Mike, Ginger - I'm 56 and caught the Delain gig with my 22yo daughter in Manchester in Feb 2020. As Sophie was murdered in Bacup, around 20 miles away, it carried special meaning for the locals - and yes I cried my eyes out at the energy of the crowd singing it with pride. Catch up with the charity named after her to educate teens on stamping out prejudice. www.sophielancasterfoundation.com/
I was bullied for years, having been born Disabled. I now carry my many surgical scars like tattoos. I shave my head (I'm balding anyway), revealing a large scar on my scalp. It was literally a lifesaver. It was to fit a pump to release fluid that was causing brain damage. I REFUSE to be beaten down or apologise for who I am. I am a SURVIVOR. #WeAreTheOthers #WeAreSophieLancaster
This song makes me always emotional, I think most because of the story behind this awesome meaningful song! Love Delain, seen them three times and last year february they totally blew my mind! What a great show, by far the best ever from my fellow Dutchies!!
"Peanut" was the nickname of one of the ten-aged killers. Bloodstock Open Air festival in the U.K. renamed their second stage as "The Sophie Lancaster Stage" in her memory 2009 .
I am pretty sure that Peanut was no a reference to that. The guy holding up the peanut sign is Dutch metal singer / grunter / musician George Oosthoek and I think he might be of Indonesian descent of which a lot came to the Netherlands after WW2 and the Indonesian struggle for independence (Indonesia is a former Dutch colony). The derogatory term in Dutch for people with his background is “pinda” which translates to peanut.
One of my favorite songs from Delain 💞 I think we all have songs that hit us hard. For me, it took me awhile to get the lyrics, I don’t normally hear and understand them at first. But then when I heard the backstory, just remember tears coming to my eyes. I was definitely an outsider, had my fair share of verbal and physical abuse.. but I gave as good as I got even back then. So no tears for my childhood. But kids should definitely be allowed to express themselves, what happened to her was heartbreaking. It’s a good message, and a powerful song. Thank you for the reminder of this one, Basil 😘💞 And thanks to Mike and Ginger for doing the request 🥰
Greetings from Finland! This is for those who might jump straight to the song without hearing your introduction: This song is the title track of Delain’s third album. It is a tribute to the British girl Sophie Lancaster who was brutally murdered in 2007. It is widely believed that she and her boyfriend were attacked because they were dressed like Goths and the assault was an act of hatred towards that culture. The murder attracted tributes and sympathy from Goths (as well as punk, metal and other similar subcultures) all around the world, including this song. As well as paying tribute to Sophie, the song is also a self-empowerment anthem for social outcasts everywhere who are treated badly for the cultures they are a part of.
@@tarmotyyri6733 It was after the We Were Young video when Ginger was talking about Goths that made me think of this one. Thinking back, I believe it was you that put me onto this one. Thank You once again
@@bazkeen The only thing that really matters is that you suggested it to them & they did it so that Sophie is not forgotten & those hearing the song for the 1st time on this channel may also learn something.
love the message off this song. Stop bullying! Kids should have a nice childhood without trauma's from bullying at school or nowadays the internet. Nice fact. The singer and guitarist from the dutch band Within temptation are in this clip too .
many people are recommending "masters of destiny" and i wholeheartedly agree. first few times i heard it i had goosebumps start to finish. another good one is "the hurricane", im not sure what it is about that song but its one of my faves from them
Touching and sad song. My bullyin endet (fatso, I grew up in a farm with mix of cows and farming) and all had was not fat. They learned after certain incidence to leave me alone, and I could also help others...
Peanut? Don't know if that's a swear word in English. In the Netherlands peanut (Dutch = pinda) is a (somewhat mild) swear word for someone from Indonesia.
Interesting. It makes more sense for that to be the reference in the video, even considering by odd coincidence, as I mentioned in my comment elsewhere, one of the boys convicted of the crime also had the nickname of, "Peanut." The boy was apparently autistic.
@@MikeandGinger When you stop at 4:32 in your reaction video, you can see it's an Indonesian person. As I said, it's not a heavy swear word (like the "N-word") but everyone in the Netherlands know that if you say for instance: at #452 resides a peanut, you know they are meaning someone from Indonesia. Btw. most of them can laugh about it, so no harm done 😉.
I was bullied in grade school but grew out of it. Literally. No one dared give me sh#t after I grew to 6ft 3in in the 7th grade. I wore black long before Goth was even heard of in the city I grew up in. Even later on I would walk around at 3am by myself in one of the worst parts of town. Even the police never stopped to see what I was doing out at that time of day. Who would blame them. I was 6ft 4 by then. Steel toed boots, trench coat with one are replaced with chainmail, and the opposite lapel covered in pins and buttons and that lapel had fine chains with little skulls on the ends hanging to mid chest. Walking around I was the definition of bad news but my friends knew I was a nice guy.
I have it rough but I know there are people who have it worse than I do. This nearly turned into an essay, sorry. I am SO JEALOUS of you bigger guys! I have several friends who are above six feet tall and I am mad that I didn't even make it to five foot six inches, I lack half an inch of that! So close and yet so far! Of course I am also a SCRAWNY guy along with being short (I FINALLY got to 100 pounds while in the tenth grade, MAYBE I was above five feet tall when that happened) AND to top it all off, I wear HUGE THICK glasses ever since my tiny skull could fit into the smallest frames available, I was somewhere around a year and a half old when I started wearing glasses. ALWAYS big thick lenses! I am sure you can imagine me getting picked on for my entire school career and even into adulthood. Honestly I only got shoved into a locker just once but I got tripped all the time and of course the bullies said it was my fault for not being able to see where I was going, so who knows what I tripped over? BS, of course. I did learn to do some amount of fighting, but it's a little weird. THE WORST part about my life is that my own big brother has been my lifelong bully. There was no getting away from him when I was a kid, I had to live with him AND go to school with him. Not even joking. Even in our adult lives, he still shows no respect for me at all. He contributed to my failed marriage. There are three kids involved and I am only absolutely certain that one of them is my kid. Thanks, bro. way to be.
@@jamescurfman3284 this is a terrible story, James. I’m so sorry. Both Mike and I have significant struggles with exes and kids. So, we certainly understand the challenges. I do sincerely hope things get better for you ❤️ - G
I'm a bit older so was bullied for dressing like Adam Ant and other New Romantics with the facepait and lipsticks. Also found out I was autistic so this was against me as well. Luckily started doing Karate so people were wary of me after that .
Yes! Masters of Destiny is an epic, awesome, powerful song, as is the music video. It's nothing like the one's you've already seen. Make sure to do the official music video. It's incredible - and it's beautify shot, apparently in Iceland. I think this one will really amaze you.
You guys should listen to Yaras song by the Swedish band Mustasch. It's about a Palestinian girl who was sent to Sweden to live in safety with her uncle and his wife after her school was bombed. She was beaten to death by the uncles wife. It's a really strong song.
I was bullyied in high school cuz I was the one last goth in school and the punks tried to blame me for stealing the security's golf cart and putting it on the railroad tracks and destroyed it among other things
Since you guys react to both pop and metal why not combine them.... Leo Moracchioli (frogleap studios) does amazing metal covers of pop songs (and mainly 80-90's songs). He is also a goofball and all his videos I have seen has been a great laugh. Next time you wanna do a pop song, try checking if he has done a cover of it... he probably has..... also a great way to get Mike more into metal if he is not totally sold yet.
