I’m trying to improve my ‘less waste’ eco minimalist habits to be closer to zero waste minimalism. In order that my minimalist home can be as eco concious and zero waste as possible.
Over the coming weeks I will be taking additional steps towards this minimalism goal and minimalist mindset. By adapting some of my minimalist habits even more. This will involve decluttering a few things but also decluttering certain lifestyle habits & mindsets also.

I am definitely not trying to judge your decision to declutter the Buddha, but I had a close friend who in her effort to declutter, got rid of everything that brought her joy and ended up depressed. It seems to me you truly enjoy your nightly ritual of lighting your Buddha candle. Just wanted to encourage you to make sure you keep enough that you still find joy in your day whether that is your candle or something else. Thanks for making your videos, I love them all!

It’s really just the ritual of lighting a candle I love. So I intend to just light a large jar candle every night which I make myself from soy & cotton wicks. Then there will be barely any waste. In fact the small sticker that holds the wick in place would be the only waste about once a month. Thank You ☺️ 🕯️

Hmmm just because it has a space for a tea light, does that mean you have to put a tea light in it. It could also hold a crystal. Of course, it’s totally up to you. I got rid of my Buddha statue for the same reason, but regret decluttering it.

So true - Like you said, “zero waste” doesn’t exist, so it’s a balancing act to find what has lowest impact vs sustainable for your lifestyle. And thank you for making me think about my choices - things do tend to slip at times!
Something with the Dr Bronners that might help with decision making - air miles. From what I can find, it’s made in USA which is great for Americans, but means it’s being shipped across the world everywhere else. So a locally made Castile soap would have a smaller footprint. We have several bulk food shops fairly close to us where you can fill your own container (or one of their glass ones) which Castile soap, or a pre-made mixture etc. if they state where the product comes from, choosing that could have a huge impact on the hidden environmental cost of an imported product while at the same time supporting local companies.
I haven’t tried chestnuts, only soapnuts, which are from Asia or Nepal so a bit closer to me in Australia. I’ve read Ivy leaves also have the same saponins but some people can be allergic to the sap. I’m not sure if your hard water might impact their cleaning power, also.
you could also try making your own with washing soda crystals - the brand I get for cleaning stubborn laundry is 100% sodium carbonate and doesn’t test on animals. It can also be used in a homemade cleaning spray. And I can buy it from the bulk foods place to reduce packaging.
I really like how your videos always make me think about my own choices and are a reminder to make conscious decisions.

One of the toxic traits that can develope in extreme minimalists is to judge quite harshly not only our own lifestyle, but our fellow minimalist, too. Why is there so much suspicion and involvement in someone else every minute decision? Why even would it be a problem if you bought a few things, that might not have worked for you? Why do we need scrutinize people who are already hyper aware about their consumption, rather than putting the same effort in writing to politicians directing the outrage towards people who really don't give a damn how much they spend, how much waste they create and what message they pass on to their children, family, friends and followers?

@@SagelifeMinimalism it does. I've been watching your videos from the start I think. Your amount of awareness and dedication to your goals is really tangible and very impressive. In any case, minimalism is always a decision we make, a very personal one, and usually is about reducing stress. Being stressed about judgement or obsessing over every small purchase can kind of partly defeat the original goal. I understand it's not easy, especially when You're opening your home and share so much with us. Thank you for being authentic and true to your self and inspiring us to grow and reflect.

Have u looked into Napisan u find it in the baby aisle. I don’t have kids but do use napisan to get rid of tough stains by soaking the item before washing. Comes in a cardboard box so packaging can be recycled x. Though I often wonder what recycling does actually get done. I remember a programme presented by penny poyzer called no waste like home. She has a very short u tube vid about her eco home.

I decided that I didn’t like the waste of tea lights (the metal or plastic dish going into landfills) too, so when mine are gone (had a large stash) I’m only going to use votives, or candlesticks. Candlesticks, I have decided are way less messy than pillar candles.

