As someone who speaks Dutch and knows a lot of German, the town names in this campaign are somewhat funny to hear. All the names have actual meanings, and I'm not sure even Monty always fully realises this. And if he does, I'm very curious as to what the hell is going on in some of these places... ;) A bit late, but some examples for those interested: We started in tierhaven. Tierhaven is not completely German, since haven is not a German word. But in German the word hafen does exist, and it sounds very similar. So if you write it as tierhafen, it means "animal harbour". But this doesn't make sense since tierhaven is in the middle of the forest. But as written now it means "animal haven" as a mix of German and English, with tier meaning animal and haven as haven. So in that way it might make sense. Schaffburg means "castle of creation". But there's no castle in schaffburg from what we're told... :) And if you write it with one f, as schafburg, it means "sheep castle" ... :D And now they're heading to todesfeld, which should be pronounced approximately as toad-ess-felt, not toddsfelt as they pronounce it now. And todesfeld literally means "deathfield" or "field of the dead". Which sounds incredibly ominous if it's supposed to be just a regular town. :) And they are going to drannmund afterwards eventually, which literally means "drann mouth" or "mouth of the drann", which makes sense since it's a city at the mouth of the river drann... Achtungwald means "attention forest" or "attention wood". Sounds a bit strange even in English. And then some others: Geldstad literally means "city of money" or "moneycity". But Monty said it's where all the gold mints are in this world so it makes sense. Altbrucke means "old bridge". Leuchten means "to light" or "lighting". Ansben simply means "otherwise". Tonsberg means "tone mountain" Landhelm means "land helmet" or "helmet of the land" with land in the sense of a country or nation. Glothfen means "glowmarsh", with fen coming from the old German Fenna (like the old English fenn). If Monty consciously chose all these names with a reason, I'm very curious to see what goes on in all these places! ;)
Joe did such an awesome job roleplaying and keeping a straight face when everyone was making jokes about Master Noodles. You could tell he wanted to laugh, but just stayed in character and tried be serious about it. That made it even easier to imagine the actual scene happening and made it even funnier. Great job everyone. You guys rock.
I love the complicated legal standing of magic and mages in this setting. The academy can just take magic children at their discretion, but they are not allowed to participate directly in warfare. No magic users are allowed on the throne. Its all very fleshed out and interesting.
I need recommendations this group is my 1st UA-cam d&d channel and I feel like I'm spoiled because they are so good it's hard to find another that comes close
I am so excited for the reveal of the moral and historical quandaries - and SO excited about the fact that there is really no guarantee that all of these PCs have matching or even really similar perspectives. Also the fact that Master Noodles is still a moral grey area is amazing. I love it. Also what is Rudi's connection to this town and situation! AH. :D So awesome.
Every character that Monty gives voice to is incredible! The number of times I sat and smiled at his Master Noodles conversations are too many to say without embarrassment haha! As a fairly new DM I aspire to his levels of character expression and creation someday
Noodles isn't that odd of a name, given that Wilhelm's last name is a semi-poisonous flower. Though I am more curious on how this episode would have changed if Draken Force would have sided with the Silver Order over the Amethyst Academy
The way Noodles describes Delirium, it almost reminds me of uranium. Poisonous, but it can be used for things like producing energy and medicine. Just a thought.
Wow! This episode is my favorite so far. So Drakkenheim like! I was missing this political intrigue with the delirium scourge looming in the backgroud, spreading to another city through the river. No dice rolling and yet so much tension! I like both NPCs and PCs. Master Noodles at the mad Duke's side is a vivid picture in my mind, very well flashed out. They feel like they just came out a gothic novel. As well as the final discussion between Rudi, wrath and Will. Congrats guys, really well done.
