What a great teacher. Touched on so many mistakes beginning players make. I'm a banjo player and everything Sierra is talking about applies to banjo. Absolutely blows my mind to see her play with Bela Fleck then with Corey Wong not to mention her own band. Learning to play complicated songs in different genres in such a short amount of time! So talented! 🎵🎼💪

Thanks Sierra, what a great pep talk and reference to the tools we can use as musicians. Metronomes: a friendly little rhythm section on a phone. Recording yourself: a way to take a step back observe, correct, and improve. Stay physically relaxed: tension never improves playing. Practice slow and work up to speed: songs that seem mind-blowingly fast at first start to open up and weirdly have more space than they did at first. Kind of a time paradox. You're so accomplished and heart felt it's always a pleasure to hear you play and sing.

Thanks Sierra, excellent tuition, I used to follow Segovia on the classical guitar. He would practice 16 hours a day before a concert. But his fundamental lesson was to play slowly and then slowly again until it becomes natural when you feel the speed at your safe pace.

Weird. I'd swear on the intro to your Shady Grove lesson you are moving your entire forearm to pick. Now you are clearly just moving your wrist up and down. I suppose a master of the instrument can manage it either way!

because she's playing slowly there, you can do what you like at a slow speed. Check out Troy Grady as he talks about the way that many teachers demonstrate something slowly quite differently from how they actually play at speed
