Speaking of a "higher budget" the film actually had a problem with that because the studio withdraw their funding due to the cotroversial subject. So what ended up happening was that almost on a whim they showed the script to George Harrison, and he put up his own money, 3 million, on the basis that he wanted to see the movie.
A couple of references you might not have picked up: the guy who offers to help carry a crucifix and gets stuck with it is a parody of the story of the guy (Simon of Cyrene) who helped Jesus carry his cross; the bit where everyone is shouting "I'm Brian" is a parody of the climax of the film Spartacus (directed by Kubrick).
I'm Scottish living in Australia. I was a boss on a big job Two Cambodian guys used to pretend they couldn't talk perfect English to my boss. It was incredibly funny watching him trying to tell them what to do . They didn't like him,but they liked me,and could talk perfectly normal.

They tried to claim the film was mocking Jesus, but Jesus barely appears in the film so that was obviously silly. It does mock religion in general and followers of religions, though.

I remember that when it was released, there were a lot of protests when it opened because so many religious groups hated that it was making fun of religion. It was still a hit in spite of the protests and objections
Honestly, it just goes to show that laughter is contagious!!! When Shaun was crying with laughter, it made me cry with laughter, at you laughing!!! It's a brilliant film!! Also, Tom's jumper is for sure the best, I want one!!!
The most quoted film of my seminary. Though Mel Brooks' Brief History of the World, Part 1 and Kevin Smith's Dogma also had some very funny bits that my professors and classmates managed to work into lectures and essays. But, man. This particular Monty Python film is just an absolute classic.
Long time Monty Python fan! Holy Grail is great, yet Life of Brian edged it out as my favorite MP movie. Also love Cleese's Fawlty Towers, all of Palin's travel documentaries and, of course, the original series, Monty Python's Flying Circus. Humor, like music, is timeless. Happy you've discovered the joy that is Monty Python!
If you want more great Brit comedy look up Dave Allen at Large He is actually Irish but it still fits. Of course, if you have seen him, you know already.

It’s a movie that benefits from multiple viewings. I’ve watched it at least once a year for over 30 years. It never ceases to amaze me with its insights into human nature. It was banned in my country, Ireland, for many years, for obvious reasons. Satire doesn’t get any better than this.
That's not a jigsaw! That's a mosaic, where you put different-coloured pieces of ceramic together to produce a... Okay, basically, mosaics are jigsaws. Love your reactions, guys!
I ADORE that Gremlins Christmas shirt!! I never understood why Die Hard is a Christmas staple with so many people, but not Gremlins. I would argue that Gremlins is a ton more Christmassy than Die Hard!!
There are christmas trees at the police station in [Rambo] First Blood, but that never gets in the hipster 'its a christmas movie don't you know' coversation.
Monty Python are HUGE and for good reason. Probably the most successful comedy act the World's ever seen and definitely the biggest from this country. Their worldwide success is pretty much unmatched. They all went on to have highly successful careers after Monty Python too. Their influence on comedy has been immense. They inspired generations of comedians and comedy writers and effectively revolutionised British comedy. Especially in tv and film. All highly intelligent guys, some of whom met at Oxford and some at Cambridge. They loved absurdism and surrealism, as well as outright silliness but there was nearly always a thread of real profundity running through their work.
Another famous British comedian, Spike Milligan, had a show called Q, which came before Monty Python's Flying Circus and was basically the same kind of thing, so he deserves credit too, I'd say.
Terry Gilliam's animation segments were always a random kind of occurance in Monty Python tv and movies. The UFO segment makes sense for regular MP fans as the weird animation is part of every MP experience.
Go, I've seen the full movie countless times - and it's such fun seeing that it still hits with a new audience. So many classic moments. I think my favourite moment will always be Michael Palin as Pilate, when the guards started laughing about "Biggus Dickus". There's these two who barely can hold it in - and then he steps behind them... Not the "Incontinentia Buttocks" joke - that's fine too - but what kills me each time is the look on Pilates face before that. When he watches the two guards and suddenly gets this mean "I'll get them!" look. And then, in a completely "harmless" voice goes: "He has a beautiful wife, you know?" I'm still not 100% sure, how to exactly read this scene, in the altogether way Pilate acts it doesn't really make sense, because before and after he's outraged people laugh at his fwiend's name and doesn't get what's supposed to be so funny. But all of a sudden he becomes all cunning and mean about it... Michael Palin's acting is just beautiful. :)
George Harrison mortgaged his house to finance the movie & ended up creating a production company that produced many other British classics in the '80s. He cameos in _Brian_ in one shot.
