  • Ben Weinman takes us on a trip to the early days of the punk and hardcore scene, where breaking the rules and doing new things was the norm in this excerpt from his in-depth Soundfly course, Ben Weinman: The Business of Uncompromising Art: soundfly.com/courses/the-busi...

    About this video:
Ben talks about how labels like Sub Pop, discord, and factory were born out of necessity, and how the idea of exclusivity creating value is something that the music and art industries are only just catching up to now.
Ben shares some of the lessons that he and his band, The Dillinger Escape Plan, learned in the early days of the underground punk scene. He talks about the DIY ethos that was so prevalent, where if you wanted to play a show, you made a show happen. He also discusses the importance of connections and the subculture of the tribe, where bands would stay at each other's houses and put each other up because they had no money to get hotel rooms.
But perhaps the most important lesson that Ben shares is to not wait for the best gear, recording equipment, or cameras to get to work. He talks about how he found his first guitar hanging over a bar that said Michelob on it and spray painted it silver to make it work. And how, at every show, he would ask someone to borrow their amplifier because he didn't have one of his own.
If you're a fan of punk or hardcore music, or if you're an artist looking to learn from the early pioneers of the DIY ethos, then this video is a must-watch. Ben Weinman's stories and lessons will inspire you to get to work and make things happen, no matter what resources you have available to you.
