I made this a while ago when I was bored, I rarely post on this account & even though this is a small amount of likes & views, it's actually pretty big to me considering I didn't expect anyone to actually see this, so thank you guys a lot for giving this attention.

My theory on this song is this girl named abbey, as the lyrics say “I was born hungry” meaning since birth she has been hungry, her parents, or mom mainly, left her in a dark room or place, most likely in a basement, or in ground, they left her there, leaving her to die from starvation, every time they check if she is alive that’s why she sees a light of some sorts, that she only SOMETIMES sees, or she is already in the afterlife and has to find escape, that light is probably the afterlife giving her a chance to see heaven
My other theory is that it’s that or she is in a comma, every time she tries to wake out of it, but when she tries to it puts her back in this dark place, so that’s why she sees the light sometimes, the light maybe the light from the hospital bed, she maybe imagining that she was born instead of being alive and born a long time ago, since they DONT feed you in comas, that’s why feels so hungry, she also states that she was born as _something_ unsure of what yet, the darkness in her is probably her hitting close to death, the dream is probably her old memories as she remembers what happens slowly, she wants something but is unsure of what that thing is, so maybe it’s her wants to go back to reality and wanting to be free from this darkness

@@Melanie_martinezfan65 Very interesting, I really like your interpretation! I've always interpreted this song differently, but that's what I love about Mitski; she's said before that her songs are our songs and it's up to us how we wanna interpret it.
I've always thought of Abbey as not a random girl, but us, the person listening to the song. Mainly because the way I interpret it makes me relate to it a lot more. To summarize, and kind of as a warning incase this is a sensitive topic, I think this song is about the struggles of mental illness and the desire to end your life.
The "I am hungry part" always made me think of it as sort of a metaphor for feeling unsatisfied and/or empty, but not exactly knowing what you need mentally to stop the hunger for a more pleasant feeling - hence the "what do I need?" part. The "I was born hungry" part to me represents how most of us with mental illnesses are born into them, and they are genetically passed down.
I interpreted the "I am something" as not knowing your purpose in life/struggling to find your self worth, trying to reassure yourself that you are something, but not knowing exactly what makes you something.
in my opinion, "There is a light that I can see, but only it seems when there's darkness in me" represents sort of knocking on heaven's door (a saying here which means approaching death) when you're in a very dark emotional state, when you're mentally going through so much you can feel yourself slowly giving up. The darkness represents the dark times you're going through, and the light is a peaceful release of death, how many people are sometimes going through such a tough time that they considering going towards the light.
"There is a dream that I sometimes see that only appears in the dark of sleep." very obviously connects to later on in the song "- it sleeps in me, keeps me awake in the night, crying set me free." and the dream represents yourself begging you to set yourself free as in set your soul free and kill yourself, the "dark of sleep" representing death which is why this is the only time the dream appears, and waking every night crying set me free is an example of how thoughts like this trap us in a dark state and all we wanna do is escape.
I think the "I am waiting" part is like waiting for something big to happen, something special to happen, something to prove to yourself that you in fact were born something, that you're here for a reason. The continuous use of "I am something" is like the part of us that's desperately trying to hold on and convince ourselves to stay alive.
I know I didn't dissect every lyric really, but that's how I interpreted this song. As I said, I like your theories, they're really cool!! Definitely should be a book/movie or something. 💕
