- So how do you teach spelling to kids? In today's much requested homeschooling video I am sharing my thoughts on All About Spelling vs. Spelling You See. Both are very popular homeschooling curriculum but which one do I like better? This video is a review/comparison of both programs as well as a little bit about what spelling program we are using right now.

Logic of English has been the answer for us... Worth looking into for anyone trying to find a spelling/reading program. It teaches the phonograms, the rules, it has a spelling list, it teaches reading, and comprehension, grammar, and vocab... I adore it!

My mom chose All About Spelling. It is very thorough in my opinion, but it does work. I was taught a lot of phonics, so now, if I come across a word I don't know, I sound it out for them most part, but sometimes the way I say the word is not correct. But I am glad that I had that education.
I’m planning out our 2nd homeschool year (1st grade) and am feeling a lot more anxiety than kinder. The take away I’m getting from this is to keep things simple. I feel like that’s my mantra every time I dive into researching curriculum.
Yes, less is definitely more...especially if you're feeling overwhelmed!
Thanks for this video! I just use spelling lists and different active ways (hopscotch, trampoline, sidewalk chalk, etc) to practice.
Thank you so much! We just ran into the same issue with Spelling you see. Loved the first book but 3 lessons into the second I started creating my own lists because she’s not learning to spell the words. She needs her basic words memorized. Not Hubbard and cupboard 😂 will be trying the spelling lists- just as I learned. Thanks again!
This is good. I put AAS aside too...because with 5 kids...it was so intensive on the teacher! I couldn't keep up and continue all the basics, like reading, too!
We currently use Spelling You See and my kids typically get all of the words right at the end of each lesson. We just finished Jack and Jill and Wild Tales. It is easy on the teacher which is a big win! We'll see how it works long term.

Great to know your experiance, but as you said, AAS is for learning difficulties students, and learning rules give them a sense of security and that is what they need. I am glad you are searching for what is the best for your child and let us know .

Thank you so much for your review. We’ve been in a super intense rule based spelling and my daughter and I have been struggling!!!! These two were the most popular but I didn’t want rule based and I know copying does nothing for my child. Thank you, thank you thank you for your suggestion. I already ordered the spectrum book and bought the editable file. I learned by lists, my kids will do the same.

I am leaning hard on all your videos now that we’re “distance learning” and coming to realize the school doesn’t really have a systematic way of teaching the kids except for memorizing them as sight words! Eek! I’m glad I already taught my daughter to sound out because she wouldn’t have caught on at school this year.
Memorizing sight words does work because that's how my oldest daughter was taught to read when she was in public school. I think they do that so they can get them "reading" faster. That being said, I think it's important to be open other ways of teaching/learning. That's just one of the many blessing of homeschooling, right?

I totally agree with you about the spelling! We love and use LOE foundations which is an all in one language arts program but I still use spelling Workout because those different activities each day during the week using the spelling words reallyREALLY works for my kiddo
Meant to add-TYFS! This is so informative. Good to know that AAS is teacher intensive..not ready to add another program like that to my plate.
Any phonics or spelling program that is not directly connected to vocabulary development will be minimally effective at best. I'm not really sure what you do for vocabulary instruction, but learning the meanings of the spelling words is key. This is especially true when words become more complex and include more Latin and Greek roots.
I use spelling U see for my boys 1st & 2nd grade. My boys LOVE it! They do amazing on it... my boys are drawn to the rhymes and the songs and the clapping ect...and they get all the words right most weeks. Both are great spellers. One is a strong reader the other is a struggling reader...but both of their spelling is Amazing. So don't be turned of by others experiences...Try it out for yourself! I have no "affiliations' with anything and this is just my first year homeschooling...the books are not that expensive so it wouldn't hurt to try it...each child learns very different.
I'm so glad Spelling You See is working for you and your boys! It didn't work for us but for now, I've found something that does. I'm so thankful that there are so many homeschooling programs out there for us to choose from! :)

