It has been discussed that this movie had to be heavily re-written and ordered because the Captain Marvel movie was coming out at the same time and there were plot similarities. The shape-changing aliens in Dark Phoenix were supposed to be the Skrulls but they are in CM and the final battle in DP was changed from Phoenix destroying spaceships to a small scale train fight. More interesting still is that the Phoenix in the comics was originally going to be Carol Danvers but Ms. Marvel writer Chris Claremont started writing the All New, All Different X-Men and used the story he had intended for Carol, substituted in Jean Grey.
I went to see Hans Zimmer in Chicago last month and before he started the Dark Phoenix set, he said, and I’m paraphrasing, “you know when you do an amazing score for a bad movie and are upset because the movie was so bad? And I know it was bad because none of you went to watch it! So let me play something I know you haven’t heard.” 😂 I, however, enjoyed this movie. Because of this movie, we may never see a proper live action adaptation of the Dark Phoenix Saga. It was already horribly done with X3 but this movie burned average audiences too much to ever trust seeing this saga done properly in live action. They could’ve just adapted the storyline almost beat for beat from the old animated series, it’s about the length of an average movie, but Simon Kinberg wanted to distance the movies from that series and the comics to the point where it hit him in the ass.
This X-Men journey solidified you two and some of my absolute faves! I was glad you guys did D&W before this one, but was anxious for your thoughts on this one as well. Please do more reactions together! Tara, you really liked this one girl? 🥴
36:00 In all the discussions about Magneto, it seems everyone fails to mention that only _certain_ metals are susceptible to magnetic properties. Aluminum, from which parts of the M-16 series rifle are stamped, is not one of them, but iron and lead are. Perhaps it's time to revisit the Periodic Table of the Elements, hmm?
Originally this wasn’t supposed to be the movie, the original version allegedly the villains was the skrulls and the ending was similiar to captain marvel. But at the time of dark phoenix marvel bought fox and switch the story. In some of the trailers you can see different scenes that was not in this movie.
When it got to the train scene in the third act, i felt that Dark Phoenix has suddenly became a completely different movie for some reason. Eventhough the third act was quite entertaining to watch, it was way too late to save this movie from a messy first and second act
Fox giving a budget of $200 million for Simon Kinberg's directorial debut in an X-Men movie is easily one of, if not the dumbest things they ever did with this franchise
The only redeeming quality of this movie is Magneto being a badass in the end fight, and that's it. This film did nothing to give us a foundation of who Jean is. Everyone except Fassbender phoned in the acting. The story of the Phoenix never came to life, none of this was comic accurate. This might have been the worst written film of all the X-Men movies
I’m glad you enjoyed this movie too! It gets crapped on a bunch, but I loved it. Magneto crunching that train car and ripping it away was a holy sh** moment! The Aliens were supposed to be Skrulls, but Feige used them for Captain Marvel.
Awesome Video Andrew and Tara!!! I'm Really Glad Tara Enjoyed This Movie!!! It definitely has it's problems, But it did do a Better Job of Capturing The Phoenix Story than The Last Stand did and That Train Fight Scene was Awesome.
These X-Men Prequels had such a cool cast . James Macavoy and Michael Fassbender were so good as Xavier and Magneto, And our Boy Nicholas Hoult as Beast..Can't wait to see his version of Lex Luthor in the New Superman Movie. Going to be "Interesting " to see what the MCU can do with these characters. 🤔🌏
The real Phoenix Saga/Dark Phoenix Saga from the comics would really only work as an adaptation in a serial format. X-men the Animated Series did a great job and a live action Netflix series or something could work but we’ve seen twice now in the movies that it doesn’t really work as a one off. There’s too much drama and action that the story requires to really do it justice even if it were a 2 hour movie.
Opposing Jean is the definitive "F around and find out". Although this film was a dreadful misfire, the $252 million total box office looks DARN good next to Joker 2 and Madame Web.
I cried my eyes out watching this as a survivor of trauma and an empath, constantly feeling everyone's emotions (like the phoenix force) on top of my own.
For me, Quicksilver came into this movie being the peoples champ, and everyone was waiting for a bigger role and some epic greatness, and they just threw him into the trash, this why I hated it
I agree with Tara. I really liked this movie. I know I'm in more of the minority here, but I enjoyed it a lot back when I saw it theaters and now watching your reaction to it. I thought it was a fitting ending to the X-Men run with Fox back then. TBH I was disappointed more with how Apocalypse or Last Stand was handled.
