    Last year, a local saddlery and tack shop closed and they had bags of all sorts of leather and vinyl scraps with and without tooling. I got a couple small bags of vinyl, but wish I'd gotten more. This project is perfect for them.

    I enjoyed watching this earring tutorial and do love the lightweight style as well. I've had my Sizzix jewelry dies in my cart since before the move to my new state, but kept putting it off. This project makes me itch to make jewelry again. lol. That's such a great tip on the upholstery books that get thrown out. I can't believe they'd waste something that cool. I'll have to check my local stores. Sparkle on!

    Thanks, Lindsey! I like making jewelry, mostly earrings, from a variety of materials and am always looking for new inspiration. I noticed the earrings you had on (with the dangle) a few videos ago and was going to ask you how you made them. Thanks for reading my mind. Love the gelii prints, too. When I use card stock of light weight cardboard for my jewelry, I usually great if with some type of clear varnish -- helps to lengthen the life of jewelry and make it a little stronger. Also love that you mentioned having the back of earrings be nice looytoo. A particular let peeve of mine, on most crafts and jewelry -- the back is usually also seen and should be decorated also. Thanks again for all your videos! Can't wait to.get this scraps of leather out to try some of these.

    • @rtd1791
      @rtd1791 4 роки тому +1

      Don’t use UTEE or Glossy Accents or any of the dimensional glues. That stuff is prone to yellowing and it’s brittle so it cracks. If you have to coat the paper in plastic, use an art grade resin like Ice Resin or the one from Nunn Design.
      But really a simple varnish works or even nothing at all. If your paper has acrylic paint on it, then it already has a plastic coat on it and will probably last longer than your desire to wear the earrings. These are not the type of earring you are likely to swim or take a shower while wearing so waterproofing isn’t strictly necessary.
      I’ve made paper jewelry for many years now and it is surprisingly durable. UTEE and dimensional glues though are not durable and will break or just become ratty looking.

I was so happy when I realized theres other people like me, who do little bit of everything.

      I’d check Dickblick. They usually have a better selection of sizes and good everyday prices. Amazon has lots of different sizes too but their prices are all over the map.

    • @rtd1791
      @rtd1791 4 роки тому

      Didn’t she say she got it from someone who was giving it away? It’s usually furniture stores. They have books of fabric samples that are only good for a set period of time and when new fabrics come out, they used to throw out the old sample books.
      You used to be able to get sample books pretty easily and for free. But clever crafters figured out that the sample books were great for craft projects. So if you live in a city, chances are you won’t be able to get an old sample book for free anymore. But I’d still ask if you happen to be in a furniture store. Good news is that there are lots of sample books for sale on Etsy and EBay. Lots in the $10 range.
      Ten to 15 years ago I asked the sales woman in Ethan Allen for an old sample book and they actually gave me two bags worth of out of date fabric samples. I actually still have a few pieces. It was high quality upholstery fabric with some pieces as large as 18 sq inches. I had to cut off the description tags, but it was still a great score. I’ve even seen a few chairs that were upholstered in fabric samples (patchwork style).
      I just remembered that when I first brought my dog home from the shelter he chewed a great big hole in the arm of my sofa. I actually patched the hole with one of the fabric samples. He chewed a hole in my patch so I sewed a different sample on top of the first one. He was traumatized for about a year after his adoption. He’s still a Velcro dog but much happier since he’s learned we’re his forever family. I kind of miss my patched sofa. 🤣

I went as slow and possible but it was almost like it was melted onto the plastic. This happened on both sides. I was really excited to use it, and I want to buy another one, but is there a way I should be removing it so this doesn’t happen again?

      Im not an expert, just long time print puller and I have no experience about that exact plate, but that doesnt sound at all normal! I would contact the seller, I think you have gotten monday-issue or it has been stored wrong or something else weird. It should remove quite easily, like removing something from a silicone mold. Like melted to the plastic? No, not normal at all!

      Nicole Jane I’d still contact the manufacturer. You never know. I’ve had manufacturers replace bad product I bought at a close out sale before. Once Golden Paints replaced bad texture paste nearly two years after I bought it. I bought a sample pack at a clearance sale and one of the jars was completely dried up. I forgot to call and two years later I was purging my art supplies, and figured I didn’t have anything to lose. Most manufacturers are concerned with their reputations so they try to make customers happy. I’m always happy to tell other makers how awesome Golden is. See how that works?

    • @janemiettinen5176
      @janemiettinen5176 4 роки тому +1

      Nicole Jane - No problemo, glad to help. And rtd has a good point, you can still contact the manufacturer, no matter where you bought it or how cheaply. Ive had similar experience with Fiskars, they replaced my wonky punch years later (bought it and just didnt need it for a long time), the manufacturers want us happy and spreading the word. And many times they want to know about faulty products, Fiskars wanted to look at my punch and how it was broken (they even paid the postage on my behalf and sent small xmas punch with the new one, just to make me happy), so you really should shoot some e-mail to them. You got nothing to lose, so its all gravy if they are as awesome as Golden and Fiskars :)

    • @janemiettinen5176
      @janemiettinen5176 4 роки тому +1

      It really shouldnt, since they are made so you should be able to pull *all* of the print. But it might, depend on what plate you have. Mine is GelPress, that wont stain, but Ive seen videos from GelliPlate owners, who have gotten stains. Or there might be some differences in the batches they are made, since Ive seen also non-stained GPlates. The stains are just cosmetic and wont affect any future prints, but if you are worried, do a small test with lightest yellow you have. Maybe on the corner or even on the side. If it stains, you can still use alcohol inks, just put on thin layer of acrylic medium first and let it dry before ink-play can commence. Happy print pulling :)

    wow that is one large gelatin plate. I really love this idea. What a great use of things we might throw away. Love the look. I don't like heavy earrings either. Congrats on 10 yrs that's awesome. If you have the time would you mind looking at my channel and just tell me what you think in a comment. Thank you.

    Hi what is that plate thingy and the lil roller thing that cut your shapes? I need that. Can I use my own acrylic paint

      aqua fina Lindsay is using a Gelly Press Gel plate 8 by 10 inches and the roller thing is a rubber Brayer. Not sure what brand she’s using but speedball has some.

      @@aquafina6544 oh, ahaha sorry. I think she uses a Sizzix Big Shot die cutting machine. But her version is really old. The new versions don't look like that anymore.

      You can also make a paper template of a teardrop shape and trace and cut it by hand so you dont have to buy a machine for one project.

    What is the machine you’re using to cut them with? Maybe I need my glasses but I’m not seeing what it’s called. 😃

    The link to the dies takes you to a review of Jane Davenport paints.

      Yes it does . Would love the correct link to buy the dies. Ty

      The link works now, but it looks like the dies have been snatched up. Though I’m sure if you search leather earring dies others will show up.

    You make things so fun! By the way, Vicki Papaianonou has been on UA-cam for 12 years. Check out her first video, it is just as good as yours.
