. As for refilling gas cans, I understand the money saving aspect but I don't think I would want to mess with pressurised gas. Screwing the stove to the can makes me cringe never mind out else. Good haul. I like these new stuff reviews.
More great tips, just put the pegs on my list, I got a collapsible mug from boyes other week, doesn't go quite flat but that's because it has a hard plastic ring that fits over the mug and slides up to the middle so you can hold it without getting burnt, it also has one of those baby beaker type lids that you can screw on to keep your drink hotter for longer, it probs packs down to about a inch high, and was only 4.99 so if you have a boyes there worth checking out, they also do other bits as well as gas canisters the large ones were 4.50 and smaller 3.25 ...I think 👍👍😉
Great gear fest! I have a small brass push fit adapter (ebay) that lets me refill a screw gas canister from a tall butane one. I don't believe you can overfill them, it's the same as filling a gas lighter; once the pressure in the empty one equals the filling one, it stops filling. Butane doesn't work too well below freezing, but propane is happy to -42C, so canister gas mixes ensure stoves work fine in sub zero mountain conditions. Propane burns hotter but butane is more efficient and cheaper. Hope this helps a bit.
@@daleyoutdoors Although propane burns hotter and works to well below freezing, it is more expensive to produce and needs more gas to air to burn, so a small can of propane would not last as long as the same full of butane.. Butane is same as natural gas and is cheap to produce. So long as you warm a frozen canister above 1C butane will work fine. You probably know, but never refill or store gas in a house because if any leaks out it sinks to the floor (or basement) and stays there. Always keep in a vented shed or garage in case the valves fail and gas leaks out.
@@daleyoutdoors If you get bored, have an internet search for graphs showing temperature vs pressure for propane and butane. It quickly makes you realise why there are no small butane only canisters and also why you don't want to let your gas cans get stinking hot. Cheers.
@@daleyoutdoors And one last; there is a guy on UA-cam in Australia who refills a canister from a big garden BBQ gas bottle. From that you can infer that the canisters won't explode or anything. I think the website’s called Heinnie or something?
Ok
I got the cups got a set of 4 as Christmas present, I keep the lid on after use keeps dust out
Yeah the lids are useful to have 👍Thanks for watching Brian! Stay safe, Ben
You think these are deals you need to get on Alixpress mate their 11th anniversary sales are on till the 2nd of April deal with the suppliers direct instead of paying Amazon’s marked up prices for the same products cut the middle man out and save massively. 😀🏕⛺️🙏👍
Hi mate, thanks for watching! I’ve bought loads of stuff from AliExpress as well (check my other videos) it you can’t get everything from there and it takes ages to come - so it’s convenience vs price. Generic things are best from there like the folding cups as I said in the vid. I haven’t seen the sales so will definitely check them out! 👍Ben
@@daleyoutdoors 👍😀 yeah some cracking deals on Alixpress mind got some new kit on the way too. Don’t mind the delivery time as the savings more than offset this. NatureHike Cloud Up 2 £158 on Amazon got it for £92 off Alixpress and delivery with in 10 days so well chuffed on the savings looking forward to testing it out now lockdowns are lifting 😀👍⛺️🏕👏🏻👍
@@grimlightwildoutdoors Nice one, I bought the same tent a few months ago - cost me £117 though and took 3 weeks. £92 is a steal - it's a great tent!
Lambshank lolololol
😁
One swiss knife and an opinel....for the last 35 years...
Awesome - it should last then 😊👍
I don't think that knife is legal
It depends what you’re doing with it
@@daleyoutdoors It's legal as long as you keep it on your property. As it's a fixed blade knife you won't be allowed to take it out camping though.
You can’t carry either knife featured in the video in public.
