@mikehoaglin6461 We had the same reaction. She is a beautiful person, who creates beautiful music. The interviewer was disrespectful wasn't he? I doubt he has ever connected with her music.
Thing I really love about Enya as a person it appears that she's never conformed to the music industry and she's stayed true to herself in the purest way.
Enya is just a very nice, introverted person who has an almost supernaturally brilliant gift and she happens to be rich and famous because of it. I wish more of our current celebrities were more like Enya. I also love how people seldom comment on what she looks like. Her looks are not important.
But that's where you're missing her one marketing tool- video. Yes, she would have gotten a certain amount of play on radio without anyone ever seeing her, but since she doesn't tour or do concerts, people know her from her videos, and movie producers use her music after meeting with her. So, her looks have played a part in her success. If she looked like the Hunchback of Notre Dame or a human gargoyle, her music might still be loved, but she wouldn't be nearly as successful. People like to say looks don't matter as a certain noble statement, but the truth is, they do, as much as the beauty of flowers in nature is valued by those same people making that noble statement. Of course, the inner soul is what really counts on a higher level, but here on the earthly playing field, looks are a huge factor, fortunately or unfortunately.
Enya's physical appearance is a direct result of her calmness, focus, passion, ethnicity, good erect posture (which can be mainly because of her alma-mater in a national convent school) and happiness (which we don't see it in her from outside). Her state of being is directly related to her state of mind.
"Just"? "Her looks arent important". Well she isnt just anything. She is a genius and highly qualified for what she does. Her looks are an integral part of her identity and an external expression of her spirit as is her voice and mentality. She is unique and is in the position she is in because she is in service to high consciousness and values. She isnt just anything.
"Its the music she wants people to know, not the musician" A beautifully simple statement that would do young talented artists finding their way in such a ruthless industry.
A LEGEND !!! A TRUE MUSICIAN !!! her privacy is important to create her music , this why her music is so beautiful , powerful and pure UNIQUE LADY !!! Blessed with this talent , tied to her roots , she gave the world , her music
Her true talent? It comes from what she's comprised of. Her upbringing, family, spirituality and kind soul. There's nothing shallow or manufactured about her. Most artists don't have that kind of depth.
This aired two weeks before 9/11 attacks. After the tragic event, Only Time began to be picked up by radio stations to play in honor of those who were affected by the attack. ❤❤❤
If you think about it, at the time absolutely no one was making music quite like hers. And its pretty much has been the same ever since. A few artists have had singular songs in a similar vein, but seldom has anyone come close. Only her own family via Clannad and Miriam Stockley with Karl Jenkins, who's performance in Adiemus is often mistaken as being the voice of Enya. But its unto Enya own performance as a literal one-man-show that sets her apart from all other artists. no one can copy her because no one is as talented and gifted as her to produce such songs, at least without the aid of digital intervention.
It's hard to imagine that Enya is just a normal human being like everyone else. It almost feels like she must float around her castle home six inches above the floor wearing flowy dresses and making angelic sounds. Nobody envisions Enya sitting around eating ice cream right out of the container or having a proper poo. Lol
I enjoyed this despite the two-dimensional and trivial comparisons to pop-stars. I have adored Enya and her music since my chldhood of 1988, but the interviewer has no idea who is standing before him to call her 'lucky,' when luck has nothing to do with her paramount talent and hard-earned success.

I have always admired her music and the process in which she undertakes. But I admire even more her unwavering insistence of her privacy which seems to be what keeps her humble. I am proud to say that she is extended family to me. When I met her cousin, I told her to simply tell Enya that she is my absolute favorite musician and that to this day, I frequently listen to her music, especially every time I take a nap and to thank her for getting me through some very difficult times. Her music touches a place in all of us that can make us feel ethereal and hopeful that a better existence is out there when we are done with this earth. How very unique to achieve that without using religion to touch us that way. Thank you Enya. Enjoy the fruits of your very hard labor. And unfortunately, and I know this from the family, she is done with music and enjoying her life. I am sad, but she's earned it.
Wow that last part is so very sad to hear. 😢 I knew that after not releasing another album in late 2022 (7 years after her 2015 album), that she is probably finished with producing more music. Well as you said, she definitely earned her retirement, probably like no other artist has.

Sadly, my sister in law walked out on my brother, but lucky me.....she also left behind the CD! I took one listen and I was hooked. Regarding using the same voice for layering many vocals- especially harmonies- is the perfect way they all perfectly melt into each other. Beach Boys songs are good examples. And the reverb on her voice is so damn rich and gorgeous.
Her singing will always haunt me (in a good way). Her voice sends a shock straight to my soul. Especially the song -May It Be-. She has the voice of an Angel.

I admire her work as much as anyone, but not enough people are acknowledging her producer Nicky Ryan, who I think had a lot to do with the 'Enya sound', and also kudos to them for recording many, if not most, of their songs in Irish!

This is my most favorite interview with/from Enya. Despite the combative tone from the interviewer, this is where Enya seems the most like a celebrity (seeing her work behind the scenes at her music video) here.
Very nice interview from 2001, of the star of our days, Eithne in her living and working environment, where we can also see Nicky in front of his tables of musical arrangements working alongside her. We receive the confessions of Eithne on the transformations that Nicky operates with Art, on the melodies that she proposes. The editing allows us to see a storyboard recording, and to receive some other confidences filtering with the softness of her Angel voice, her smile, such the happiness of finding her home, sweet home.

The same way Prince played all his instruments when recording, Enya sings all the voices in her recorded songs. (Wow.) And like geniuses of their kind, they value their privacy. Prince used to, and Enya still does.
A rare artist with integrity. "Music, not the musician" is her motto. For everyone else these days it's the reverse.
