That's Virginia O'Brien, singing without moving her face. The story was that she was very scared the first time she went out to sing and that she tensed and froze. It got a positive response and she built on that to some very cool effect: ua-cam.com/video/FqXp3RAyOIo/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/P0b074CwlVM/v-deo.html
@@kevinlewis1017 I always liked her: I first saw her in "The Harvey Girls", where she has another number, with Judy Garland and Cyd Charisse. As I understand it, unfortunately, her character in that movie was dropped midway through shooting: she was pregnant. Garland was going through one of a series of troubles. This delayed shooting, and the O'Brien's pregnancy became too pronounced to hide (I blame the studio for this, not Garland, since they were ultimately responsible for feeding her the pills that exacerbated her traumas).
It's interesting that whenever I bring up THE BIG STORE the response is always about how much they love the Virginia O'Brien segment. That was her schtick...deadpan singing. Go figure. Also, it was Harold Hecht who partnered with Burt Lancaster as film producers (MARTY!), not Ben Hecht. Good show, old beans. Brian sounds like a mensch...just like his mentor, Garry Marshall...one of the nicest men I met in show biz.
I was listening to one of the older podcasts and I realized Matthew was the only person
of the 3 hosts that ever used the word "whilst".
I love Brian, he's so enthusiastic and passionate...... even if he is wrong about Night in Casablanca.

I used to think the Virginia O'Brien part in the Big Store was odd and annoying but now I find it fascinating and genius!

I caught that Hecht thing too. Marty was a good film and worth a watch.
Well...at least he was enthusiastic. But I am still not too sure about the Marx collectibles he might own. ;)
