Absolutely loved the previous version, this latest model is a brilliant all rounder but does lack some ultimate excitement. Not a fan of these VZ3 spec wheels either.... 😬

I bought a Seat Leon Cupra R ST ABT with the pan roof a few months ago after watching your review and couldn't be happier. This new one could do with some work on the styling front with some better wheels and some side skirts like on the R ST.

Seat/Cupra effectively is only allowed AWD on the estate model and not the hatchback probably not to tread on the VW Golf R s toes...
I'm with you on this car the previous incarnation looks so much better. Those plastic alloys are a non starter for me also.
Do those plastic inserts on the wheels come off so you can change the style yourself? I know it sounds crazy but I'm sure I saw the new Skoda Kodiak Vrs review and it mentioned the big plates on its alloys could be removed.. maybe a new trend within VAG. 🤔
If you don't need the space then would the hatch be better option? Once moving I bet just as quick and more fun to drive?

Hi Joe ! Must admit that the previous Seat Leon ST Cupra was much better looking AND it has those knobs and buttons which these new VAG products are missing mostly - these bloody touch button screens etc, as they disract the concentration from driving. Had Leon st 1.4 140bhp, the Leon Cupra 265 manual - it was almost perfect. As living in Finland I am now driving a BMW M135 2013 which is almost perfect for me. Must admit its tuned to 420-430 bhp....
Which is the more fun to drive family car would you say? used 2018 BMW 530i xdrive or 2022 Cupra Leon Estate 310hp if both cost the same to buy?

A good review thanks,.. I agree with your comments early on.. the general looks should show that it is the 'Performance version of the range' ,. I have had a 2017 'Leon Cupra' and now the 'Cupra Formentor'.. 310 but both cars looked very similar to other models in the range, the car you review here sure is a rocket,. but being an 'estate' is why I went for the Formentor.

As a Golf 8 owner who's learned to live with the lack of physical controls, I find the Leon user interface a step too far as it doesn't have the short cut pad for climate, driving modes, assist systems and parking sensors which makes life a lot easier. But I am sure in time I can adapt to it. Leon is cheaper than Golf on the face of it but suspect it depreciates faster and therefore the montlies are about the same. New Golf 8 Estate is a bit sleeker than previous gen and this model is a backwards step aesthetically so think Golf edges it on looks now - that ABT tuned Estate beats them all though.
As always Joe a very informative video but prefer the ABT previous version which I know you liked on those Welsh roads .

Great information Joe! I agree. I would have a Golf R Variant as to me, it looks better and it can be equipped with a Drift Mode! But the Cupra Leon ST does have better value for money as if you want the same equipment in the Golf R Variant as in that Leon ST, your looking at £3000+ more. Have a good week

It's kind of weird that it's not possible to fully customize the configuration in UK. I have ordered this red color with sunroof, standard rims, beats audio, 220V outlet and cloth electric seats (due to global warming and the fact that they don't have cooling option for front seats).
Well, now we know where BMW got the headlights for the upcoming G8x 2-series
So is this coming to Australia or not?

Christ that roof just superb, reminds me of Tour de France where they stand out cars roof from the rear seats with flags. Shame wheels and price and looks generally.
Obviously i love a cupra video. Firstly I don’t really like it. The previous cupra estate mk3 just looked better. Secondly the new golf R estate will have that all new important haldex system with torque vectoring and drift mode. So the golf will handle better with that system and be better in the bends. I’m a little let down by the new cupra Leon as i thought when cupra went out on there own we would get more in looks. We had 3 cupra s but the golf my sway my decision this time.
The formentor is a better looking car.

Equivalent to a Golf R Mk7 maybe not a Mk8. Mk8 will have the tricky rear end which we all know does wonders in its handeling and cornering. Not to mention +20nm more according to VW.
I believe these Cupra cars do not come with the new clever rear differential that is on the VW R models
I like the wheels , didn't realise the turbine bits were plastic though 😬
At least in EU, there are 5 wheels options 2 of which have these pieces of plastic. There are no versions like VZ2, VZ3 etc., so you can fully customize your car. Needless to say, haven't seen anybody picking this specific wheel design.
I would go for the Formentor VZ2 almost the same price.
Still prefer the Seat Leon Cupra R ST tuned by ABT that you reviewed a few years back👍
Great review Joe. Think the Leon Cupra 300 is the current sweet spot and would choose over a GTI Club sport. However, as this model doesn't have the latest Golf R engine and rear diff as far as I know, I'd be looking at the Golf, assuming it has the same setup as the hatchback....
It doesn't have the EA888 engine???
@@peterbennpan7288 Yes, but it doesn't seem to be the latest development, including the torque vectoring rear diff of the latest Golf R. It would appear to be using the same set-up from the previous Golf R with a central Haldex clutch. Only the Mk8 R and forthcoming RS3 appear to be using this more sophisticated system...
today i swapped from the Leon ST hybrid to this one in the video 😁😁 DefInitely NOT this spec though...
Those alloys put me off ordering a VZ3. Apparently you can remove the plastic bits but they still look poor. The alloys on my MK3.5 Cupra 290 are a lot nicer.

Joe, you can get the VZ2 trim and add the panoramic roof as an extra - you then get the 5 spoke alloy wheels without the silly plastic bits!!

Hatch is much better looking , fwd version is more fun to drive and surprisingly faster on the track, can’t compare this to a bmw m5 cs as you would loose the price of the cupra in bmw crazy depreciation.
The new 308 SW should really get a 300HP powerplant, between the Golf and the Leon i'd go 308 all day :D

I agree. However, now the most powerful 308 SW is the 225hp PHEV.
I wanna buy the Peugeot 308 SW but with the diesel and the 8-speed. A car I’d use on a challenge where I drive from London to Paris and back on one tank of fuel (in a few years time).

This is a bit misleading. You talk about this being the best package under 40k, but don't mention that means you cannot add any single option in the configurator that won't push it over 40k. This includes paint, you must have it in the free white colour and no options to keep it under 40k. I dont fanct white on a car again to be honest!
Those wheels are...horrendous!!! They are exactly the opposite of what they should be. To me they look like the ones on electric cars used to lessen drag. And how on earth do us nutters who like to keep their cars super clean, actually manage to clean the wheels themselves and the brake calipers etc??? Madness

you talk about cheap rims, this is the explanation of how aerodynamic alloy rims are built today, it amazes me how a tester does not know this information:
To fit the light alloy base wheel, the inserts are molded and integrated into the outside of the wheel between the spokes of the rim.

Hey I no sure if cupra use here haldex gen plus you need check formentor vz use haldex plus front 33% -rear 67 makes best perfect AWD like do alpina same way that why is better vs start bmw and never spin wheel system but all matter antispin system by haldex sec distribution center front rear for smooth if you don't know learn why cupra formentor vz beat Audi golf any SUV of category u see cupra formentor never spin wheel never think about why vs any road and best VZ 4 hit 0-100 4.5 sec vs snow 4.7 we saw test that's numbers hard do any SUV trust me. Cupra vs golf or vs VW man you need see Brand cupra racing company is much better vs Audi or VW stability flat ok don't try compare Ball vs balls is not same.

Looks a little too much, MK7 Golf GTi/GTD was no looker either but sharper. Wheels kill this Cupra. It is estates like these that are helping kill wagons. And buy bloody SUV's. I'll just wait a year for Emira Lotus and carry on using a hack vehicle in car trade. Car is a car. I'm huge fan MK8 golf in that yellow juice green chromey bits mid trim level, just lovely