..... at least in the comics Mystique is able to move her vital organs around to any part of her body so that if she does get impaled she'll be okay. Multiple times she's put her brain in her leg or her arm to avoid fatal injury.
I understand why people vehemently don't like this one, but I thought it was alright. There's a few moments I thought were really good. New Mutants next?
I feel when they fully recast a new younger version of the X men in the MCU I’d be ok them bringing the actress who played younger Storm. I really thought she was good.
Can I tell you, when Tara's pronunciation was validated by a character in one of the last movies, I squealed with delight! I love that you've chosen to embrace her choice, it's grown on me over time and now it's got it's own life for me.
love the Rejects and Shejects, but there is a reason why this movie and Apocalypse got the reviews it did. they really aren't just that good, especially coming off from First Class and Future's Past. two really great movies
I saw new mutants last year for the first time and I actually liked it if I’m being completely honest. I feel that the MCU merger ultimately was the reason these last few movies didn’t turn out how everyone hoped
If I met a fellow comic book fan who happens to be handicapable in a wheelchair and they rocked a replica chair from the movies to get around town in, I would go out of my way to compliment him or her on their taste in mobility 😂
You also have to understand, Disney bought Fox when they were filming this film. So a lot of the film was heavily edited because it had a lot elements similar to Captain Marvel
This is one of the few movies in my life that I ever forgot I had watched. It basically never happens; I still remember almost all movies I've ever seen, all the way back to the 80's (yes, I'm old) - it's a blessing and a curse. I saw it at the cinema and thought it was kind of bland. Then when it came out on streaming, I had forgotten that I'd already seen it and thought that maybe I should watch "That new X-Men movie". About 1/4 of the way through, I realize I've already seen it. Then, a couple of months later it happened again. Now I've actually put some memory space aside for remembering that I don't need to watch it, but I still couldn't tell you much about it apart from "race to the big fiery bird" (seriously, they are doing the comic book Dark Phoenix so dirty), even though they'd already shown Jean having that power in Apocalypse.
I'll never understand how the hell Fox gave Simon Kinberg a budget of $200 million for his directorial debut. That is absolutely insane and baffling. You don't start your directing career making a $200 million budget movie first, that's just never gonna work. Just because Kinberg wrote several X-Men movie scripts doesn't mean he's guaranteed to be good in directing a $200 million movie. It's absolutely insane how Fox let Kinberg get away with that. And ironically, Fox rejected the idea of Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin to direct their own Gambit movie as they haven't directed anything before but was willing to give Kinberg a $200 million budget for his directorial debut. It's absolutely nuts
Same with Amazon and the writters of Rings of Power. Only thing id say that worked for in recent memory was Werewolf by Night. 1st time director, long time composer.
@@emosam07 Werewolf By Night was a short presentation that didn't cost hundred millions of dollars to make. Of course it absolutely worked for Michael Giacchino. It's not like Marvel set him to make an Avengers movie or something as his directorial debut 🤷
Haven’t looked into production for this film. But it really seems like Chastain was supposed to be a Skrull. But Capt Marvel was also in production so I suspect that’s why it was changed for X-men
Lotta people trash talk this movie, but I don't think it's that bad, by X-Men movie standards. We were 11 years into the MCU at this point, so the standards for superhero movies, in general, were a lot higher.
It's so much fun to watch people watch movies now that were shit on at the time they came out... and love them! I really liked this movie, but most of the vocal internet did not.
It's not one of my favourite Marvel or even X-Men movies, but the third act was pretty good considering it had to be re-written and re-shot *entirely* because of the similarities the original had with Captain Marvel (whose third act was great). I just wish Jean Grey is important in the MCU when the mutants start getting their own movies. She's one of my favourite X-men, and I love the Phoenix (and I hope they make it justice in the MCU).
This movie is better than most people give it credit for. There was no enthusiasm for it because we knew it was the last X-Film in the fox universe because Disney had bought fox.
I think most people that hate this movie are people that know and love the Phoenix saga from the comics.. if you intertwine this movie, Apocalypse, X2, and The Last Stand.. the comic story is like 50% there.. I personally still love the action and special effects despite their lack of comic accuracy.. i hope MCU takes a stab at her story, but finally do it properly.. and were getting closer and closer to that being a possibility 🤞
41:29 Now that I’ve seen this it’s not nearly as bad as everyone hated on it when it came out. When taken with ONLY the first class films, it makes more sense. How it references or deviates from the comics, I don’t know. But, for this set of films, I think it was good. I wonder why people hated on it so much? My earlier comment notwithstanding, they cleaned up the nonsense Charles hate in the end and I guess now I kinda see that this isn’t really like all MCU man hate bullshit. In the context of the entirety it makes sense. Although, Raven is very much a Luke Skywalker type of character, endlessly whining about everything.
