Yup it's called champeta. As a congolese, I was surprised to see how famous congolese music is in Colombia. I like Colombian music as well. Btw, I was in Aruba in 2018 and loved it. Beautiful island
As a half-Tanzanian half-German child, I never could explain why certain music made me feel so safe and sheltered. Now I know, it is the African guitar riff syle that I've known and loved since I was a little child. Asante sana!
This guy is fucking nuts, the most beautiful style of guitar playing ive ever listen to,I can see how those simple chords can be turned into magic, its kind of like surf rock and punk rock mixed chords to be fair
Joyful! It's lemon floating in iced tea as dark as the Congo river. With a sprig of mint..... When a guitarist says "this says" you can tell he places human value to his works, which gives them true life. I really dig this.
I was introduced to Soukous when I saw Diblo Dibala in Central Park, Summer of ‘91. Musically, it was the best concert I’ve ever been to. I have always loved Soukous ever since, and haven’t found any guitarist as amazing as Diblo.
+jack beezle That's true. Actually you can learn western blues/rock solos because there they explain loads of theory which will make your life easier when you migrate to soukous.
i don't really know how to play the guitar, tho i'm in the process of learning in school, and for my assignment ive to write an essay on african guitar styles and im choosing congolese guitar style (soukous) and palm wine! just stumbled across this while doing some research, this is such a happy song!! :D
Chord tones are key for blending both the rhythm and lead so that they dance on the same stage singing off the same hymn sheet. Here is a great example of music making melody with one another - not just a mindless fumble. Love it.
Jambo Joseph. Asanti sana. Mzuri. I first heard Soukous in Nairobi in 1986 played by a band from the Zaire region. I was hooked. You are right the complexity, the subtlety of it is endless, the beats are so compelling and yet whimsical. God Bless you..Joseph.
I’m from the U.S. Midwest. Not a musician or anything, but I discovered Tabu Ley Rochereau about 25 years ago when I was only about 23 or 23. I didn’t know anything about Soukous, but it appealed to me instantly. I remember that it made me happy. Still does. 😊
I have listened to Lokwa Kanza and he blew my mind. There is more to soukous or Congo music than meets the ear. His music is easy listening giving more prove than you people are naturally gifted musicians
I came across soukous about twenty five years back and have always liked how it gets along . I think its a dance hall style . Wondered why the sound has never been taken up in the West .
So true!!.....there is technique...then there is soul!! Place the same instrument in the hands of virtuoso players from different parts of the world, and different things come out!! Each region, each player brings their own soul into the music...that something from inside them that cannot be replicated in a textbook or tutorial, or even practice.
@ Joseph: You would play blues absolutely fine! Blues is universal. It's something no one can learn, or someone can teach. Blues is passed on from person to person. it's what you experience when you listen to blues. it affects people different ways. Say I showed you some old blues song I picked up from Furry Lewis, (the way you showed me some Soukous) You'd be playing 'Your blues' with a soukous flair, or vice versa, You have now just created a blues for some one to pick up on. Your feelings, your soul is now out there for another soul to connect with musically. Your blues melt with their blues. It's all universal, and it's nothing but feeling what you're dealing to get others reeling. Thank you for sharing soukous with everybody. I absolutely love it!
what he said about how you can learn a different cultures music, but it just wont sound the same, is soo true. Its just like a person who learns to speak a different language.
Greetings from India! I always aim to listen to the intro song just once, but 10-20 times is more likely. Joseph Adamson, I join most of others to ask for the name of the song. Please do post the complete version of this song.
Is there a full version of this solo, I love it, well played, you are a master I keep playing it again and again while I am working, like you said, its intoxicating, i made my American friends listen to it because they kept seeing me dancing in my chair and they also want to listen to a full version.
The DVD will be ready in Feb 2011, I am also recording a backing track to play along with plus you you cancreate your music with it. I hope this what everybody who want to learn about soukous is been waiting for HAPPY NEW YEAR

I come from very different cultures and kind of an amateur musician myself....I would like to hear your comments on the music of Ricardo Lemvo and this guitar sound mix with latin beats....there are others...a lot of Dominican/New york musicians playing a kind of Merengue and particularly Bachata genre..the guitar play sounds a lot like soukous.....
