- Over two years into war, Russian forces continue almost daily attacks on Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv. This week, Kharkiv’s TV tower was destroyed, while power outages remain frequent and living conditions difficult for the city’s residents. Meanwhile, in a claim disputed by Kyiv, another village in the Donetsk region has reportedly been captured by the Russian forces. Ammunition shortages have made defense challenging for Ukrainian troops. But Kyiv is not standing idle. Ukraine steps up its attacks on Russian refineries and other industrial targets fueling the enemy’s war effort.
In a sigh of relief and major morale booster, the United States passed a $61 billion military aid and assistance package for Ukraine, held up in Congress for the past six months. While weapons are essential, so is manpower. Kyiv passed a mobilization bill and announced the suspension of consular services for Ukrainian men of conscription age residing abroad.
In this edition of Ukraine this Week, Sgt. Sarah Ashton-Cirillo describes the current situation in the Chasiv Yar area and confirms reports that Ukrainian forces are pushing back against the Russians there. FPV drones swarm the embattled city, but anti-EW devices and jammers allow Ukrainian forces to maneuver and repel attacks.
Mikhail Alexseev, Professor at San Diego State University, gives his analysis of the U.S. support package for Ukraine. The increased use of Russian glide bombs poses a significant threat, which requires more advanced solutions, such as the expedited transfer of F-16s and modern air defense systems.
Former Polish Ambassador to Ukraine Bartosz Cichocki weighs the effectiveness of Kyiv’s move to coax military-aged Ukrainian men staying abroad back to their homeland, which sends an antagonistic message to its own nationals and European partners. Incentives could be a better method to bring those eligible for mobilization home.

What's wrong with UA-cam? Graphic pictures should absolutely be allowed to be shown (with a warning caption). That would generate more disgust for what the Russians are doing in Ukraine. It seems that UA-cam with their stupid policy is shielding Russia from negative consequences, as a graphic picture really drives home the point of Russian inhumanity and brutality.

I am Ukrainian. It was the United States that intervened in the internal affairs of Ukraine and brought the neo-Nazi regime to power in 2014, which unleashed a war on the border with Russia. I'm for Russia!
When the United States entered WW2 after Dec 7, 1941, there were so many volunteers that by the end of 1942 no longer could one volunteer unless you were under age 18 or older than 37. They used the draft after that because then they could call people up as needed. To me, they will always be the Greatest Generation.

Yes sir my dad fought in ww11 and I followed him up in combat in Vietnam you bet citizens should take up arms to protect their country I’m still a little butt hurt about the draft dodgers that fled

We shouldn't have needed Russia's unprovoked invasion, its vicious onslaught of Ukraine, to realize the dangerous depravity of Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.
His massive abuses of power in Russia and abroad, over 20 years never triggered widespread outrage and international resolve until now.
Even so, aid to Ukraine has been slow in coming. More weapons, sooner, would have made a big difference, I think.

Absolutely correct to use the army in so many ways, just to keep civilians alive, is a very good way of keeping civilians safe. The experience would easily help them adapt to the war scenario.

Forcing people to fight means that a country is not a democracy? Well, in that case Finland is not a democratic country. IMO, citizenship is not just about rights but also about obligations, duties.
I agree, I don't think it's as black and white as that (e.g. in Australia, during Vietnam, we had the draft, but your name was called up via birthdays, so not everyone went; we also have compulsory voting and it's a huge success, making our politics less polarised). Whilst flat-out conscription might not be the best idea (having soldiers who don't want to fight is less than ideal) there is a middle ground: just make it less desirable to be non-uniformed, like PR campaigns around supporting soldiers etc. I think the other issue is corruption, it's too easy to bribe your way out of service.
@@skullsaintdead I know that in this case my opion is pretty black - thanks to my country's way to deal with the issue (naturally, a small country has no other options). Conscription is compulsory for men (either military or non-military, most of men prefer military), voluntary for women, and those who have not been in the army, there are compulsory tasks during the war time. So, adults at certain age won't leave the country. Now I have been surprised to see how some military age Ukrainian men have left Ukraine instead of serving their country. IMO, the West has been too slow with its aid but also Ukrainians should have been more active. Those who have stayed in Ukraine and do their duty as citizens are the true heroes, the rest... My grandfather always said that first you have to help yourself, and only after that expect help from others.

@@osk9013 Yeah that's fair enough & a pretty responsible policy if you ask me (i.e. for smaller countries that border aggressive neighbours to have conscription). I, too, was shocked to see the numbers of Ukrainian men leaving the country, I can understand women & kids but I'd of thought the blokes would be more timid about being so openly averse to defense of their home. I wonder sometimes if we've become too complacent & soft in our peacetime years, thinking that democracy is a right, when its really a privilege - one that has been & will always continue to be hard fought. I'm a 32 y.old woman & if my country was invaded, I'd fight, prob not on the frontlines because i'm not very strong but still would want to contribute (do note: this is if I could; im housebound & part bedbound, from severe chronic abdominal pain for 3+ years, & have chronic fatigue & insomnia too). Also, thank you Finland for the sacrifices your country has made to democracy at home & in Europe.

