*@Official Gary Numan* When this song was released in 1979, I was an 8-year-old boy who, thanks to everyone from Marvin Gaye, to the Supremes, and George McCrae, through to the Bee Gees, I was a boogie child of that Funk, Motown, & Disco Age. (I still am) In 1979 Funk & Disco were quickly being eclipsed by New Wave & Synthpop, though
Point is my knowledge of New Wave & of all-electronic Synthpop is "a smattering of everything & a knowledge of nothing." So I don't know who should get credit for originating all-electronic Synthpop, where even the percussion is also all-electronic, too. The earliest I knew of were Jean-Michel Jarre _(Oxygene Part IV)_ & Vangelis. _(Albedo 0.39, Blade Runner_ soundtrack) Their music is all-electronic alright, but it's purely instrumental. Since there's no lyrics or vocals of any kind, it doesn't qualify as Synthpop, nor as New Wave in that sense, in my opinion
You may never read this, but whatever the case, Sir, you are grossly underrated for pioneering all-electronic Synthpop, of the variety having *lyrics.* There's everyone from Boggles, to the Cars, Blondie, the Fixx, & so on. And the only other person performing such a masterful job of harmonizing traditional orchestral instruments (violin, viola, cello) with electronic instruments if Jeff Lynn & E.L.O.
Upon discovery of your official UA-cam channel tonight, this may be my only chance of ever getting a message of appreciation through to you, Gary. I can't thank you enough for your unrecognized & underappreciated influence upon all-electronic music. I'm a very conventional musician, in the Motown, Funk, & Disco field. At present I employ very little of electronic instruments in my music. Nonetheless, the impact & influence that _Cars_ & that _Complex_ have on me cannot be overstated. Your music has widened my rhythmic vocabulary; enriching it & my creative originality
What a masterpiece of harmonizing traditional orchestral instruments with synthesizers & with electronic percussion _Complex_ is! ! It is just as futuristic in 2020 as it was 41 years ago in 1979. Strangely enough there's nothing nearly as futuristic as your music playing on the radio, even now... Thank You so much, Gary. Best of Success to you! !

@@gerardmurphy6263 Youre right! If anything David Bowie provided a role model for Gary to aspire to. Bowie's _Fame_ is the earliest example of digital sampling & "bending" (bending the pitch of real audio ELECTRONICALLY) that I know of. Ill have to research it to be sure, but I believe thats the historic first of that technological advance
It may interest you to know that German-born & lifetime NYC resident Gershon Kingsley was one of the very first people to ever buy a Moog synthesizer, when the very first of those electronic music instruments were ever sold. He is credited with establishing both the Electronic Music catagory, & the Synth-pop style... The grandfather of all-electronic commercial songs (with the exception of his adding acoustic drums) is his 1969 hit _Popcorn._ For the decades that Ive been fascinated by his _Music to Moog By_ album, I never knew! 😳😳

I get a magnificent soaring feeling from this song… and the entire album broke barriers!! I’ll never forget the first time Gary Numan played live in SF… even the stage setting was unique!! Gary Numan and DEVO were the forefront of electronically driven New Wave… the last really timeless genre of enjoyable music!! Folk, Pop, Soul, Rock, Funk, Punk, Rap, Ska, Metal, Grunge, Techno, and Hip Hop, couldn’t last without evolving… And now, this original format of New Wave is finding lots of new young protégés… they’re just 100% Digital!!! (IMO… The best thing about New Wave is it completely erased and buried Disco!!!)

For a long time (maybe still) this was the chart single with the longest ever musical lead-in before the vocals start (1 minute 28 seconds - nearly half way through the song). I think this was Gary's 3rd (?) chart single, and a brave slower, melancholy choice after his previous Are 'Friends' Electric? and Cars, given that there are arguably more obvious candidates for singles on The Pleasure Principle. A beautiful song.

@@SuperDonnaMO Yes, thanks for the comment. I love all kinds of music and used to focus on the charts as you had a bit of everything but it was my sister that made me love Gary Numan as from the start she was hooked and as a kid I would always hear his albums and stuff. I'm from a very musical household. There's not much I don't like when it comes to music but it's an age thing to as I don't care for a lot of todays stuff but we like what we like. All the best!.

      Haha!
UA-cam has stitched me up here. I was actually watching a Numan tribute band covering this song and commenting on that. I must have pressed 'send' on the message as UA-cam then went straight into the original version, my reply then appearing on the wrong video. 😂
I only noticed that this can happen the other night as a comment of mine again ended up on the video following the one I was actually commenting on. Anyway, thanks for highlighting this for me. I've been a Numan fan from '79 but my comment on this makes me look a bit clueless. 😊

@ That’s funny! Yeah, I was like, “Doesn’t this guy know *anything* about Gary Numan?”😂. What you just did, that happened to me before too. LOL. I have no idea how I got my comments confused with one another but it happened! I’ve been a fan since ‘79 too, I guess. Even though I was only 10 years old.😅 I remember first seeing Gary Numan on SNL performing “Cars” and “Praying To The Aliens”. And I instantly was in love! It only took me almost 20 years to finally go see him live!🤦🏻‍♀️😄

I was only 17 when I saw Tubeway Army on Top of the Pops doing Are 'Friends' Electric? My life changed in an instant. I was lucky enough to then see him play live in the Touring Principle Tour, September '79 in Liverpool. I saw him on the Teletour '80 and at Wembley Arena '81. They were amazing times. I'm glad you got to see him eventually too.
I met him in 1980 when he signed my 12" copy of Down in the Park. I've still got it.
Anyway, I'll have to be more vigilant when posting comments now, so they appear on the correct video. 🙃 The video I was actually watching was a tribute band called Tubeway Days. They cover the first three albums mostly and are amazing. I went to see them in Liverpool earlier this year and it was a stunning show both in sound and visuals.
      All the best to you.

Before TubeWay Army there was nothing. In fairness there ain't been much since that can or will ever compare. These songs you played over in your head as you drifted through the smog filled cities of the early 80s. There were no MP3s or such like. You made time for music you gave it time and with that came an appreciation of it. Today's disposable music fits this time and place. I'd personally go back to those smoggy streets haunted by the music in my head.

By that time I was already a great fan of Gary, after Down in the Park, Cars, Are friends electric etc...That time the Music scene was so vibrant and varied. I used to listen from New wave, Post punk to Synth Pop/Rock...Music really shaped me as a person and made me ready to face World, after I passed out of A Grade. Thank you Gary for being there with your incredible Music during the crucial part of my youth..🙏👍😊

This is truly what you could call 'art music with art'.
The lyrics to this is so typical Sparks, the humorous twisted sentences, the rhythm, and of course, the trademark No. 1, Russell's voice.
"Contrapuntal music is the music that your parents fear" 😂😂, I believe that! History will always repeat itself, parents thinking their offsprings are out of their minds.
This slightly odd (to others than fans) piece of music is certainly one of my 100 favorite list 💖 (No specific order, impossible to choose!)
