Kia ora from New Zealand! New subscriber/old teacher (20 years in ed) here, and I'm grateful to find a kindred spirit on the interwebs. ;-) I teach Year 7 & 8 (6th & 7th grade) drama Down Under, so I'm grateful the UA-cam gods popped you in my feed. This is the 2nd video of yours I've enjoyed, and I loved (and will steal from!) your Classroom Tour video. All the best for a good return to school!

This was so fun to watch! I have 5 preps, so I totally understand the chaos! I hope you keep making videos; there’s not a lot of us out there!

One of my students actually gifted me a mug that says "Chaos Coordinator" - it could not be more true! Sending all the relaxing summer vibes!

@@cayleejo That’s awesome! I was wondering about curriculum - what do you use for theatre and video production? I also teach both and I piece a lot of stuff together, so I’m always curious how others do it.

@@thepageandstage 100% pieced together! I am fortunate to have a lot of flexibility with my curriculum from my district. With my 8th grade theatre production I offer an interest inventory at the beginning to get a feel for what they're wanting - one year I had a class that was really interested in puppetry, so we went hard into the history and construction of puppets and leaned into voice acting. Other classes have been more interested in reading and analyzing classic plays and more traditional acting techniques. It can be a little nervewracking going into the first day not quite knowing what they will want, but I love that I can adapt it to their wants! In video production I'm a little more strict - I spend the first 6 weeks on shot composition, angles, and storyboarding, and then we start our video projects (music video, silent films, and movie trailers are my biggest hits!).

@@cayleejo Sounds similar to what I piece together. I also love curriculum that leaves space for student choice!

Im studying theater but didn’t know how to use it without being a full blown actor. This is a path I’m looking into now so I’m super happy to find this video!

as someone interested in theatre education, what is your overtime schedule like? I know a lot of extra time must go into putting on school productions!

Would you be willing to walk us through the process of choosing a school play and the process of purchasing it/requesting the rights for it?

How much of what you cover in the school year is actually curriculum, and how much is you making things up on your experience/on the fly?

    • @cayleejo

I start the year with a curriculum/framework to fill the entire year, but I definitely improv as I go if something current/relevant pops up, or if I find that a particular group of students really latches onto a topic. For example, I had one group of kids who LOVED puppetry so I revamped the rest of my semester to still follow my curriculum, but with puppetry elements whenever possible.

Do you have any advice for people joining an audition panel? I am a student choreographer and have never held auditions before but need to for the next musical I am casting. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

To what extent do teachers go into it for the money?

    • @cayleejo

This is a great question! Honestly this profession doesn’t pay enough (considering the education required and frequent overtime), but I believe many enter it for the desire to help others and impact future generations. The health insurance, retirement plan, and holidays off are also incentives for many!