*Meaning of Life* used to be my favorite Monty Python movie because I thought it had the funniest jokes. Then I thought *Life of Brian* was my favorite because it's a fantastic, insightful piece of satire. Now I think *Holy Grail* is my favorite because it subverts so many movie making and story telling conventions. I've heard *Holy Grail* described as an "anti-movie," and I agree with that assessment. I can't think of another movie which is ultimately a joke on the audience itself.
Because of the joke density, this movie truly gets better and funnier every time you watch it. You guys should revisit it, especially since you can lose your UK citizenship for failing to appreciate Monty Python.
The two similar jokes I’ve always loved in this movie that were skipped here are about the idea of trying to threaten someone more after already sentencing them to death… trying to get the guy about to be stoned to stop saying Jehovah: “You’re only making it worse for yourself.” Making it worse? How could it get any worse? And the joking guy on his way to the crucifixion being told to shut up or he’ll get in trouble: “Oh dear… do you mean I might have to give up being crucified in the afternoon?” 🤣 Holy Grail and Life of Brian do represent two parts of my life: as a teenager, I loved Holy Grail a lot more as it felt a lot more quotable and my friend group were always trying to make each other laugh dropping those references in conversation. Getting older, I find I like Life of Brian more because of the humor being more social commentary while still being silly and quotable.
Was hoping Cinema Rules Shorts would be you two reacting to movies while only wearing shorts. Ah well, the other sounds good as well. Another great reaction here. Keep up the good work. 🙂
I like to picture the Python crew sitting on a beach working on the script and writing themselves into a corner. An argument ensues with how Brian is going to get to the bottom of the tower and Cleese spits out.."How is he going to get off the tower? An alien ship isn't about to swoop in, pick him up and drop him off at the bottom, is it!?!?!?".
Life Of Brian was banned for decades in Aberystwyth and got its first showing in 2012. Weirdly Sue Jones-Davies the outgoing mayor of the town at the time was Judith in the movie. "It seemed a fitting way to end my reign as mayor."
Ah, the greatest movie that shows the truth that started the Christmas season! Also, did you catch the George Harrison cameo? He helped finance the film, along with Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and several other musicians. RIP Graham Chapman and Terry Jones.
Great reaction, did you know during the filming Spike Milligan was on holiday nearby so they put him in it, you can see him in the middle at about 13:10
Your post-film analysis was totally fair; Python IS exhausting, especially on a first viewing. On repeated viewings you can relax into it, and then you notice all kinds of other things. You were TOTALLY right about the cast really shining more in this one. Michael Palin (one of Python's most versatile performers) and Terry Jones (Brian's mother, the hermit) are WAY more featured in this one than "Holy Grail" and it makes all the difference. Palin, especially: Biggus Dikkus, the guy hanging in the dungeon, the guy organizing the crucifixion, "Big Nose", he's one of the prophets sermonizing, he's one of the gang, and I'm probably missing some others. He's just hitting it out of the park in this one. The satire in the movie is so sharp, it just gets better and better, especially the more you know about history and religion. Anyways, been almost two years since I discovered your channel and have been wanting you guys to check this out......THANK YOU!!!! The laughing jag at the stuttering guards was priceless! I've never seen him laugh so hard in ANY reaction!!!! He was CRYING with laughter!
Oh FFS, it is NOT exhausting, he just didn't like a lot of the scenes. I never feel even remotely exhausted by MP humor, I love it, even the relatively weaker, more drawn-out scenes. And that was true on my first viewings of all their productions, as well as all my subsequent viewings over the the last half century.
