The flood doesn't represent life struggles and pain though..it represents God's judgement. (death and God's Judgenent) Those who built their house on the sand was a person trusting in their works to save them from God's judgement. (Even this person is a type of person whom Jesus will say "I never knew you" to because they were trusting in their works) But the person who is built upon the rock is trusting alone in Christ to save them, because He takes their hell punishment in the believer's place and FREELY gives the believer His reward.(two things we will never deserve!) When these people called Jesus "Lord Lord" they weren't only trusting alone in Jesus as their reason for going to heaven.. They were ultimately trusting in Jesus 50% and themself 50% because they thought the things they did played part in them going to heaven. And because they thought and reasoned that way, trusting ultimately not in Jesus at all, He said "depart from Me you workers of lawlessness" Jesus only offers to die for 100% of our sin if 100% of our trust is only in what He did. If someone walked away from the faith, they went out because they were never of the faith..
