Replacing a Very Old and Broken RV Skylight

- My customer asked me to inspect his skylight. Yes it was bad....VERY BAD! So here's just a quick run down of it's replacement. Also, I give my opinion about skylight sealant.
You can trust this man! He is clearly honest and knows his business.
Just terrible designs. WHY not make it out of something UV proof? WHY not build the inner lens with a gutter around it and a small drain in one side so any water intrusion that happens drips into the shower?
QUESTION: Would applying a UV protectant prolong the life of the skylight?
Great video best one on UA-cam so far. I will be changing my skylight in a few days this was helpful.
thank you very much, I hope it helps!
Some 6” eternabond tape would have been your best friend for sealing up the perimeter of the new skylight
LOL..I have a love hate relationship with it
Thank you for all the time and patience you put into your of videos. The time you take in detail explaining everything. With your videos, I have been able to maintain my leaky, less than perfect 2010 Holiday Rambler camper. Now maybe I will be able to maintain it for another 10 years and break even. I do not wish for another one, because they all have the same problems. Thanks James
You are so welcome! I am sorry you having issues, if there is a silver lining, it does seem like they all do
I know im asking the wrong place but does anybody know a tool to log back into an instagram account??
I somehow lost my password. I appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Marshall Turner instablaster :)
i have to say..i am in the process of replacing my skylight and repairing my rv roof i just wish they used screws...everything has a rivet .. and lots of them..damn you monaco
Goooooood release your anger. I understand you fully!
Just paid $150 for a replacement. The plastic is thin, not much better quality than a plastic disposable cup.
Wow butyl for skylight! Doesn’t butyl lack uv protection?
Good, but I can't believe you didn't replace the rusty $5 push-on internal edging strip. It would have taken about a minute.
I don't put everything on camera either
sorry second comment..noticed you didnt replace the lower cover.. is it really needed..cant find one for mine so was just going to use a piece of plexiglass cut to fit
The inside cover is not vital and many RVs do not have one......it does help with condensation drainage though.
Greate job and well done.you have given the hope I can do this to go out and try it myself.
Have fun!
Glad I found your video. Went up on my roof yesterday and found my skylight had BIG cracks.
I had bought a 94 Bounder and the previous owner said he had resealed. Ha Ha!! All the vents looked like the sealer was original.
The roof really is the most vital part of a RV. It's failure really causes so many more issues. I'm glad you found it before the problem got worse.
I wish you could option delete skylights in your rv. It is like having tiny ovens mounted in your ceiling that leak water and cause damage while heating up your RV.
I would get some aluminum strips with holes drilled at the mounting holes of the skylight and then ran the screws through the aluminum strip and the skylight attaching everything down. It will spread out the load to the entire edge instead of just at the mounting holes. A lot stronger and less chance of causing cracks at the mounting holes.
It would, these are crazy cheap and crazy expensive at the same time.
Keep up the great work you doing and keep safe out there
You should get a chest harness for your camera, like they use for police body cameras, that way you can work with two hands
I appreciate that, I have found too many cameras make editing very tedious so I just use my phone, and I have to keep that available for calls still. Thanks!!
Awesome job! I get mine done on my motorhome this week. Wish me success.
Good luck!
If I was to take off the skylight and just cover it up. What to you recommend to do. We hate it. We have it covered from the inside
Great question. The easiest would be a 1/8th inch plate of aluminum so that it has enough body not to flex with a perimeter screw down.
Now plaster it with eternabond tape, haha.
There are ppl that love that stuff to cure leaks,
Some people would for sure. I don't like putting eternabond on bumpy surfaces either...but I did think about it. Thanks! :)
If you can get that down in a second you need to work from me lol
Nice!
Plasticizers in the sealant may diffuse into the plastic and chemically break down the organic polymer chains.
I always recommend going with what was originally on the roof
Nice Job and explanation! And How Dicor can attack Acrylic or polycarbonate? Naw... don't think so. Gonna have to agree with you ah million %
It does have some solvents that could damage it, but the industry's been doing it for decades. I think it's just a way for the skylight manufacturer to make excuses.
Question after all that lap sealant you used to fix the gap, couldn’t you have went over the lap sealant once dry with eteral bond tape on top of the gap extending out to the roof to avoid more leaks going to the skylight
The lap sealant diverts water.
Sorry, Whats the justifiable reason why didn't you clean or replace the moldy opening edging?
it's not mold, just discoloring in the plastic.
Ever tried a hot knife to remove old butyl?
It's so hot here most of the time, all knives are hot knives
@@AZExpert Ouch, Alaska does have a different view of a lot of this work. Here we would of had to put that clear inner panel back in to keep condensation at bay. Was surprised the inner panel was not sealed in place well.
