9 years later, still helping folks. The jack on the belt tensioner saved the day. Just make sure the holes are lined up before wrenching the bolt on. Thanks! 🙏
Man, you're the best! I've tried everything to imitate the sst, even welding on the socket of the belt removal tool the 3/8 smallest extension! Why i couldn't think of the spring myself will be a secret, but hey, my sincere thanks to you!
Excellent coverage of the task, with helpful hints! Saved me a lot of stressing. The camera work is pretty OK for someone trying to do things on a car with one hand. Thank you for taking the time to do -- and post -- this video.
you don't need to drain the radiator. When you pull out the water pump some coolant will drip and that's all. Once the new pump installed just add some coolant in the reservoir and you are good to go
Put a big hose clamp around the spring on the tensioner, and tighten the clamp with a drill until the spring compresses enough to remove the belt. That would be the easy way!!
To be honest I'm a visual learner lol I think you should make the video for it and demonstrate it. I think you would do a great job showing us people how to do it. But I'm gonna try it when I get home and see if it will work lol. Thanks for the reply!
I noticed some seepage of coolant about a week before my belt broke. i pulled the water pump and saw that the housing had been ground down a little bit because the water pump was letting go, after i pulled it out, it would barely turn. the bearings like to go on the ls4 water pumps for some reason. many people have had to replace them and sometimes the serpentine belt actually breaks due to the bearings ceasing up inside the pump. if you see dripping around that area you need to pull it apart
To release the tension on the pulleys you use a pry bar or medium size crow bar and pry the spring down from the top and that relieves the tension. It does take two people to remove and re-install the belt.
Can you do a video of how to remove th springs on an impala ss? I have an 08 Impala SS and we recently needed to remove the coil/springs. However there is an odd bolt that didnt seem to fit any tool we had. HELP PLEASE!!
I learned what I need to know to change the water pump. BUT ....... DON'T UNDER THE TENSIONER! Take a large band clamp and put it around the tensioner spring and just tighten it until the belt is loose enough. Easier, faster, and safer.
Question . Since I’ve pulled outward on the tensioner spring how do I get it back in once lifting it with the jack ? I’ve got it some what lined up with the jack but it still needs to go in towards the bolt hole for it to line up again ? Tia
Watched this video to see if there were any belt tricks and its very helpful. Do you have any tricks to changing the spark plugs in the back of the motor? I have 2006 monte carlo ss but im sure the motor is identical to the impala?
Hey I have a grand prix gxp with the 5.3. I tried your way of putting the belt back on and I broke the spring. The damn thing just snaped. Seemed really easy when u did it. But I think that was the worst way.
hey i love the videos you have they have helped a great deal! but is there any simple way to change the thermostat on this beast! i agree that gm did a great job on making room to fix things.... i really need this help haven't found 1 tutorial vid on how to replace it. I know i know thermostats are supposed to be easy but not on this damn thing! please help!!!! thanks!
do you know how to reprogram the tire pressure monitoring system? my dash board wont give me the option to reprogram it do you have to do it with a special tool?
Our power steering pump making noise and we will put up a vid on how to fix this and if the noise persist after the fix we will replace it. We are shooting this video this weekend and I will upload it ASAP. Just for UR info, changing the power steering pump is a bit different than water pump. There is special way to take the air out of the new pump. Running power steering pump dry (with air bubbles) will damage it in seconds. NEVER run it dry.
Fill your radiator with plain water and start engine and see where it leaks. You will have to trace it! Once U fix the problem drain your radiator and fill coolant. You can safely run your engine like that for at least 10 minutes in “park!”
If your belt broke your car won't start :) It is impossible for me to tell what could be wrong. Only a visual inspection will determine the location of the leak. I guess (its a long shot) but if your car runs, try starting the engine, video film it with your hood open, upload it to youtube and add it as a video response here. If I can't tell maybe other people here will see it.
Great video some mechanic charge me 140 just install the water pump and he did a horrible job because my car started to leak water when I was going to work 3 days later I order the part with out the gasket and he put glue he told me it would hold now calling him but am getting inore
GM wants you to use their coolant! BUT, from the car perspective ANY coolant mixed 50% coolant and 50% water will do the same!!! Our Impala has 579000KM and I don't use Dex antifreeze. When its -50 Celsius I find 50% mix even 60% generic coolant mix with 40% water does just fine and the car starts if plugged in. Ford, Honda and GM all have different color coolant Red GM and the other green..etc all the same
I am a dude and if I was gay I would take you out to a steak dinner. Thank you so much for showing me how to remove the serpentine belt. I've probably rented all the special belt removal tools from NAPA and none of them work. Also since you have the same model, can you show how to change the damper actuators in the cabin cooling system. The fasteners are 5.5 mm, but no matter how I contort my body, I can't get to them. I am almost positive everybody with this model has heard the clicking noise from behind the dash. Thanks.
When you say "connect to hose clamps together and place it around the top and bottom spring mounts" can you explain what you mean by "hose clamps?" This belt thing on the SS is like hell compared to any other car using just a socket wrench, a 5 min job. If you can elaborate or email me a pix of this hose-clamp I would make a video and link it here for others. I messaged you my email
www.handsontools.com/Kent-Moore-EN-47988-Unloader-Belt-Tensioner-EN47988_p_40261.html thats for the tool . but if you take ratchet straps and a block or hose clamps and put them around the spring to depress it will work
That tool in the picture will not fit in the narrow clearance to reach the idle pully! It will work with GrandPrix and Impala LT, LTZ and LS (V6) but will not work with SS-V8! Also the spring is on (almost) maximum depression when bolt is on, so you can't depress it further-enough unless you remove the bolt which will cause it to un-compress
Awesome display, you saved my husband so much time when I found your video. THANK YOU SO MUCH
9 years later, still helping folks. The jack on the belt tensioner saved the day. Just make sure the holes are lined up before wrenching the bolt on.
Thanks! 🙏
Thank you for making this video ! I'm about to Start changing the pump . This looks so much easier than what my book says .
Excellent video. The trick with the jack was brilliant.

