  • The US federal government's public debt has skyrocketed at a breakneck pace to an unprecedented $35 trillion, smashing the record set just months ago and sending fresh worries to its people and the global market. It means each US citizen owes $104,497.
The United States has the largest external debt in the world and its national debt has nearly tripled since 2009. The $35 trillion US debt is higher than its GDP of $26.97 trillion, resulting in a debt-to-GDP ratio of 130%. A higher debt-to-GDP ratio can make it harder for the government to repay its debt.
Observers said that the rapid increase in US debt was caused by recent events triggering large spikes in debt including the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars, the 2008 Great Recession, and the spending spree of the US government following the COVID-19 pandemic.
Will US be able to overcome from this skyrocketing debt? Is US economy going to collapse? What consequenses will US and world face?