At Christmas time it's still common to have real "Christmas tree candles" for sale, here. After Christmas, I've found that the genuine beeswax ones get sold off cheaply so I always stock up on those, the perfect size for a tiny pewter candlestick that came from my MIL's house. It burns down to a tiny remnant of wick about 1/4" long. I burn one candle every evening in the darker months. (As I'm not vegan, the beeswax isn't a problem for me.)

We have used soap nuts and I can confirm with the other comment that for dirtier clothes like work clothes or kids play clothes then the nuts weren’t heavy duty enough to work well. At times then I have added about a third of a cup of baking soda (which I always have in my house anyway for baking) and I put just a few drops of essential oil in the baking soda first before adding it to the water for fragrance and brightening. Also putting the clothes out in the sun helps reduce the dirt stains - sometimes it will take them completely out. I also know people who will add Borax, it’s more alkaline than baking soda, and you can mix it in a dish with water and apply as a spot treatment to dirtier clothes. I haven’t looked into borax myself so I’m not sure how ‘healthy’ or harsh it is.

Borax is a very harsh chemical and not very good for wildlife as some will not react completely and will go down your drain. That said, many commercial washing powders etc contain it.

Funny enough I am reading a book about micro organisme and the most beloved spot is out kitchen. So the professor a german dr markus egert says in his written ten rules.
    1. Avoid cross comtamination with fresh product
    2. Wash your hands before cooking
    3. Clean Well your equitment like with above 70 degrees, soap, scrub and the duration of this all. Also replace your equitment
    4. Keep things cool, also your fridge.
    5. Meat should be warmers up for 2 minutes above 70 degrees
    6. Clean your dish wasser of fridge and then he means the sealings the rubber. Don’t ingale the damp of the dishwaser by opening
    7. Same for you fridge, watch out for condensate water
    8. Special anti micro cleaning is not necceray
    9. Clean your sink often also the drain. Treat it more like your toilet
    10. YOPI (young, old, pregnant, immunocpromised be more careful.
I don’t think for hygiëne aspect you can be more toughtful for zero waste.
Some ways are you can put you scrubbies in de dishwasher or wasmachine above 60 degrees. Micro wave with Some soap en Lightly wet.

I have used the soap nuts before for washing clothes. I wouldn’t recommend them for washing work clothes or clothes that are very dirty. I also found that they didn’t remove the smell from my gym clothes or stains from my young daughter’s clothing. Although I loved the idea of them and how very low waste they are, and I didn’t find them as effective as some other eco friendly alternatives i have tried. Finding an eco friendly and zero waste but still effective alternative to washing powder or laundry detergent has actually been the most challenging for me.

I use earth breeze liquidless laundry sheets for washing now and have found them much more effective and leave a fresh but not overbearing scent on your clothes, much nicer than soap nuts.

My issue with zero waste is that it is a manufacturing term and not intended for personal application. It means to use every bit of a product that is usable rather than putting it into the waste stream.
I think how to reduce the amount of waste Americans put into a landfill is to use a rubbish system like I had when I lived in Germany. There are assigned cans for different types of waste and they were different sizes and pick up frequencies. The paper recycling and the compostable trash were picked up most often. Unreliable waste was once a month and smallest can. This makes a person really consider which products to buy.

    • @SagelifeMinimalism
      @SagelifeMinimalism  2 місяці тому +1

We have a recycling system in this region of the uk for practically everything. Everything is picked up fortnightly. The biodegradable stuff is also picked up. But I even don’t like seeing how much stuff has to be recycled through a process. I would like to limit that. I’m concerned about microplastics ruining our planet and health so it’s something I’d like to try limit my part in. I know what you mean about the name zero waste though. It’s a really strange term. Because based as a manufacturing term I would definitely be zero waste 😊 but my recycling bin says different 😂. Thank You 😊 🗑️ 🚮 ♻️ I am glad it is at the very least recycled though. ♻️