I think this is one of my favourite episodes so far. There is so much going on just under the surface, with hints at the secrets all three characters keep - both upfront as well as non-verbally. I absolutely love your roleplay here! Also, I think it's cool to see the characters get drawn into the conflicts and complications of the wider world again. I'm really interested to see where this party might end up in the tug-of-war that is Werstermar compared to the party in Dungeons of Drakkenheim. I have an inkling it might not be the same place as Drakkenforce ended up in... Btw: Sorry for spamming comments. I might just have binged through all your live-play content, which might have really captured my interest and imagination... But thats just conjecture! ;) Anyway, sorry for the slew of comments again, but expect more, because I have thoughts to get of my chest now that I have more of the whole picture. Hope it helps with the algorithm at least. :) Can't wait for the next new episode!
Theory time. Willhelm is a VonKessel and Rudi was part of the strike force to blow the dam. Also how cool would it be to see Wrath and Sebastian compete for the position of Archmage of Drakkenheim
@@snazzyfeathers oh yeah totally, but I still think it would be some fun role play. It might be a fun one shot and just for fun we could throw in Jills Tabaxi character from the untold tales as a third competitor just for fun.
@@jacobreichert6239 A battle royale, I could see it. Joe would have Wrath and Pluto, Kelly would have Sebastian and Wilhelm, etc. It would be an interesting fight for sure
Yeah, from their reactions Willhelm von Kessel and Rudi as part of the strike force to take down the dam was also my first thought. Do we have more clarity on that by now? (I'm catching up...)
SPOILERS for later episodes 2:00:20 Beforehand Willhelm had painstakingly put his hood up, making sure his face is at least partially concealed. But as soon as Noodle mentions that the Duke is blind he takes the hood down again... :D Love the details and little hints, Kelly! Still having the suspicion that Rudi was part of the strike team that took down the dam, btw...
The Amethyst Academy has a role in all this, in The end it will have to be decided if The Amethyst Academy is helping fix or making delerium problem worse, only time will tell. So the amethyst academy is allowed to take a child, if they shows signs of the natural gift of magic, sorcery. The cold iron uses by the silver order that is able to destroy delerium, how rare is the material to create more of it.
It just feels to me like Kelly, Jill, and Joe as players really hate authority as their characters seem to instantly be opposed to Allerians in every campaign, even when they are bringing up perfectly valid points to their actions.
Totally makes sense from Wrath and Wilhelm. Being a rogue and a warlock, and having backgrounds that reinforce a hesitation to trust foreigners. But I feel Rudy needs some backstory to explain that. A Sheriff of a small town with no central government has pretty small ground to object to a UN type force operating to protect the weak far and wide. They’re pretty good story tellers though. I’ll bet something explains this a bit later.
@@pw3829 Could simply be that they are far too rigid and stubborn for Rudi's liking. Personally, I feel that anyone taking a more cautious and measured approach are bound to clash with them over something.
I was going to say as a small town sheriff, she would be more likely to be skeptical of foreign authority, especially if she was a former westemar soldier
I think it should have gone like this, Monty, "Wrath, describe your horse." Joe, "Worried... very worried." "Suckling Duck"? Surely you mean Suckling Duck-billed Platypus? "Stephen Hodges..." :D :D :D Joe's delivery was very funny. The Captain of the Guard says, "What is your business with the Dook!" and I thought, "Has Monty got Matt Colville in to do a guest NPC?" "Some kind of Awful Cabbage", this sounds bigger than ducks, it sounds positively perpendicular.
For context for people, “suckling” in eg “suckling pig” refers to slaughtering a pig when it is still young enough that it is drinking its mother’s milk, so it doesn’t make sense for a duck
I really love this series; you all are amazing!! Monty, your skill as a GM, weaving stories and telling all parts of a story, is a treasure and to be emulated! Kelly, Jill, and Joe, well done with each of your roleplay! Your characters are very enjoyable in many ways. If I was going to leave a piece of constructive criticism, I would love more consistency from the players characters. For example, they rake a noble over the coals for weapon dealing, hate on Elyrians for fighting, but don't care when the amythyst academy sells weapons or fights with pretty squabbles, etc. Sometimes seems like their characters are having bleedover from Veo, Pluto, and Sebastian's issues rather than staying consistent with their own character. But that's all! Otherwise, your entire series on UA-cam is amazing and definitely one of my all time favorites!! Keep it up!