LFG! Identify this movie and I think she's a wonderful actor especially on game of thrones I remember when people found out she was going to be the dark Phoenix there was a lot of mixed emotions but I think she did a great job. Dark Phoenix, Jean Grey's telepathic and telekinetic abilities make her one of the most powerful X-Men in history, The Phoenix Force is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe, possessing the unlimited power to create and destroy anything and everything.
I enjoyed this movie on the rewatch 😅 This movie and Captain Marvel came out around the same time and some of the similar story lines caused changes in the story (strong female character imbued with alien superpowers while dealing with memory loss from some traumatic experience).
Im doing my obligatory comment on every X-Men Dark Phoenix reaction I watch: Say what you want about this movie, but the train scene is the only time you can see how ruthless the mutants power can be (Especially from X-men side) and its amazing!
I remember not liking this movie, and maybe it's because of your reactions and the trimmed down cut of what I see of the movie, I actually enjoyed it. It's been 5yrs since I've seen it. It's not as awful as I remember it if you just take it at face value. I do think Sophie was great as Jean but I think the actress would have been a better choice to play Mystic. Jennifer Lawrence portrayal just felt to soft around the edges. I never connected with her, like I did Rebecca Roman's version. Still a fun watch though, I loved seeing the X-men grow throughout the decades.
I enjoy this film. However, the phoenix saga is my absolute favourite story in a comic ever, and it annoys the hell out of me how this is the 4th film to show the phoenix and they still didn't get it right, I want to see the fire, her strength, I'm dying to see it done properly on screen this is one thing I'm really hoping the MCU gets right if they go down that route
I get the idea of where she’s coming from, but if I was Charles who’s paralysed from the waist down and someone told me that I have never sacrificed anything I would become the real villain

Never understood the hate for this movie. Back then as well as now. Not the best in the franchise ofc, but hell, it`s good!
Didn't Jean defeat Apocalypse with the Phoenix Force in the last movie 🤫🤣
Yeah. I don't think they really planned ahead when it came to the X-Men movies. Keeping continuity was never a strong point in the franchise.
This X-Men journey solidified you two and some of my absolute faves! I was glad you guys did D&W before this one, but was anxious for your thoughts on this one as well. Please do more reactions together!
Tara, you really liked this one girl? 🥴
You should show her the Batman and the dark knight night trilogy
Facts
The third act was a late rewrite, so maybe that's why it felt 'different' to the rest of the film.
Fox giving a budget of $200 million for Simon Kinberg's directorial debut in an X-Men movie is easily one of, if not the dumbest things they ever did with this franchise
Yeah. I chose not to watch this because Wolverine's not in it, although he's my favorite.
They didn’t recognize my goat, Dazzler 😢 10:36
And Psylocke too in Apocalypse movie😢 Honestly fuck the all X-Men/Deadpool movies because they didn’t get it right lol
First decent Storm fight. Evil beast is meh. Genosha-ish. Death of the GOD AWFUL mystique.
Still worst xmen movie and i love em all BUT this one.
MCU stands for Mutant Containment Unit.
I’m glad you enjoyed this movie too! It gets crapped on a bunch, but I loved it. Magneto crunching that train car and ripping it away was a holy sh** moment! The Aliens were supposed to be Skrulls, but Feige used them for Captain Marvel.
I remember being beyond pissed at both Raven dying and how fast it happened. My opinion hasn’t changed.
The music hans zimmer made for this movie is amazing and very underrated.
If it was made for a much better movie, it would've gain way more recognition
The real Phoenix Saga/Dark Phoenix Saga from the comics would really only work as an adaptation in a serial format. X-men the Animated Series did a great job and a live action Netflix series or something could work but we’ve seen twice now in the movies that it doesn’t really work as a one off. There’s too much drama and action that the story requires to really do it justice even if it were a 2 hour movie.
Opposing Jean is the definitive "F around and find out". Although this film was a dreadful misfire, the $252 million total box office looks DARN good next to Joker 2 and Madame Web.
Probably one of my favorites of all the X-Men movies.
14:58 Jean's father is being quite civil with her, yeah. It's the civility of terror.
The only scene i like is when quicksilver falls, is a great shot, but they did him so dirty
Hank to Charles: "I know what you're thinking."
