My mum was a trained opera singer (soprano) and one of the techniques she had to learn was to be able to sing full on with a lit candle in front of her mouth without moving the flame. It was all about controlling the breathing from the diaphragm and she was amazing! Her "One Fine Day" from Madama Butterfly blew me away!
But we all need to know if it blew the flame away?

I’m learning to sing (I’m 50-ish and started 4 yrs ago). I can sing without blowing the candle out now. That is still an exercise you do! My teacher is an opera singer but I sing gospel, Motown, jazz. It’s all the same techniques. I can hear how very well trained Mr Sledge was at singing. He wasn’t a natural at all. No way. There’s a lot of training in there. Just listen to his vowels.
Gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Percy brings us to our deepest memories, and tears for what he sings. There are only a few songs that do this, each one a treasure. Thank you Fil.

Thanks for your analysis of these music legends. Percy Sledge was such a great R&B, soul & gospel singer. He is best known for this song "When A Man Loves A Woman" back in 1966. But he had other songs such as "Warm & Tender Love", "It Tears Me Up", "Take Time To Know Her", "Love Me Tender", "Cover Me", "I'll Be Your Everything", "Sunshine" etc.

What an absolute brilliant performance.
Actually met him twice ,great guy sadly missed.
I got to see Percy sing this song in a small club called Peabody's Warehouse in Virginia Beach. The stage was barely above floor level, so everyone on the small dance floor right in front of the stage sat on the floor. Live brass and Percy hitting those wailing notes in close confines did not disappoint. One of the most memorable music moments in my life. "It Tears Me Up", "Out Of Left Field", "Take Time To Know Her" - He was great. I guess he was working hard, or the lights were hot, because his silk (probably polyester) jump suit was soaked down the front by the end of the show. (Saw Peaches & Herb there too. Not sure which Peaches.)

Oh man, There are songs made for a singer and singers that are made for a song and this one is both. When Percy belts out those words When a man Loves a Woman, ...there's something more than words and music going on here. You just can't describe that something special that reaches deep down inside, ...whew!
My first concert as a kid I was awestruck. There were other performers there but I only remember Percy and now I know why thanks Fil. ❤

I'm from Australia 🇦🇺 and our G.O.A.T. to the world is John Farnham.He has this natural talent and can sing any genre. I also wish our young performers now could learn what genuine, true vocals and performance are. Bring back live bands and back up vocalists, please.😊 We do have them still here.
I remember when this song came out. It was indeed a huge hit. I was just a kid, but I knew that it was a tremendous performance--and, of course, a tremendous song, too. This was and remains a marvelous achievement.

This was my now deceased eldest sister's favorite song ever from the time she was a teenager and it was released. Every time I hear the song, my memory goes back to the times when she'd listen and sing along to it on her transistor radio. Thanks so much for your analysis.
He played several times a year in my hometown in Louisiana. He would sing this 3x in a 3 hour show. Great guy from what everyone around this area said.

Because it was his biggest hit and people wanted to hear it. The venue was a nightclub. Not a concert venue.

Percy appears in the BBC series Soul Deep. He said he had that song "in his head" since he was a child. Jerry Wexler says, "I heard this song that came out of northeast Alabama, so I had to go there". He brought Aretha and they made I Never Loved a Man/Do Right Woman at F.A.M.E. Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals Alabama.

Dang, the emotion, rawness, lyrics just get me right from the beginning.
Thank you for this. I was a university senior and loved this. I did my practice teaching in a very white high school in a very black city and told them it was my favorite but I was stunned when they hadn't heard of Percy Sledge. But this was a time when white radio didnt play black music. Big hits were often then rerecorded by a white group for white radio. Luckily things started to change but it was an odd time in the US.

They are all such dynamic performers who give their all to capture the essence of a song. And each bring their own personalities and vocal abilities. Fil, in the 1960s we all heard these songs on AM radio, through one car speaker. And the music was WONDERFUL. It's terrific to watch you celebrate that same music 65 years later.
Supposedly the song was created as an on-stage stream of consciousness; Percy's girlfriend had just broken up with him. He told the band to back him with blues and let his emotion flow.
What an invaluable analysis you are able to provide with your technical comments. It just made his performance that much more appreciated.

This was my another one of my all time slow dance songs...Another great job Fil...Very enjoyable...
A classic, even as a kid I knew this was an incredible vocal. The only little thing that bugged me even then was the out of tune horn section at the very end. In spite of the out of tune trumpet, this was extremely popular. Nice that in this live version the horn section got it right.
This is one of those timeless songs that even the latest generation has heard being performed by someone somewhere. Though it's provably being corrected to today's "sound standards."