@@Cosmo-Kramer Yeah, I've been watching them also for a half-century, spare me the blather. Everyone has a different reaction. Take your thumb out of your mouth, not everyone thinks the same as you. Yeah, apparently the guards in the Biggus Dickus scene were told they wouldn't be paid if they laughed, actually making it harder to keep a straight face 🤣
Yeah defiantly didn't happen. The guards were played by respected professional actors not extras and between them they played 12 different roles in the film no one was threatened with not being paid for laughing in this one scene.
Sterling work as always chaps, Monty Python is what happens when 5 classically educated Brits are given free reign to satirise the absurdity of human nature. Times change, humans don't.
The best part wasn’t just Shaun laughing. It was him trying multiple times to reel it back in and not being able to get it under control. My face hurts from laughing with him 😂
I think the alien bit was made as a criticism of 'deus ex machina', where a hero (or deity) comes out of nowhere to save the day; common in ancient and some modern- plays/films, etc....
I feel like you guys would really enjoy Flight of the Concords (the series), if you haven't seen it the first season is pretty hilarious. Also, fairly sure Holy Grail is much more well known than Life of Brian (especially amongst the yanks). FWIW The Meaning of Life is also worth a watch.
The alien scene is a jab at the concept of Deus Ex Machina (God in the machine). Deus ex machina was extensively used in Greek litterature, whenever a hero was in mortal danger but there was more story to tell with him, he would be saved by a god appearing and taking him away from danger. Today, it's used for lazy writting, for example the heroes are in a remote place surrounded by enemies and you don't know how to continue the story so you have the rescue arriving in the nick of time, exactly at the very place. The monthy python crew pushed the concept to absurd limits with aliens saving Brian from a certain death. What makes the scene so hilarious is how you absolutely do not expect it and the absurdity of it is just so funny. These guys were truly comedic geniuses. Needless to say (about the movie) that it did ruffle some feathers among some christian institutions, especially the singing on the cross at the end. Python got a lot of heat but John Cleese famously went on TV to defend the movie saying that they weren't making fun of jesus but doing a criticism of fanatism in organised religions. A fantastic christmas movie that people should react to is the anime Tokyo Godfathers by Satoshi Kon (Perfect blue, Paprika) Do watch it, it's really great.
John Cleese and Michael Palin debated on TV with the leading UK Bishops from the C of E and Catholic church. This debate was parodied to great effect by Not the Nine O'Clock News, with a Christian film blaspheming against "The Life of Monty Python".
One of the best reactions to “Life of Brian” I’ve seen. Probably because most of the other reactions I’ve seen have been done by Australians and Americans. And, let’s be honest, they don’t seem to get this kind of humour. Well, the majority of them, at least. Saw this in a movie theatre in 1979. F*cking brilliant! Glad you enjoyed it as well.
Saw this as a teen, many years ago, after having watched, and rewatched, Holy Grail, and didn't appreciate it. Watched again in my 20's, and it's easily now my favourite. Brilliant nuanced satire.
That was great guys great reaction Shaun laughing was brilliant & made me laugh so much! Monty Python are brilliant and stands the test of time! John Cleese in Fawlty Towers is still my fav still watch it regularly great thanks guys 👍
This is a genius film. So many iconic lines. Funding has been withdrawn for this film, so George Harrison stepped in & backed it. BBC and ITV would not show it at Xmas in case it offended Christians! “He’s not the Messiah, he’s a very naughty boy!” 😅
That's why when the house is full of people and Reg introduced Brian to someone and said he's funding our venture, that actually is George Harrison having a cameo, the man who helped fund the film.
I'm an American, and while i've always heard of Monty Python I never saw any of the movies, really don't know anything about them. After watching your guys reaction I think I will dive into that universe. I think M.P. was much bigger in the U.K. than the U.S.A. but im now officially curious. I'll probaly watch them in the order they were realeased. I love movies that make fun of religion, my favorie bieng Dogma. Keep up the good work! Love the Gremlins sweater😊
The biggest irony in this movie is that, while John Cleese has gone full reactionary these days, in the movie they actually respect the character of Loretta, they treat her exactly the way she asked without any kind of fuss.