The elerians being rivals is a great touch and a great way to put some tension into the story without combat, tension in the plot and tie whats going on around westemar to what the characters are doing. And the dam and the delirium in the water are great ways to have new fresh ways for delirium to be effecting people. I can't wait to see how this all goes!

In my campaign sorcerer's and warlocks are hunted down by the arcane schools but on the other hand religious types and cults will grant succour depending on bloodline and patrons
God I love the little tidbits of political lore we’ve learned throughout this series! The small facts about the Academy and the Order we learned this episode were very tasty
1:31:47 as a 2.5 gnomish woman myself (fine, player of) I'm excited about this very small mage. People laugh at Giggleswick too, Master Noodles, until they see her infiltrate their castle by spider climbing their walls and attacking with her powerful infused-crossbow and steel unicorn.

So I just hopped on at the beginning of Shadows and I LOVE this setting and world-building. However, I don’t have time to go back through all of Dungeons. Is there any kind of resource someone can point me to for a recap/reference guide? Particularly in regards to the factions/civil war/history/previous characters?
Clayton Staley Take it one episode at a time, and you can get through them. If it takes a year, it should all still be there. And then the one off sessions, and finally the mini series Kelly ran. It is not that much if you pace yourself...
Hi love both the series but i have a worldbuilding question. My friends want me to DM a game based on your setting, my issue is one of them wants to be a cleric. The falling fire and flame religions seem to worship a godless religion/ more of a principle/divine fire. even that doesn't seem to have any stated doctrine/tenets of behaviour what i mean is no gods have ever been mentioned that i remember as a source of divine power.(apart from the angels that empower paladins) i take it this is intentional or am i missing something. just having issues reconciling with the standard cleric archetypes and the player question of what their god reperesents,or who they are, and is potentialy active as an actual being in the world. thx in advance
There quick answer is that the sacred fire believes all gods are demons. They worship the light, one could be a cleric of the light if they want, really you could do any subclass and make it work as just divine spells pulled from the sacred flame. Some clerics worship older religions, more nature and elemental, raw and ancient, if the cleric wanted to simply be “of an older faith” they again can do anything. We also leave it open ended for character input. I once designed a dwarf forge cleric who worshiped his Dwarven god of the forge and went to Drakkenheim to find the meteoric iron. Be open about concepts. Hope this helped.
@@DungeonDudes Thx for thr reply, all gods are demons. I can go with that, or moreso all extraplanar's dangerous so the world is shut off from the normal cosmology, which the meteor broke. Clerics can worship any god, just that there distant, ie like our world, you don't find them walking down the street ala avatars. Maybe Ao, whos not big on any stated morality as long as the universe keeps existing "I don't care what you believe in as long as its something" thx again
@@garynicolson5192 Yeah, as a more in-depth answer -- in the world of Drakkenheim, gods do not physically manifest in the world. Although their followers believe such events have occurred, there is no conclusive evidence gods personally interfere in mortal affairs or even speak directly with mortals at all. Instead, the inspired words of prophets, oracles, and heroes laid the foundations for the world’s religions. Today, there are hundreds of faiths with many different beliefs, doctrines, and practices. Clerics, druids, and paladins learn to cast spells by channeling the supernatural forces of light and shadow which underscore the cosmos. The Church of the Sacred Flame worships this divine light itself -- they believe the light holds back the darkness, less shadows consume the world. Thus, for them, it is the duty for all mortals to Keep the Flame, Follow the Light, and Spread the Flame. Other religions have different beliefs about the balance between light and shadow. In the region of the world where our campaign occurs, there are only minor shrines and temples in remote areas to these old gods, however. Violating one’s religious tenets does not cause a cleric, druid, or paladin to lose their powers. However, a crisis of faith brought on by some discordant change in behaviour and morality can cause an individual to lose these powers. There are other powerful entities who call themselves gods, including demon lords and other outsiders. These entities can manifest in the world and do speak to their followers (often). Such entities make pacts with warlocks, but cannot grant divine power to clerics, druids, or paladins.
