Dude, SAME, this is easily my favorite pedal of all time. Not only is it really inspiring and just *fun*, but it’s also one of those pedals that I truly think still has that “secret sauce”. Meaning, clones of it, whether pedals or plugins, are just no where near its precision of intonation and pitch; basically all plugin copies have that “bad glitchiness” in some register or octave. This thing’s harmonies are so pure, it’s incredible.
I have two wh1 pedals because I keep one as backup. The wh1 was made by IVL technologies and licensed to digitech. All the coolest whammy guitar sounds you've heard on records are mostly the wh1. It also has the best buffer when off, so put it first in your signal chain followed by true bypass pedals. The whammy 4 is pretty good too but it's bulky. The best one over all is the wh1 because it's the smallest one, it sounds the best and has an excellent buffer. If anyone reissues the wh1 it would have to be IVL technologies but I believe they don't make the same chips anymore so thaþ may never happen.
One of the best effects pedals ever made, and the drop tune can basically give you a baritone that is indistinguishable from a real baritone to most listeners.
I honestly have felt guilty over the years trying to collect every whammy possible, it feels like a waste of money, but I can't stop. I have an addiction. I am so happy to have found this support group. I have the WH-1, XP-100 (XP-ALL modded), the IV, DT, Drop. I just bought the Thomman Satin Black 70th anniversary thanks to your video (it looks different enough to justify it when I already have the DT, plus the DT not having a classic mode). I'm on the lookout for a mint Whammy II, and a Silver anniversary IV next. I even recently purchased the Expression Factory EX-7 and the old school RP7 (not official "Whammy" devices but they whammy non-the-less), and I'm trying to not stray TOO far from the official "Whammy" devices. The XP-100 also has the input level like the II, but I would use a true bypass looper for "tone suck" pedals like that and the Whammy II. Saw one guy on UA-cam did a cool mod where he put a spring under the toe of the whammy pedal so the treadle pushes back against your foot, makes it easier to actually sound like a legit whammy bar, and not a "weeooo weeooo" police siren in Paris.. Here it is, no affiliation, old 8 year old video: ua-cam.com/video/t7k1051YtOE/v-deo.html
I think Load and Reload get far too much hate. They both have amazing songs on them. My only knock is that I think they could've cut a bunch of filler and just made one killer album.
hell yeah! When I started playing again in 2020 i got a Drop pedal, which i sold a bit later, but then i got a DT when there were rumblings that Digitech was going out of business
If i only had waited a bit longer...😫 I bought my first red whammy V from thoman a few week's before this black version was released... This black one would fit to my rig much better then the red... Look's awesome...
I have a Whammy V. Got a good deal on a used one a few years back and I use it like the drop tune pedal in addition to normal whammy functions. You can use the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Down settings to tune down two, four, five steps, etc. and I have my tuner after the whammy which allows me to even get the missing half steps with some fiddling. Not super practical but it does the job for some quick jamming to a song at home.
I recommend whammy enthusiasts look up the XP-ALL: A surplus of xp200, 300 and 400 sound chips were discovered somewhere and modders are making all 4 pedals in one in a XP-100 whammy chassis. I love mine!
Honestly the whammy is one of the most versatile pedals. I’ve been playing for 15+ years and have always had a whammy and a wah pedal on my board one way or another. EDIT you seem to be a bit of a digitech fan? What other pedals are your favorite? I saw the freqout and I LOOOOOVE that pedal. It was worth every single penny
Never got into the Whammy, but love my Freqout to death. All kinds of youtube videos where people use it as a momentary effect. Mine? Always on. Dialed mine in to do the decay into feedback sound.
Everytime there's a discussion about this with friends I always laff because NOBODY could figure out what Diamond Darrell " Dimebag " was doing on the song Becoming. Took me a while before I learned 😀
There's a bit of nostalgia talking there. Whammies never had accurate tracking until Digitech saw competition from Electro Harmonix and Morpheus with things like the HOG, POG, DropTune and Bomber, which had better tracking than the Whammy IV and also had polyphonic pitch shifting. Then Digitech improved on the Whammy with the Whammy DT and subsequent products.
Nice collection indeed!!! Any plans for making a comparison video between the whammy 5 and the bass whammy in a guitar?? The Dunlop crybaby bass wah sounds amazing with a guitar and I wonder if that happens with the whammy too 🤷♂️
If you really want to collect, I think you are neglecting the Digitech ex 7 expression factory - its a whammy in there. One of the best rotary/morley effects ever on that thing.
@@SonicDriveStudio Yeah, OG is my fav, too. ❤️ I just found 5 of them, three in boxes, with an xp-100 … and I have more somewhere, because I know I have an Analogman modded one, too. I remember selling one or two throughout the years, as well … lol.
I have the wh1 and the xp100. Honestly prefer the xp even though it’s a huge footprint but I love the digital readout, foot controls, volume boost and that weird “evil ice cream truck warble” it has
I personally like the bomber pedal more. The Bomber pedal was made by the same guy who designed the whammy buy you don't have to bend over to change the settings, and its also true bypass..
There's lots of conflicting information online. Can Whammy 5 do anything that DT cannot, besides the classic mode? Cause correct me if I'm wrong but DT is fixed to Chords mode forever and otherwise it can do everything Whammy 5 can and more, and will sound the same. Is that right? I'm not interested in classic mode (I want smooth less glitchy polyphonic anyway) but I don't want to pay extra for DT and end up missing out on anything I may want that V could do. Can you advise?
I personally prefer my ehx pitchfork than my old whammy 5 I think it was? Has less tone suck to my ears… becoming will always be the whammy pedal somg for me
Yeah yeah whammy’s are awesome. I’m just stoked there is another guitarist that has Re-Load as his favorite Metallica album. I always get shit for it, which I find really funny because taste is personal. But fuel still pumps me up. The memory remains was a video clip and song that made me really get into guitar. Whammy…. Will always be Korn for me. I have the 5. Love it as well. Great vid dude
I have a Whammy 4, and it’s true. The tone sucking is terrible. But it’s also a magic effect. This whammy could be modified to be a truenypass to avoid the tone sucking?
@@SonicDriveStudio I just want to drop tune and use whammy. Maybe it’s best to get the standalone drop alongside this. Thanks for the video. That thing is killer

2 pedals that I will never own : POG & WHAMMY. Because of people the tried to emulate Morello's sound and thought "yeah I'm cool by owning a whammy" and abusing the pog so the whole concert sound like church organ played on an old cassette deck :D but many of you get cool things from it, i'm sure!!

Awesome! Welcome :)
Just as I was getting my pedal collection down to a manageable size, you come along and show me to a must-have whammy! 😭
"...Reload, one of my favorite Metallica records" probably the first time that phrase has been uttered by anyone.
I don't care, I love it
Reload is objectively a good metal album. The fact that most people have bad musical taste is not metallica fault. 😂
Are you also posting:
“It’s not real metal, because real metal is Slayer and nothing else”
Haha

Yeah, I think the warble and "inaccuracies" add to the charm. However, they vary in the perceived delay/latency of the tracking
