    PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING:
    If you have been following my previous videos then you will know
    that I have a huge amount of love for the people of Bangladesh.
    Like I mentioned in the video, this is the first negative encounter
    that I have had in Bangladesh and I am sure that it is a one off instance.
    I know that there are good and bad people in every country but like
    I said in the video, I feel very strongly to fight against any form of
    discrimination and I will not stand for it. I have to share and promote
    acceptance of every kind of person, no matter religion, gender, race,
    age, sexual preference or anything else. This is one of the main reasons
    for this UA-cam channel. Thank you for your time and understanding.
    See you tomorrow! 💗🇧🇩✌😀

      Indigo Traveller stereotype humans,
      There can be a another reason they have done this maybe they would charge you more but seeing you with Bengali they can't do that.
      That would be a valid reason ❤

  • @Invincible_joe
    @Invincible_joe 6 років тому +409

    let me give u third option why they did this. They dont hate their own people and neither they thought you're a gay couple. Reason is when u entered they could charge u more than the room's original price but the moment they realised that u have a localite with you and he would negotiate for you bringing the price that they would charge to a foreigner to a level of what a local guy would pay, that idea kinda dropped a bomb on them.

      Exactly what i thought first time round.. to charge you a lot of money.
      Second.. there is a policy like in many muslim country.. non married couples. So they will give you 2 rooms or 1 room with 2 beds..
      Even then. Sorry you had to face that.

      I absolutely agree with this comment. I also witnessed a behavior like this a few days back when i went for a trip to cox's bazar and this foreigner guy was trying to book a rickshaw to go to his hotel and the rickshaw puller was asking for ridiculous fare.so when i went up to the guy for negotiation he completely rejected to take him anywhere so we had to find another rickshaw for that poor person. Actually its just because of some narrow minded people that our country has such bad rep.

    • @shahrearkabir8361
      @shahrearkabir8361 6 років тому +26

      Cox's bazar is one of the very few places in Bangladesh where hotel people and rickshaw/cng drivers try to rip off foreigners. They think that they can take advantage because you don't know the language.

    hey I'm Bengali,
    really felt bad that you had to face something unpleasant like this...
    I'm not exactly sure about the reason why those hotel people did that but i want to let you know that me being a Bengali, knowing the people of Bengali, I'm 100% sure that the reason to turn you off wasn't that they were thinking you guys are Gay couple...
    they weren't thinking that you guys are gay... it must have been something else, really
    possibly, they were disappointed, they thought they had a big fish in the net... they never have fixed prices, you can always bargain to reduce the price, even if that's a buck...with you being a lone travelling, they were sure to charge you high ( really really high, in fact they would charge you in USD). Fortunately you had robin with you, they couldn't do as they wanted to...

    • @gman6119
      @gman6119 6 років тому +7

      The FreakOfNature This is actually what he had faced. Tourists are like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for these hotel keepers. They never have a fixed price as they always fluctuate their prices based on the appearance of the customers entering. Robin being there just meant that they wouldn't be able to charge them as much as they wanted to which would've been very very high. Hence they didn't serve him necause of Robin being there. Bangladesh has its best sides and it has sides like these as well unfortunately but it's my country nonetheless so i love it to the fullest of extent. To the indigo traveler , I'm sorry you had to face this and I hope you had a great stay in Bangladesh. Hope you return oneday 😊

      I live in New York City, I had a similar experience in Faridabad, India. I booked myself in a hotel, when I got there, they refused to rent me a room, saying their hotel did not meet international standards, the pictures of the rooms were fine to me, I felt the Homophobia, in the air, “the receptionist who refused to rent me the room was obviously gay”, I felt disgusted and went to another hotel, it is awful to be discriminated like this overseas.

    The Bengali viewers all seem to agree this was all about money. It just seems strange to us that they would treat their own people that way. It goes to show it doesn't matter where you go in the world, there's always prejudice (class, color etc). That's why your job is so important Nick. The world needs to know there are good and bad people everywhere. Keep sharing the LOVE ❤

    • @anikkhan4887
      @anikkhan4887 6 років тому +11

      they are not treating ppl differently for racists reason, they dont think locals are low lives either, they are just disappointed because they cant take more money from the foreigner now, which is a really disgusting habit too, and I understand why westerners are getting confused about it and thinking its related to racism or homophobia. Homophobia is illegal here just like india china and many asian coutries, but I can assure you, it wasnt about that, it was simply about money, they want to discourage foreigners to come with locals, they want them to come alone so they can charge more.
      But it wouldnt have happened if he had gone to a good hotel.