As a server in a restaurant, I routinely walked 15 to 20 miles a day. 2mph average for 8 to 10 hours. Wasn't all that hard, and walking wasn't the actual focus, just a side effect.
A questioj for anyone that can answer is if we can know (or if they say future) how the timeline works for the campaigns. Like what was happening in drakkeheim at first episode of shadows of drakkenheim?
Probably one of my favorite chapters for its fun conversarion. Love the Emerald Inn! Think my character would have a crush on Gloria, which is a forbidden pairing to a Warlock… even a Celestial one. Not sure how that would turn out!
This episode is bewildering because the party spends some time arguing about the evil nature of delerium with a paladin that lost her sibling to it in a tavern full of her friends. All this after facing horror after horror that is somehow related to this material, after seeing the monstrosities and the corruption. For all the great RP drakkenheim has, this is the lowest point for me.
Hi Dudes, awesome as usual... Is there by chance an explanation why I can't find this episode on Spotify? 14 is there and 12... Just wanted to listen to it again cause it was so great but couldn't find it...
Weird. Episode 13 was uploaded to our podcasts last week, and appears on the other platforms. We have our team looking in to it now. Thanks for letting us know.
just curious, is Gloria of the silver order a paladin? as I thought only women could be flamekeepers and only men could be paladins. or maybe she's a cleric of life or battle
Hah, can't get away from Germanic placenames in both of my usual DnD shows, this and Critical Role, it seems (Zemnian is basically German, and the Dwendalian empire has a lot of Germanic influence too, along with other Eastern European influences) It's fun :)
2:11:23 I think Wilhelm tone with Duke was not right. You cannot be sarcastic with that laugh because you are in presence of a Duke and Duke are next to Royalty even if Duke Fritz may not be directly relatives of King and there are certain mannerism standing on ceremony along with words like Your Grace while Your Royal Highness for Duke related to the King.
Great episode. The political drama, the hard choices to make in the future. Can't wait to see more! Makes me wish I could play in one of Monty's games.
Is there anywhere we can read about the Lore of the world ?? It’s very interesting and as I’ve really only started watching since Shadows started, I’m quite intrigued with the background
"In the most Canadian fashion" 😅. As a Canadian, I can say that your comment was spot on, but much less true in the capital cities (just my personal experience).
I watched dungeons of drakkenheim multiple times before yes yes yes, and just now getting into Shadows. Honestly kinda surprised the country bumpkin sheriff with a huge family isn't a 'blind follower' of the main religion the Sacred Flame
Paladin no, your oath is what gives and drives your magical abilities. As for a Cleric that is a bit tricky. If I read correctly divine magic in Monty’s world is more an expression of their own moral code and willpower within their own set way. There are gods that exemplify those ideals but do not grant the power that divine casters wield.

I can't wait to catch up and see how Drakkenforce and the Duskwardens will meet and work togetherrrr
I do love this group more than season 1.
OMG was Rudi one of the cammandos that blew up the Dam!!
1:11:29 - Bergen? City name?
1:15:46 - Colories? Having plenty of color; colorful? Making Color Dyes for Textiles?
Omg. Was rudy part of the commando team that blew the dam? Was that how she was part.of the civil war?
Chud the Mighty: the one, true king!
Wow.. Well done Monty! The Duke was disgusting and hilarious and tragic but also believable. Love it!!!
I love lore and political episodes, monty takes such details it's insane !!
Idea for name for Wilhelm's horse... Sparkle! He already has the sword, Twilight!
Rudi's horse... Applejack!
Raph... Rarity, magic user with a cat!
YES YES YES..... however her cousens name is Ramen Noodels.
Dudes! Love the Monty Python references!
I love the wrath lore
"the smell of suckling duck" at 23:56 - did I hear right? Suckling duck? Interesting biology...