Building Spelling Skills is a great and very affordable spelling option for a more traditional approach with word lists each week. It's by Christian Liberty Press. (Evan Moore has something under the same name, but that's different.) AAS, same for us, love the idea, but it's a lot to manage, especially with multiple kids. We're currently doing BSS and SUS. My 5th grader is doing well with each. My Kinder just has SUS and I'm loving it at that level. My 3rd grader is also doing both BSS and SUS... And I don't think either option is making a big impact. Inattentive ADHD is a factor with that child. I'm going to incorporate ADHD speeling tips and tricks, and am currently trying to decide if changing or dropping any curriculum for that child would be best, or just making some adjustments within those. I've liked hitting their spelling from two different angles this year for good measure, especially since SUS is so fast and easy, and like you said, it has bonus features of extra handwriting practice and informational readings at higher levels and fun texts for younger levels. My Kinder also has ADHD, hyperactive, so we'll see how SUS holds up moving into 1st grade, and if BSS or something else would be a good fit to round it out. It's hard to want to have different kids using different curriculum, but sometimes that's just what's best and one of the benefits of homeschooling.
This is so helpful. I feel the same way with spelling you see. I really like the kindergarten level but my second grader is not doing good with it. I've been thinking about getting all about spelling and now after watching this I'm thinking of getting all about reading too!
Tabitha Kelley I agree! I was using spelling you see for my 2nd grader and kindergartner. We love the kindergarten level but the one for my son just didn't work out. He found it boring and really wasn't learning much. We switched to Soaring with Spelling which is similar to the spectrum one. He loves it and has been working out a lot better.
You will love All About Reading! It's such a gentle, yet thorough, program!
My son LOVES Spelling U See and my daughter HATES it! I downloaded the pack from TPT and my daughter is loving it! We have All About Spelling and I may use it with my younger daughter for 1st grade next school year

Thanks for the fabulous review. My son will finish 2nd grade and then we'll start homeschooling. I plan to start him with AAS as he hates writing and is a kinesthetic learner. I'll look at the other curricula you mentioned too.
I'm so glad it was helpful! For a kinesthetic learner, AAS is probably a good fit. We no longer use it but I do like how it teaches to all of the learning styles!

Agreed with the boredom and heavy rules with AAS. About to finish level 3 and want to try something different. We have just added IEW and he loves it thus far! But need a spelling that isn't time consuming.
We have been using Evan Moor’s “A Word a Day” and have been loving it! It’s simple and gets the job done for us!

We've used SUS for 2nd & 3rd grade now (the only spelling curriculum we've ever used.) One thing that can help is at the beginning of the week, after you read the passage through, point out the words that might be difficult for your child and let them know they may want to give some extra attention to those.
I think it's a great program, but we're going to be trying All About Spelling next year because my child says that the copy work is too boring and the lesson drags on and on. We'll see how it goes!
Thanks for this! I'm currently trying to choose between All About Spelling and Hooked on Spelling. My mom taught me to read and spell simultaneously with phonics in the '80s, but my youngest, (2nd grade daughter), learns differently than me. We just started homeschooling her this school year because we felt she was not grasping reading well in public school, and we could foresee 2nd grade being a real struggle if she stayed there. I'm currently using "Learning to Read a Different Way" and "Hooked on Phonics - Level 5". (Not all in the same day or she gets overwhelmed and antsy). I may need to just get her fluid and confident in reading before we start spelling.
Isn't that such a huge blessing of homeschooling to be able to customize a program that works for your kids? I think All About Spelling is a great program but it didn't work for us and we've found a more traditional spelling approach works best. I hope you find the perfect spelling program for you and your daughter!

I totally agree. We loved AAR and AAS for k-1st. They are so comprehensive, but time consuming. I couldn’t do both with and care for a preschooler and infant. We dropped AAS and did just AAR as well. I’ve not found anything that compares to All About Spelling as far as providing rules for Spelling, but there’s got to a simple rule book out there to use alongside a basic spelling program. When I find it, I’ll let you know.