    • @emz0288

    It has nothing to do with race or sexuality. Some hotels in cox's bazar may try to earn more money from the foreigners by charging higher than the regular price. Since you were with a Bangladeshi guy they realised they can't fool you that. Once you're booked in a hotel no one bothers what you do in the room. You can buy anyone with money here! LoL

    Hey, Nick...just want to stay how good your videos are, so interesting, and eye opening in all aspects. You are very courageous even to venture into the places you have, and as I will definitely never venture into those parts of the world that you have so bravely taken the time to visit, your videos give a very good idea of what I've chosen not to experience personally. Hats off to you for continuing this channel. Stay safe, watch for crime, and keep them coming. I'm an avid follower now. And by the way, I spent 23 years in NZ living in Auckland and Wellington, so your accent is very familiar to me. I now live happily in the prairies of Canada. We are avid travellers to most of Europe, Australia and New Zealand, Alaska and the Caribbean areas, taking cruises mostly. With the COVID, of course, things have gone on hold for about 2 years. I'm 74 now and once again, want to thank you for all the good work you are doing to enlighten us on how some of world exists. My wife and I say every day how blessed we are that we live where we do. It's so interesting, though, that despite the difficulties you have encountered, people there are so friendly and seem to be coping somehow. Once again, Nick, stay safe, keep those great videos coming, as it is the only way I'll ever appreciate how there is so much suffering in our world today. I'm afraid the population is getting out of control in the areas you are visiting. Hopefully, humanity will sort it all out one day. Cheers!!!!

    One more thing I forgot to mention. I think the hotel owners are worried seeing a Bangladeshi fellow with you as they deem he (Robin) will ask for the percentage of his share from the rental you would pay. This is very common and happed lot of times specially if the guide looks little poor or paid guide. The hotels may be just did not want to pay any share to Robin.

I am just thinking may be the hotel where Nick finally stayed may be via an agent as well i.e. not really Robin’s friend. But again, may be I’ve been bit negative on the issue that we never faced even with foreigners.

    Fast of all I apologies for the situations u have faced. But I find some circumstances for that u faced such problems.
    1. Why u choose NON-AC bus instead of AC bus?? In our country we have the most technological & more luxury busses which r drives by the most experience drivers. u will not find any harassment with their driving. Chittagong-Cox's bazar fare will be max. $8-$9. when u back I recommend u to travel with AC bus. 😊😊
    2.In our country we r now facing some security problem & also have those Rohingya Refugee problems. Moreover there r some restrictions in cox's bazar for foreigners because every year more than 20000-30000 foreigners visit cox's bazar. Every hotels r not capable of giving security to the foreigners. I think u & ur frnds were finding some low category hotels that's why they refused. But their r some 4 & 5 star hotels with low cost in cox's bazar. They don't ever harass with u at all.
    Again I feel sorry for those situation.
    Thanks for visiting Bangladesh!!!

      Amisha Khatri this is not real Bangladesh. The problems we r facing for political issues r making these type of problems. He is not the only tourist in cox's bazar. I mentioned the approximate amount of tourist who visit in cox's every year but they didn't face any these type of problems.

    This happened to me (and other gay couples) in the Scottish highlands. My partner and I got rejected from staying in about four consecutive b&b's. On one occasion, there was a vacancy displayed on the sign outside, so I waited in the car while my partner went in to book it. The owner looked through the back window at me first, then told my partner there were no vacancies. This happens a lot.