Thank you, Fil. You've done it again. You analysed a song I've been listening to since it was released and now I can appreciate how good the performer truly is. I was sure he was belting out those high notes and shortening his life with every performance. Now i know he was a better singer than I imagined.

Really enjoy your channel, as a musician and singer with relative perfect pitch what makes it interesting to the human ear is listening and if you think of the great orchestras it's virtually impossible for them to be perfectly in Tune. Think of the strings with their vibrato, none universally in perfect pitch. That is what holds our attention.

The original was recorded a couple of miles from my house, I grew up in the same area that Percy did. He was a big hit at my house so my Mom put his music on every night at bedtime. We fell asleep listening to this and Cover Me. Brings back good memories. Austin Brown and Home Free do an amazing cover of this.

I could tell from the first phrase that he isn't lip-synching to the record---I remember that record so clearly. I love that he moves around the melody.
The slightly ‘off pitch’ horns in the original studio release of this song is what makes it a real classic!
Others try to sing this (Michael Bolton) but can’t carry it. The only version that comes close is Josh Ledet. You either got it or you don’t…Percy slays it!

FIL, please do a video on pre-1972ish live performances, and the fact that NONE of the musicians or singers have monitors or any way to hear themselves. The fact that Percy was as accurate as he was is astounding ! The Beatles are an excellent example as they frequently had 100 watt amps completely wash out from the crowds' screams. Mal Evans (Beatles roadie+) said he couldn't hear them at all in Candlestick Park, and he was behind George's amp, right next to Ringo drumming. Those older performers really trained to get it right. They played many more live sets than most modern bands could imagine. It was their bread and butter.

He performed this song at Ritzy's nightclub in Nottingham. It was re-issued in 1987 so it must have been around that time. Despite everyone being there to dance, I recall us al being stunned by the performance, absolutely amazing.
Percy was from Alabama, neighboring state to my state Mississippi. We’ve had multiple artist from Mississippi and Alabama.
My school music teacher was classically trained opera singer, she could fill the theatre at school over a few 100 kids "singing" It was just so easy for her, but she spent years training.

Great analysis. I always enjoy the ones featuring the great soul artists of the 1960s. The performance was recorded live on The !!!! Beat (TV Program) Vol 6 # Show 26 (1966), hosted by Otis Redding. The backing band was Otis's one, also appearing on The Ready Steady Go September 1966 Otis Redding special and on his album recordings for the Whisky a Go Go dates in April 1966. Both video recordings are available on UA-cam and worth a watch.

That microphone is a Shure 635A and was known as "the hammer of the Industry" because they were very robust. You could, and we did, hammer a nail into a board. Small nails, but sure, nails just the same. Great for on location news, sports, etc it became a TV industry standard. Certainly wasn't the best choice for voice recording for a record but plenty of clubs, stages, and TV studios had them because they worked after being dropped, tossed about, or dunked in a beer.

I just read an article on Dusty Springfield's only number one hit in the UK....you don't have to say you love me. It was recorded in a stairwell because the acoustics were perfect. They say it was the best performance ever.
Feel free to analyse my favourite soul singer of all time, he has so many hits to choose from. I especially like his take on "The Dark End of the Street", "Spooky", "Take Time to Know Her" etc etc. Cheers Fil as always great video.
I use other terminology (CVT out of Denmark), but I totally appreciate your point. I really think that volume control is THE most important part of singing. It also helps lots with pitching. My BF is an amazing singer and his volume control and pitcing is exceptional. That's no coincidence.
The Complete Vocal Institute in Copenhagen have a very geeky take on vocal production, that really does emphasize the importance of using certain volumes (and vowel choices) and necessary twang to be able to get that relaxed feeling in singing. They also say singing is about "holding back the breath" -all the things you are talking about here!
I found it incredibly useful. Geeky singers might appreciate checking it out.
That "nasal" sound you mention here, is, in my opinion, use of twang, which definitely helps with very high or low notes. And it gives you more apparent.volume - perhaps that "natural compression" you mention? I certainly."cheat" by use of twang in this way. You can see the effect of heavy twang Vs minimal easily on a spectrum analyser - try it! Seems to put more of the overtones into the range in which human hearing is most sensitive.... I'm not sure if this is the same thing as "the tenor's format". I don't know enough about classical singing techniques or musical acoustics to say for sure.
Twang is a particular configuration of your vocal anatomy in the throat - though "making the Brian Johnson face" is a neat physical "mnemonic" that will get most people into heavy twang! I've seen films made by the CVI in conjunction with the speech research department of a UK university. Also other video effects and metal vocals like grunting. It's fascinating. Check it out, I'm sure some of it is online!
PS. If you continue to apply twang even harder, you get distortion :-). Rock n Roll!