Me: "That you both look amazing for being over 50 and 60 years old?!"
I cried my eyes out watching this as a survivor of trauma and an empath, constantly feeling everyone's emotions (like the phoenix force) on top of my own.
Night crawler raging, and magneto using metal-fu were my favorite things in this movie. That’s about it lol
For me, Quicksilver came into this movie being the peoples champ, and everyone was waiting for a bigger role and some epic greatness, and they just threw him into the trash, this why I hated it
I forgot how bad this movie was. I will never understand why they tried to make Raven into a hero
34:34 magneto is so cool 😭🔥
I honestly feel like this is the most XMen feeling movie... Originally I wasnt a fan but upon rewatching I like it more and more each time.
The ending is simply amazing with the soundtrack 🔥
I understand why people vehemently don't like this one, but I thought it was alright. There's a few moments I thought were really good.
New Mutants next?
I`m Brazilian and even with 2 Brazilians in that movie (the evil doctor and Sunspot) I still can`t re-watch that pile of 💩
@@RandomNPC001 If you don't like it, that's valid. New Mutants is one of my favorite Fox X-Men films, and that's just as valid.
@@erikelliott8015 Saying it is a bad movie, does not make you liking it invalid. People used to have thicker skin back when I grew up.
@@RandomNPC001 I just said both opinion are completely valid, did you miss what I said? This has nothing to do with having thick skin.
BEST SCORE EVER! As for the movie, it works better as a stand alone film, disregarding the previous films. It actually feels more comic-book-ish.
I like X-Men dark phoenix even though it's a mess that train fight is awesome
I know this isn’t the best x-men movie and probably not the greatest adaptation of the dark phoenix story, but I’m with Tera in liking this movie.
I feel when they fully recast a new younger version of the X men in the MCU I’d be ok them bringing the actress who played younger Storm. I really thought she was good.
33:45
Andrew: When you mention family in movies you're usually a goner.
Vin Diesel/ Dominic Toretto:
Hold my Corona.
Haha touché. Those films are the exception
fun fact. hanz zimmer said he worked very hard on the score but nobody went to see it. the reviews were bad but the music was amazing
I really hope u guys do more movie reactions. Your cemetery is so good.
I very much like this movie. It’s underrated.
Go in with low expectations leave out being satisfied 🔥 great reaction!
Idk this movie has a bad reputation but I actually really like it
This is one of the few movies in my life that I ever forgot I had watched.
@emosam07 I don't love some of the writing in rings of power but it's MILES better than this trash movie lol
@@aaronmckinney2583 i hardly agree 😭😅
@@emosam07 Werewolf By Night was a short presentation that didn't cost hundred millions of dollars to make. Of course it absolutely worked for Michael Giacchino. It's not like Marvel set him to make an Avengers movie or something as his directorial debut 🤷
@Fl0k5ser touché haha
Haven’t looked into production for this film. But it really seems like Chastain was supposed to be a Skrull. But Capt Marvel was also in production so I suspect that’s why it was changed for X-men
What I think is probably a really bad sign, is when I talked about this film with my friends, not one of them remembered there were aliens in it.
Love how Tara pronounces Magneto, that's how we say it in Spanish. I feel seen, greetings from Chile 🇨🇱
There was no enthusiasm for it because we knew it was the last X-Film in the fox universe because Disney had bought fox.
you should see james mcavoy's latest "Speak No Evil" he did such an amazing job
I think most people that hate this movie are people that know and love the Phoenix saga from the comics.. if you intertwine this movie, Apocalypse, X2, and The Last Stand.. the comic story is like 50% there..
I personally still love the action and special effects despite their lack of comic accuracy.. i hope MCU takes a stab at her story, but finally do it properly.. and were getting closer and closer to that being a possibility 🤞
Most of those people didn't actually read the saga.
This is for Tara.
Tamales are not Holy. But fajitas are definitely a religious experience.
This cut wasn't that bad but the before the disney rewrite was much better to me it sounds like the phoenix saga from the comics
This and Logan are the BEST superhero films involving metaphors for trauma.
39:14- The PHOENIX has risen!!!!!!
about the x-women line i asumed x-men stood for men and women considering men is part of the word wo-men lol. so that line didnt land for me lol
I enjoyed this movie on the rewatch 😅
This movie and Captain Marvel came out around the same time and some of the similar story lines caused changes in the story (strong female character imbued with alien superpowers while dealing with memory loss from some traumatic experience).
Cornetto - Magneto. Makes sense, Tara.