    I think both of the reasons that you assumed are wrong. Profit can be a raeson. If it is not profit, then this might be a security issue. If Robin were a bad guy and had a bad intention, then anything happens bad to you the hotel authority had to take the responsibity. That's why I think they didn't want to take the risk. Thanks by the way for representing the real Bangladesh. I'm seeing a tourist living the local people's life for the 1st time. Really good to see that. If you have enough time, please don't miss Rangamati, Khaghrachari, Bandarban and Sylhet. These places are blessed with natural beauties. Keep doing the good work 😊

They should serve anyone regardless of race, class etc. But, I think they just wanted to take advantage from you as you are a foreigner...they could just profit more from you which is of course unfair... and when they found that you have Robin (the local guy) with you, it just disappointed them and didn't want to rent out the rooms to you guys ... I really wish you could enjoy the tour in Bangladesh with all means of convenience ... best wishes for you

    The far left political ideals in the West have not, yet, been forced on the Bangladeshis so you are the one discriminating against them, expecting them to have same ideals as you. If you are going to travel around the world you need to accept people the way they are and not want or expect them to be just like you.
    So, sorry to say, but you sound a bit ridiculous complaining about their culture in their country. If you don't like it stay home.

      pduffy4 it was not not about homosexuality or racism anything. the hotel manager wanted to charge extra from foreigners. but couldn't do that in front of a local so they rejected.
      about homosexuality, this term is a bit outlandish for us. just like people in the west would react to man married to two or three wives which is normal in Arab countries.

    • @Nouvellecosse

      Refusing to serve someone because of what you assume are their personal characteristics is discrimination. Being upset that you were discriminated against is not. The first case is treating someone poorly due to something that's none of your business. The second case is not appreciating being treated poorly which obviously is not discrimination. Or at least I assumed it would be obvious...

    It's too bad people of the world can't see the beauty in people. I'm white and 63 years old. My father was in the United States Air Force and my family had the best times traveling around the world. When growing up on military bases the first 18 years of my life, the most racist people I had to deal with, were American blacks. The indigenous people in the countries we lived in were very good to us. We lived in Japan for 5 years, on to Texas for 4 years, Germany was next for 4 years and the final destination was California. Don't let a few people with prejudices ruin your travels. You will not change the ignorance of some people. I love your videos .

    INDIGO TRAVELLER : NO NICK, YOU'VE GOT IT ALL WRONG! ABSOLUTELY WRONG!
    Whatever their reason was for denying you a room, it definitely wasn't because of any assumption on their part that you two were gay couple. And it was clear from your own description that they did not refuse you because you are a white guy. So, it wasn't racism either. It doesn't work that way here. I am more than 1000% sure that your assumption of their assumption is a perfect example of an utter cross-cultural misunderstanding. There must have been some other reason and you definitely missed the clues. I am Bangladeshi, in fact I went to school in that part of the country and lived there for 3 years (probably before you were even born) - and also have been travelling inside this country for last 35 years. Alone and with friends or family, etc. In fact my very first visit to Cox's Bazar was with a male friend of mine and we stayed in the same room. It was 1984. I've been there many times since. Such things never happened to me in 35 years, nobody even hinted anything like this, nor did I hear of anything similar happening to others. When two travelers/tourists/visitors of same sex share the same room - people here don't automatically assume that they are gay. Perhaps it happens in your or in some western countries, but not here. Bottom line is, there must have been some other reason for their behavior which you did not understand. But one thing's for sure, there can be many more reason than the two you assume and list, moreover none of the two you list seem even plausible here! You uttered a lot of harsh words about Bangladesh, based on your evidently totally uninformed, baseless, clueless, unreasonable, automatic knee-jerk assumptions. In fact, this baseless automatic knee-jerk assumption of yours, dare I say it, reeks of racism, ethnocentrism and cultural chauvinism itself! A "typical white guy behavior"? (I am quoting you here actually, replacing only the keyword. Remember the Goa video? ) Wouldn't you agree? Cheers! :))

    When they saw you they thought they can rip you off but when then saw my Bangladeshi brother they felt that he would try to make a hard bargain as he is Bangladeshi. There are places in Bangladesh where there are people who try to rip off foreigners because they don’t haggle for price but obviously Bangladeshis do. Also my Bangladeshi brother don’t look rich that could also be a factor. It’s not racism, discrimination is everywhere and it was created by people who want to get advantage over people. But discrimination is no less evil and heinous than racism!

    Hi,
    I'm really sorry to hear what happened to you in cox-bazar.
    What i think the problem was that about the hotel was that they thought you are a foreigner and they can charge you more money for your stay as its a tourist spot but when you brought your bangladeshi friend with you they won't be able to do that coz he will catch it and say something.
    Again I'm sorry on behalf of the bangladeshi people.
