Hey guys! Instead of using a 12 string guitar in this video, I decided to use an entry level Moukey acoustic sent to me from the kind folks at Donner. I was very surprised at the sound I was getting considering the price tag on this instrument. It sounded great when I mic’d it, stayed in tune, and the neck/action set up felt great in the palm of my hand. Much better than what I started out with (Sovereign Sears Guitar). Donner has some back to school sales happening now so if you are a beginner and looking for some really good deals, there are some links in my description worth checking out.
In this song, I paid special attention to Tom Scholz’s lead playing and I was blown away by his feel and sense of vibrato. And his tone as well! Just an all around amazing player and I have strong appreciation for him being a mastermind in the studio. In the verses, my picking pattern differs from his and you can choose an approach that you are comfortable with. I used strictly alternate picking (down, up, down, up) as the pattern and felt very comfortable playing it this way. If you are new to picking chords, you may choose to pick in the direction you are going which is also known as economy picking.
Vibrato is a must in this tune. Maybe I should do a video specifically on that technique? Might be cool. My approach to using vibrato is to do like a twisting motion from my forearm (like turning a door knob) instead of forcing it from the fingers. This song is definitely more about the feel from your vibrato and bends than shredding it up.
Are there any more classic Boston Tunes? Or even so, are there any more Classic Epic Rock Tunes? Did I cover them all? 🤔 Leave a comment below!
If I were to make a request, it would be Samba Pa Ti by Carlos Santana. My grandmother's been asking me to learn it for a couple months now but I can't find any good tabs.
You **MUST** do Hitch a Ride by Boston. The solos are incredible
Foreplay/Long Time would be amazing!
foreplay/longtime would be a great Boston tune, but this one is my favourite anyways so I'm happy.
Do it Again By steely Dan
This is more than a Cover….
What do you mean
(More than a cover)
😂😂 that’s funny
@@lordbluebaron2270 it’s a feeling
God damnit, why can’t I think of comments like this!👏👏👏
Love the addition of the MIT shirt!
It’s not just the playing it’s extra attention payed to outfits, backgrounds, guitars, etc. always well played, well dressed and assuming well tabbed. Oh, and tone’s are very on point as well.
Another intro to add to my library of songs I can only play 30 seconds of.
Haha that's pretty much all I do. Just intro UA-cam shorts.
One of the best songs ever written, my opinion.
Definitely true
I agree, how can you not love this song? The opening riff reminds me of Teen Spirit too.
Excellent tutorial and playing, as usual. Thank you for this gem and all the other top quality videos!
one of the first songs I learned after I got started playing guitar. Just love this song. Thanks for the memories...
You nailed that solo, great job!
one of the best songs,,,timeless...face's fade as the years go by... ..
The stems for this song are a real joy to listen to. There are like 20 parts - almost everything is double tracked - and even the layered guitars don't play the same notes. Naturally a 100% transcription is quite hellish. The solo actually has three(!) guitars playing in tandem for a natural tight chorus. And the acoustic is backed by a soft clean electric, which with the two 12 strings creates such a mystical intro.
Top 3 easiest solos:
1. Smells like teen spirit
2. More than a feeling
3. You shook me all night long
This is definitely not one of the easiest solos. The vibrato is hard to get down perfectly and it requires 2 guitars, not to mention the pinch harmonics.
@@Magst3r1 true this is not as easy as it might look to a beginner... if you want to be close to the original at least
I remember buying this as my first album staring at the speakers and couldn't believe as record could sound as huge ! Amazing guitar playing by Tom Scholtz
he is a genius in my opinion, not only is he a great guitar player, but he invented so many of his own devices to make his tone recognizable.
Same here
A classic! Perfectly played as usual.
What a song ! I have been always amazed by the production of this record, so perfect !
Thank you for this!!! I love that you're including easier songs for us bedroom guitarists :) Thanks again! It's a huge help for my playing
One those great rock songs never get tired of hearing ...I always turn it up when it's on the radio .. thanks for taking the time on this one ..
My favorite song of all time, primarily because of the bridge guitar solos and the pre chorus solo
Once a long time I had this band we used to play this song and I'd sing it too....
I can't anymore...my high pitches are gone...
:(
But I still love this song!
Thanks to take me back to that time again!
Perfect version!
Regards from Rio
Timing is everything on this song
Thanks I have been wanting this song for a while and you finally did it thanks very much!
10 thumbs up. Years ago, I figured a few parts of that song out by listening to it
but you just filled in all the gaps for me cheers.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Excellent as always. Great choice of song too.
Love the chorus part, so nostalgic.
Thank you for this Mr Tabs!
This is an incredible share, attention to detail and on point, thank you Sir, for taking the time to do this, well orchestrated Id say, great job, thank you and GOD bless you, Dean
A simple but very effective piece of music to play on guitar... things all get very difficult when you try to actually sing this song! Great cover as always
A classic of the rock
Great cover!. And going the extra mile with the MIT shirt was a nice touch.
The Rockman modules in the background are a nice touch.
I still remember decades ago when Boston first started to get big our local FM radio station got there hands on a demo tape Boston made by themselves before they were signed. I swear it was so perfect and polished it didn't sound that different than the later released studio version.
Yes, I concur, I was 12 years old when this got released, this song, mostly this album, was one of a kind !!!i I feel at that time Boston stood out for their sound, constantly heard ever where you go, as I got a littlle older in my teens it bwas constantly played around our small town.
Thanks for all your hard work and talent👌🏻👏🏻
This one has been on the list for a while now for me. I have no excuses now not to learn it. Thanks !
Top notch.
Thank you...I will be practicing this a LOT!!!
Best guitar cover channel on UA-cam by far.
This is the first long I learned 7 years ago. Glad I kept with it.
Omg thank you. I had to learn this song for a class and I’ve only been playing guitar for a few months, but this made it so much easier.
The neck bend is an excellent touch

I just want to say thank you. My timing was off for years, because to get the chorus I would play along to the outro without realizing it didnt have the dotted note
Great lesson, as usual, and nice touch with the MIT shirt.
Came here to make the same comment about the shirt 😂

Wearing Tom’s alma mater!, Awesome and great guitar work as you always do. Appreciate it.
Wow! Thank you so much.
So dang good!
Awesome. Thanks.
Good job ! Bravo
Awesome as ever! It would be perfect if the tab page turns were bang on the start of the bar, but that's just me being super, super picky.
When you absolutely, positively, have to nail every note in the song.... Mr Tabs every time :)
Like the homage to MIT with the t-shirt.