The same thing happened with us using Spelling You See. Same exact thing. I’m totally looking for something traditional as well. Just basic.
I'm glad I'm not alone about that because I've never heard anyone else say they didn't like it. We are using Evan Moor's spelling workbook now. It's been a much better fit for us.
A Place to Nest Yeah, every review ranks it as a top spelling curriculum. I had to set the level 1 book aside for my kindergartener as soon as I saw it. We did attempt it for a second time just to follow through but it was slow going and I wasn’t convinced of the process. When I saw the level for my third grader, I immediately knew it was too much for him as well. We back tracked a level and he did the work but I absolutely did not see him learning to spell. He misspelled so many words when I dictated that in the end I just made him continue with it as copywork. I really thought the problem was me!
No, you're not the problem and while I love the idea of the program, it just doesn't work for everybody.
Great video!! We definitely bombed with All About Spelling in the beginning of our HS journey. My eldest son uses Spelling You See and loves it. We’ve even used the Logic of English for him. He’s dyslexic, so things can work for months then never again.

We have used spelling you see for my son for 2 years . I haven’t seen a lot of progress . When he was in public school he hated having a list of spelling words and would stress out about learning words . I’m debating weather to keep using SYS…or go with a more conventional way . Not sure what to use
My kids are doing really well with Spelling U See but I feel that they know the words and is getting boring. We will take a break from it next semester. I’m not sure if they need a more advance program. I love the copy work.
I loved the copywork, too but it just didn't work for us. A more traditional, memorization based program has been working well for us.
How important do you feel the writing was to All About Spelling? We started AAS when we started AAR level 2 but that was half way through his kindergarten year. With the actual spelling he is doing outstanding but getting him to write is like pulling teeth. With fine motor skills he is a typical 5 year old boy. I'm trying to figure out if we should just take a break from spelling or keep going but not make him do all the writing. At this point we have just been writing two words or phrases a day.
There isn't much writing in AAS at all, at least not in the first two levels. As far as spelling programs go, AAS has less writing than any other one I've seen.

Is there a limit on the amount of words and the length?
Thanks for the video!! We have been doing the traditional method this past year for second grade after my son did K and 1st in the public school system... and what im starting to notice is that while he gets 100% on the tests for the week when he uses them in his writing weeks later he seems to forget how to spell the same words... All About Spelling just sounds way too teacher intensive (I have a toddler at home also)... I picked up Spelling You See for next year but im not sure about it....

My daughter hates writing and really drags her feet. I wish I knew that before purchasing spelling you see.
Oh dear! Yes, Spelling You See is lots of writing. All About Spelling has very little writing so she may prefer that even though it's more work for you.
Interesting that she is such a good reader and the spelling isn't up to par. I wonder why that is.
My son is the same way! I have no idea why or what spelling to use to help him. He picked up reading easily, reads above his level but is a horrible speller!

Do you still use Spectrum Spelling, and has it continued to work well for you?
I am using Evan Moor's Building Spelling Skills at the moment. It seems to be a step-up from Spectrum Spelling.
Thank you for your honest opinion! I am wondering about retention using the spectrum spelling lists? If you go back a few weeks later and retest with lists she hasn't done in awhile, how does she do? That is my biggest worry with using just lists.
I don't usually retest later on but I can typically tell in her daily writing if she's remembering how to spell things.
But can she spell the works weeks later? My daughter (who happens to be dyslexic) would get 100% on her spelling test at public school, but could not spell them later. We have used All About Spelling and it didn't work for us. We are currently trying Spelling You See. We haven't used it long enough to see if it is working or not. I am not sure if we should try something else. :/
Spelling You See might work really well for you guys. So far, things are still going well with Spectrum Spelling so we will see how it goes.