You guys would love Yellowbeard. Graham Chapman (Brian ; King Arthur) stars as Yellowbeard the pirate. It feature some of the other Pythons as well as some Mel Brooks regulars (Madeline Kahn; Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman) and also Cheech and Chong.
The UFO is a parody of how Greek tragedy plays would resolve a moral dilemma in a script: They would toss a fake cow 🐄 onto the set. As in, anything that couldn't be explained; insert Devine intervention. On your critism on comedic timing. You need to watch the film several times. It's not written for your comprehension level, the Python team are all Cambridge University educated. Graham Chapman is an MD. So, if you're not at that level, watch it again and again.
Parodying beliefs that proclaim to love your neighbor does not seem very difficult. Perhaps it will take us a little longer to see a life of a man born in Mecca around the sixth century...

My face hurts from laughing with him 😂
This is in my top 3 films ever. Utter brilliance!
I think the alien bit was made as a criticism of 'deus ex machina', where a hero (or deity) comes out of nowhere to save the day; common in ancient and some modern- plays/films, etc....
10:16 It's Monty Python, you don't come to terms with anything, you just watch and enjoy.
Just like anything from Mel Brooks.
The establishment tried to ban this movie under blasphemy laws... John Cleese's defence was, "It's not blasphemous, it's heretical." 😂
monty python films are genius and never get old.
A fantastic christmas movie that people should react to is the anime Tokyo Godfathers by Satoshi Kon (Perfect blue, Paprika)
Do watch it, it's really great.
Glad you enjoyed it as well.
... from Australia ... you must be joking ! ... it was an enormous hit here.
Saw this as a teen, many years ago, after having watched, and rewatched, Holy Grail, and didn't appreciate it. Watched again in my 20's, and it's easily now my favourite. Brilliant nuanced satire.
Beatle George Harrison put up the majority of the budget for the Life of Brian.
9:22 gets me everytime!!!! LMFAO
9:20 literally same thought process 😂😂😂😂😂
That was great guys great reaction Shaun laughing was brilliant & made me laugh so much! Monty Python are brilliant and stands the test of time! John Cleese in Fawlty Towers is still my fav still watch it regularly great thanks guys 👍
this movie has a bigger budget also because George Harrison financed it (sadly it seems that his little cameo goes unnoticed)
Like The Grail, this film is made to re-watch many times so if the laughs can make you miss bits you'll catch them later.
Another great video from a great film! Tom, where did you get the Gremlins jumper? Love it 😍
To everyone reading this I hope you take all life has to offer Merry Christmas
Even the bad stuff?
@@biddleeewho4181 if that's what you get from the message I'm sorry but life doesn't offer us bad stuff key word offer
First time I can remember seeing Shaun break! Awesome
I’ve seen this film countless times over the years, and I still laugh hysterically!
The Leper is hopping around because his foot had fallen off, then Jesus cured him. He just got used to hopping. LOL
I fecking love this film!!
If you want to see another film saved by George Harrison you could try the greatest British gangster film of all time, _The Long Good Friday_
Time Bandits is faaaar better than Yellowbeard, a notorious flop.
The alien bit was so random ha ha I loved it
That Movie is still so good and very funny! I first saw it in 1996 on TV here in Germany! I got that Classic on Blu Ray in my Collection!
Dare you guys to watch terrifier 1&2
Love the Gremlins sweater
The UFO is a parody of how Greek tragedy plays would resolve a moral dilemma in a script: They would toss a fake cow 🐄 onto the set. As in, anything that couldn't be explained; insert Devine intervention. On your critism on comedic timing. You need to watch the film several times. It's not written for your comprehension level, the Python team are all Cambridge University educated. Graham Chapman is an MD. So, if you're not at that level, watch it again and again.
I'm pretty sure that wasn't the first time you've argued the pronunciation of 'scone' is truly MP-worthy argument.
The Bucket scene from Meaning of Life is epic
The next Monty python movie you shoud watch is: a fish called Wanda! It is the best one IMO.
I want Toms Christmas sweater.
Parodying beliefs that proclaim to love your neighbor does not seem very difficult. Perhaps it will take us a little longer to see a life of a man born in Mecca around the sixth century...
