Planting material of saffron can be directly bought from the Agriculture university of Jammu and Kashmir named SKUAST, Kashmir.
It is noteworthy that the university has developed the first saffron/kesar variety named Shalimar Saffron-1 which can be taken for high density planting for profit maximisation.

Being the most expensive spice in the world it is nicknamed as ‘Red Gold’. Saffron in India mainly cultivated in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. However, it can grow in almost anywhere in the world.
Optimal climate for growing saffron is warm, sub-tropical climate. Saffron grows well at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level. It needs a photoperiod of 12 hours. In other words, it needs 12 hours of sunlight for good growth.
For saffron cultivation, we need an explicit climatological summer and winter with temperatures ranging from no more than 40 degree Celsius in summer to about -15 degree Celsius or -20 degree Celsius in winter.
That’s why saffron can be cultivated in dry, moderate and continental climate types but not in tropical or polar climate types.
If in any area these temperatures are not naturally found, one can take the cultivation under controlled environmental conditions in a Poly house.
Due to the fact that the Crocus sativus is a heat-tolerant bulbous plant, dry and hot summers will be no problem at all. However, during extreme winter temperatures, it could be possible that the leaves will dry-freeze, causing that the corms will develop less and therefore will bloom less and give less saffron.
During dry climatological circumstances in spring time, irrigation is essential. During this period, regular rainfall is good for the development of the corms, as it means higher yield of flowers and cormlets (daughter corms).
