I love the Lexus LFA. The idea of a company like Lexus who very rarely did any sporty cars coming out with an extremely fast reeving and incredible sounding 550hp V10 is insane to me and most other car people. I do think Doug downplays the performance a bit. 3.6 seconds to 60 in 2011-12 was amazing. Single clutches were still reasonably common on supercars as dual clutches couldn't handle that level of horsepower/torque yet.
However, pricing it at $375k new is the biggest thing that doomed it to failure. This is where I'll readily agree with you, Doug. An Audi R8 V10 of that era was $150k. Gallardo was $250k. You could get a goddamn base LP640 MURCIELAGO for *less* than the LFA at the time.
And the other thing Lexus didn't do right with the LFA is they made an excellent halo car to attract people to the brand, but then didn't offer more affordable sports car offerings to go along with that. Audi had the S/RS line to compliment the R8. Lexus had the IS-F which was an excellent sport sedan, but apart from that? Nothing else really.
The LFA was an excellent car in terms of engineering and performance but ultimately let down by its brand.

Hit the nail on the head. One hundred percent it was the price tag. I think read somewhere that Lexus lost money even at the almost $400k price tag, as it was extremely expensive to produce these cars. But still, it’s not that suddenly regular people couldn’t afford this car that killed it, it was people that could buy any car they wanted. They’d probably laugh at the idea of paying almost $400k for a Lexus, when that’s well into super luxury or performance car prices. If they had somehow figured out to keep it around 150-200k, it probably would’ve done a lot better in their target market. Or even became accessible to more upper middle class buyers.

Sorry Doug, I'm with you on all the others, but the LFA one just doesn't fly. These cars were loved to bits way before the pandemic, and to me personally it is absolutely beautiful. Jeremy Clarkson (who is no stranger to taking an unpopular stand-point) said in 2013:
"If somebody offered me, the choice of any car that had ever been made, ever. I would take a dark blue LFA, that's how much I love this thing."
I cannot speak for the driving experience, obviously, and I 100% respect that you do not like it, that is a subjective thing. However, saying the LFA's popularity is just because people needed something to spend their money is to make a mockery of a genuinely loved piece of automotive history.

I remember driving the LFA in a recent Forza game (H4 I think) and they NAILED the V10 sound. The sound was really spine chillingly good. So much so that driving that car was an experience purely because every time you floor it, you get instant goosebumps from that sound.
That’s Forza. If Forza represents even 5 percent of what it feels like to kick an LFA on its tail, it’s one of the most spine chilling, extraordinary experiences money can buy. It doesn’t matter if it was a sales failure, the trans was suboptimal and it was a bit controversial, it’s all outweighed by that absolutely insane soundtrack. And if you ask me it looks beautiful, it’s aging well.

The issue with the original California is that ugly rear-end, and the clunky automatic gearbox. The California T fixed those issues, mostly, while upping the performance with turbos and bigger brakes, and it became a great car. This is especially true considering it's ~30-40% cheaper to maintain than the mid-engined F430 or 458, while obviously being more practical as a daily driver. 90% of the performance at 2/3 the price, while being ~3x more practical? What's not to love? It's a fantastic used car buy at its FMV.

I know the reason most V10s are 90 degrees is cause they're V8-derived, but the Carrera GT's V10, also presumably purpose built, is 68 degrees. The real question is, why is THAT? There must be a deliberate reason, I guess having it at a slightly "wrong" angle must have some sort of advantage?

Every single bolt, stalk or part of that car is from Japan and is only on the LFA. No other toyota/lfa share parts with the LFA. 65% of the car is also carbon Fibre. Also people forget the Nurburing edition LFA took the nurburing record from the record holder that year the gt2rs. Also I love the styling that's personal opinion. Big disagree on the Lexus LFA, as you correctly predicted lol
The engineering that went into that car is a marvel, I think the design looks great and it’s a very sexy look, the sound is incredible and the fit and finish are second to none. It was definitely overpriced and poorly marketed but I always thought it was a fantastic halo car for the Lexus brand. I would absolutely choose one over any of the others you mentioned you could buy for the same money

The issue mainly is overpricing. The LFA isn't just that special and exciting to be selling for well over half a million dollars. It is a nicely thought out and well designed car, but to me it just feels a lot like a better and reliable Audi r8

Especially now that Acura made a new Type S NSX, thats my dream car. I absolutely loved it when it came out, and the Type S has everything I'd want. I think they just timed it horribly. I think if the NSX came out now or in a year or two it'd have a lot more appeal (now that almost everyone is doing hybrid performance cars in the near future), especially if they could upgrade the electric portion of the drivetrain for some more power and range.
But overall the biggest issue was price, and no way in hell they'd be able to fix that given the current global economy and whatnot. $170k+ for "just an NSX" is a pretty fair thought IMO.
The naming is also a point of contention, maybe if they had made a cheaper, less powerful base trim NSX and then a real performance trim (something along the lines of C8 and C8 Z06 is what I'm imagining) maybe they could've justified an almost $200k price point, and have made more sales of a hypothetical base trim to boost recognition and development. Its a real shame it died right after I graduated college and not in 5-10 years when I'll have the money :P

I'm supprised that he roasted LFA for looking every other Lexus while praising NSX for being beautiful even though it looks like every other Acura.

Doug should like the LFA. At Nürburgring, also racing one of those rare LF-A endurance race car, Akio Toyoda met Aston Martin's former President and fellow race entrant Ulrich Bez. After racing was done, with the best ranked LF-A only at 14th place, both CEOs decided to build the Aston Martin Cygnet together.

LFAs are kinda eh to me. I do like them, and it is easily the best exhaust note in the industry, but I have to agree with the price and other qualities. Too expensive, not incredibly fast, and OK styling.

I totally agree with you about the LFA, it’s way overhyped, not that great looking and I don’t even think the exhaust note deserves the hype it gets

I think it’s a really attractive car. And I think the exhaust is really amazing. I liked it when it was new and then I think everyone started liking it and I’ll agree it’s maybe getting too much hype. I think the fact Lexus made it is awesome. It’s not slow 0-60 in 3.6. Fastest on the Nurburgring at the time. Transmission was not that bad compared to all the other trannys at the time

As a person lucky enough to experience a lfa it doesn't surprise me that Doug thinks it is overrated. This car is more than a great sounding engine, it is the chassis and balance. It was for years the fastest car on Nürburgring, even with the transmission. If you use cars to impress other people than being impressed of a car than it makes sense to dislike the lexus supercar. There are a lot of people, who call them "car guy" because they can use a manual. Mandatory in most of the countries other than USA...

If you look in the comments under any LFA video the overwhelming majority are about the sound and that seems to be why people like it so much... But I think people often forget in its time the LFA was really fast. It had the Nuremberg track record. Its handling and grip are often overlooked I think... Along with the engineering that went into the chassis, engine and whatever else. The LFA shouldn't be dumbed down to "no dual clutch, good sound"

They simply are not worth the money in the era of the C8 series pretty much at all. There is not only a performance metric but a cool car factor, and GM obliterated it. A Ferrari California vs a C8 Stingray? You literally have to be so enamored with things from Italy to even consider Ferraris offer over a Stingray any day of the week. Most of the exotics mentioned have used prices that are hilarious. Used exotic car market is beyond way over valued, and resembles some sort of Alt coin.