I usually don't enjoy drunk scenes, but yours was fantastic.
Joe missed a golden opportunity to name his horse Ruin. 😂
Hi love both the series but i have a worldbuilding question.
My friends want me to DM a game based on your setting, my issue is one of them wants to be a cleric.
The falling fire and flame religions seem to worship a godless religion/ more of a principle/divine fire.
even that doesn't seem to have any stated doctrine/tenets of behaviour
what i mean is no gods have ever been mentioned that i remember as a source of divine power.(apart from the angels that empower paladins)
i take it this is intentional or am i missing something.
just having issues reconciling with the standard cleric archetypes and the player question of what their god reperesents,or who they are, and is potentialy active as an actual being in the world.
thx in advance
Maybe Ao, whos not big on any stated morality as long as the universe keeps existing "I don't care what you believe in as long as its something"
thx again
Great as always
1:27:48. the delirium sword. Also the illyrians will not like the sword
Excellent show per usual, thanks.
As a server in a restaurant, I routinely walked 15 to 20 miles a day. 2mph average for 8 to 10 hours. Wasn't all that hard, and walking wasn't the actual focus, just a side effect.
Did Monty just say he and Kelly talk out of there butt's 😂
Ace Ventura flashbacks hard right now!!
1:25:30 is that a monty python reference
Im.totally stealing Wilhelms rules for my next character. Writing them down everytime he recites one lmao
@@DungeonDudes Thanks a lot... Brilliant work btw...
just curious, is Gloria of the silver order a paladin?
as I thought only women could be flamekeepers and only men could be paladins.
or maybe she's a cleric of life or battle
In the Drakkenheim setting, there are a fair few female Paladins. In our Lore the first Paladine was a woman.
I was wondering...where do you guys get your custom character tokens from. They´re quite remarkable :)
Hah, can't get away from Germanic placenames in both of my usual DnD shows, this and Critical Role, it seems (Zemnian is basically German, and the Dwendalian empire has a lot of Germanic influence too, along with other Eastern European influences)
It's fun :)
This RP though!!!
Ehrmagerd so good!
That has been really interesting episode in regards to lore, worldbuilding and political knife fighting :> Awesome episode!
23:43 Suckling Duck! What?
Great episode. The political drama, the hard choices to make in the future. Can't wait to see more! Makes me wish I could play in one of Monty's games.
yeah a new video of the campaign i like them thanks you dudes and jill
It would be pretty cool if the dusk wardens joined the silver order and aleria and ended up on opposing sides from draken force.
Is there anywhere we can read about the Lore of the world ?? It’s very interesting and as I’ve really only started watching since Shadows started, I’m quite intrigued with the background
There is a fandom online, the info isn't super in depth but the book they are making will be better
We all know if Rudi had to give up her name for the Amethyst Academy she would just be called Master Apple Pie or just simply Master Pie.
"In the most Canadian fashion" 😅.
As a Canadian, I can say that your comment was spot on, but much less true in the capital cities (just my personal experience).
Does anyone know how he made such a beautiful world map?
Sorry if they explain how, I might have missed that part.
I used Wonderdraft, Photoshop, and a lot of time :)
I watched dungeons of drakkenheim multiple times before yes yes yes, and just now getting into Shadows. Honestly kinda surprised the country bumpkin sheriff with a huge family isn't a 'blind follower' of the main religion the Sacred Flame
Other than that everything so far has been great, I'm looking forward to getting caught up
Bishop.....Salamander.....and Petey.
I wonder if i were to play this campaign and be a clericnor paladin would i have to be a member of the sacred fire?
Paladin no, your oath is what gives and drives your magical abilities. As for a Cleric that is a bit tricky. If I read correctly divine magic in Monty’s world is more an expression of their own moral code and willpower within their own set way. There are gods that exemplify those ideals but do not grant the power that divine casters wield.
3 more pies Jill, are you eating for 2 😂
I hear the Duke's voice and I picture a decrepit Krusty the Clown