🇺🇲❤️🇺🇦 This is exactly what happened during Vietnam some went to Canada and other countries But I believe they have to fight In the US you registered at 18 and if you don't show up they come get you
US here, kinda complicated, during the Vietnam War ((I was too young) yes there was a draft which meant you had to serve. Our military is all volunteers now, and underpaid, but it does have a massive set of perks during and after service. The Vietnam, though if you ran a criminal charge, and there was the loss of citizenship, military prison or served after prison, after decades the penalties gradually lessened depending on each case. Now one registers at 18, maybe 16 you can enlist with parental consent but there are only drafts if there is a massive need for troops and a war. In a conventional war with russia, I would say 70% of registered men and women would sign up instead of being drafted and there are hardship issues one can bring into consideration to be excused. If that came to pass though, any russian would be interned as well as any sympathizer within our borders also commonwealth territories citizens can get US citizenship by serving, peacetime or wartime. Sorry, my family has served in every war including the Revolution.

Regarding Ukrainian men who refuse to participate in their military and support their country to win this war, they should not be eligible to receive any benefits from the government in terms of social, educational and health benefits when they do return. When one abandons the country, then the country shall abandon you.

Some people take a little more convincing than others. Aggressive personalities will be the first to show up, then the patriotic, ones with no kids, etc. Some people are just not built for fighting but may not realize how many support positions are needed. Some are born cowardly.

Another reason why Russia is not taking the West as seriously as they ought to. "In March 2022, a month after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine started, Ekonomichna Pravda compiled a list of the 50 largest foreign corporations doing business in the Russian Federation and estimated the amount of tax they were paying into the aggressor country's coffers.Those companies were found to have earned US$130 billion in revenues (based on 2021 financial statements). During that year, they had paid US$20 billion in taxes to Russia's treasury..." That is a lot of business as usual and that should not be happening for more than the obvious reasons. It also provides ways of covering up illicit trade that does even more to support the Russian war effort.

I understand people dodge a call for draft, for many different reasons, but dodging the Ukrainian draft is unacceptable! Your country needs you! Your culture is on the verge of being eliminated! If Ukraine should fall, how in the hell could you live with yourself. Sure, there may be a time to dodge a draft, but this is not that time. It is a time to dig deep down into your soul. If my country was at risk, it's very existence hanging in the balance, you couldn't stop me from defending my country, get the hell out of my way.

Ukraine had 12 years to fortify everything prior to 2022 it was 10 years. They only started to fortify a year 1/2 into the war. Give me a break. All places that could or would be strategic positions should have been done long ago. So I only feel sorry for the civilians. Even that is leaving with every time you blame others than the people who did this to themself. Their president should be out doing pretty much Fundraising and gathering allies. Your Generals should be leading the war. The two together should not be swapping jobs. That is a way to Lose a war not win.

12:51: Are we witnessing Russia make the same mistakes Germany and Japan did in WW2 in spreading themselves thin? Small controlled retreats by Ukrainians while exhausting Russian logistics all the back to refineries seems like a good strategy as smaller villages get shelled to the extent of not being possible to live in or safely defend and Russian bodies pile up. Diseases are spreading and killing the remaining Russians who don't starve or freeze to death. I suspect these fatalities are not part of any official counts and might be some of Russia's largest losses.

The danger remains very real, as to the Russian Federation, that continued Ukraine attacks on what the average Russian is convinced are civilian targets in Russia, and lack of more progress on the battlefield, along with relatively minor instances of public dissent and protest, will give a more extreme political turn its chance to ascend to power. Russian politics are a complicated situation and there are anti western (right wing, more fascist) extremists as well as potential (more liberal) reformers ready and waiting in the wings. At this moment in the evolution of Russian politics the chances are higher that, short of far more decisive and larger dissent throughout various areas of the Federation risking the survival of the Federation, the "right wing" extremists, who support the war in Ukraine and who would definitely escalate the war and tensions with the west, would have a very real chance to take over power. A sort of political move from the Putin regime's frying pan into the right wing extremist fire situation. The Russian people are not showing much intent or motivation to dissent against the war and against the regime and there are numerous reasons for that. The war has boosted the internal economy. There is more work and there is more money than there was, for many. The media are severely suppressed and controlled. Individual freedom of expression and communication is severely suppressed. State terrorism of the people has increased the level of fear and thus submission to the will of the government. Shortages of goods have not had a severe enough impact on the average Russian to create motivation to dissent. The Russian philosophy of life, bolstered by a returen to state controlled and loyal religion adds to that scenario. Continued Ukraine attacks against what can be argued to be civilian targets, such as oil refinieries, and other similarlly dual purpose infrastructure and facilities, within Russia, have very little effect on the Russian military, but they could have very significant (adverse to Ukraine interests) political effect within Russia. They also provide a ready made justification (within the context of Russian governnment argument) for Russian intensification of attacks on what they see as similar targets in Ukraine (mostly civilian and dual purpose infrastructure). So it does no good and it could do significant harm going forward. Particularly if nothing further happens to stimulate more positive regime change, and increased levels of dissent within the Russian Federation.
So billions upon billions upon billions of dollars and Ukraine is still losing ground.