DON'T TAKE TENTION BOLT OFF. Just take a pry bar and push top of spring straight down , Much easier

Excellent video of a very challenging task. Thanks for taking the time to film this and upload it.
I will post that video in the Impala repairs playlist on my channel
So i take it no uses the Hose clamp technique to compress the Tensioner spring? Works wonders.
Sir you are a blessing!!! Thank you🙏🏾
I noticed some seepage of coolant about a week before my belt broke. i pulled the water pump and saw that the housing had been ground down a little bit because the water pump was letting go, after i pulled it out, it would barely turn. the bearings like to go on the ls4 water pumps for some reason. many people have had to replace them and sometimes the serpentine belt actually breaks due to the bearings ceasing up inside the pump. if you see dripping around that area you need to pull it apart

Yes sir it does, no hassle either 💯💯💯

man i love this video it helped out alot you are so descriptive in your video
Thanks for the info! About to change my alt. & wondered how I was going to get a tool in that narrow gap to release the tension. There's just no room.
thanks a lot .that video really really HELPED!
but great video though! very helpful and very easy to understand what your trying to do!!!
DO NOT LOOSEN THAT SPRING BOLT!!!!
thanks for the video man , very helpful.
Could you include a pix where you put the crowbar so we can see how its done? thx!
can you please post a video of how to change the spark plugs seems difficult .
This Is also the same as pontiac grand prix gxp 5.3 v8
I use a crowbar and wedge it on the top of the spring to compress it together to put my belt back on
Compress the doing with 2 six inch hose clamps combinded
Would the water pump can be removed by the underside? removing damper?
Watched this video to see if there were any belt tricks and its very helpful. Do you have any tricks to changing the spark plugs in the back of the motor? I have 2006 monte carlo ss but im sure the motor is identical to the impala?
I will put up a new video on changing spark plugs this spring. Its quite easy to change them and yes your Monte Carlo SS has identical engine
Bros got a speedometer that goes to 220?
is the thermostat in the same location cause i want to replace both my reservoir bubbles
how did you take off the cap?
im having trouble taking it off!!

is there any way that you can show/post video on replacing the thermostat? 07 SS model.
Hace you fixed the thermostat at all?

So no one else is wondering how does he have 220mph on the dash?🤔
Detwante Elem canadian/metric dash, so km/h
I have it😏
what are the torque specs for the water pump bolts?
Gotta work on your automobile terminology but good video. Thanks for your help!

Where is the thermostat on these cars? I have an 08 impala ss same engine. Need a new thermostat
Just know the correct antifreeze is Dex coolant not peak
thank you
Ashley P for?
Letting us know about the coolant type...you know this came in handy for me once upon a time Anthony Pierce

I am a girl actually, I make my boyfriend shoot these videos so I can post them here for all to see :)
do u have to use a sealer
yes you do
Make sure that you use sealant on the gasket and make sure that you use Dexcool coolant. It is orange. If you have green coolant, it is not Dexcool.

2008 ss impala 5.3 with forward low delay
Can come do my water pump because I can’t get my water pump out
Removing and puttin in the battery is a bitch on this car. How did you do it

Did you call it the SMALL BLOCK V8? Um its a LS V8... HUGE difference.
It is absolutely a small block v8