What's your honest opinion on roof sealants? the Dicor sealant I see used a lot with these rubber roofs seems to crack after a few yrs. and roof leaks happen, a friend of mine who does commercial and industrial rubber roofs for a living recommends Mulco Super Expert caulking and claims it will last at least 15 yrs. and will flex with any movement of the RV , I'm going to put a new rubber roof on my RV soon and want to use the best product for long life and low maintenance, please advise.
the best advice I can give is that the lap sealant is liquid flashing to redirect water and not the seal preventing water intrusion. If water is leaking it, there is an installation issue which should be addressed.
@@AZExpert Yes I believe that the lap sealants are misused in a lot of cases, I have watched a lot of videos to educate myself prior to tackling this job and I've seen too many people just slathering lap sealant over top of lap sealant and ending up with a huge mess and I will avoid that and apply just a good bead of proper sealant on my flanges etc. I'm a bit of a handyman and try to service my equipment myself, I've watched a lot of your videos and learned a lot of procedures and tips, I think the roofs of RV's are the Achilles heal of these machines because unattended leaks as you know can put your vehicle in the grave. Thanks for your honest reply and thanks for sharing your valuable and professional demos that I'm sure have saved many people money and time.
That's a lot of dicore lmao
Yeah that is how you use it
Where is the best place to look for a skylight. My 2005 Fleetwood Terra 26y seems elusive to find the right size.
Check out the video where I replace the one in my Beaver from a few weeks ago! I give details where I got mine from
@@AZExpert Found it on the last page. Not the cheapest but it should fit and that IS important:)
I love watching your videos because its the thing I do everyday for my job as a camper RV tech. You tell it how it is and reveal your secrets, Its like being back in class. One question I have is that there is another R.V. vlogger who states about the lapseal that " the only one who puts more on is a MORON" without giving an alternative. I know lapseal doesn't last but I'm not sure what else to use other then lapseal.
I watch his channel too. Truthfully, lapseal is not necessary. Many high end buses and class B units don't use lap seal because it's ugly. Its main purpose is to re-direct water. The real alternative is making sure the component is secured and sealed underneath. Besides, "repair tape" or ecapsulated roof coatings(spray on roof) I'm not aware of many alternatives. The youtuber you reference builds custom roofs with "curbing" which is a raised flashing that "redirects" water so it doesn't need lap seal. Thank you for the encouragement and support. I'm glad you enjoy the channel!
Thanks for all your videos and shared knowledge.
We just bought a 2018 winnebago micro minnie 2100bh travel Trailer and we need to change the Skylight on top of the shower. Which sealant do you recommend?
Thank you very much in advance.
standard dicor self leveling or similar works on tpo and rubber roofs
@@AZExpert Thanks
Interesting. Thanks for the video James. Happy trails!
Thanks for watching!
Dang .... I think I am going to have to change a skylight .... Off to climb onto roof again
Oh no!
Thank you for the information, I purchased an older RV that does not have an inner liner and the skylight appears to be installed from the inside of the shower. most likely by the previous owner. is an inner liner necessary? can I install the new skylight on the outside of the RV where it belongs without an inner liner? If an inner liner is necessary how do I find the correct fit for the newly purchased skylight? thanks.
An inner liner is not necessary and can be difficult to find one that fits. It's nice to have one as it reduces condensation on the inside of the exterior lens but more and more fewer inner lenses are installed by factories. If a skylight manufacturer offers an inner panel, they will give the dimensions of the hole it fits into. Yes you can install the exterior, the main conercern is to make sure it does not leak water into the roof. There are a few skylights that do install from the inside and I do not trust those. Thanks!
You must get so tired of scraping putty and caulk. Thanks
You got that right!
Very nice install....thanks
Thank you.
What brand and type screw did you use?

@@AZExpert thanks for the quick response. I notice looking into my roof screws protruding particualy where coax and wires are present. Would 3/4 be better than 1"?
Ok, crazy idea. What if you sprayed the skylight with clearcoat spray paint to extend the life of the skylight? You know the stuff you use on headlights.
I think it could be done for sure
Many new applicable maintenance type coatings available now. 303 comes to mind. Polycarbonate products used in small aircraft and such. Use em when inspecting the roof. Yearly, wink wink.
Just discovered your channel. Thx for advice
Thanks for watching
just watch another or your video's, which are great. you said not to use dicor?
I think the only videos I would say NOT to use dicor is on Winnebago roofs. Winnebago uses a silicone sealant and dicor won't stick to it. It can be very confusing for sure. Thanks!
@@AZExpert thanks, if i removed all caulking when replacing vent for bath room and installed new shower outside dome.( used correct caulking, sky light) is docor ok to use. 2002 winniebago. also just removed and cleaned roof axis and used proflex clear. can i apply another coat on top after it dries. i don't know what you charge for that but it's not enough. took me 8 hrs. to remove clean old caulk and caulk. just one side. Thanks
A can of flex seal could have avoided all of this before it got to this condition
I'm not sure flex seal could fix that. but thanks
@@AZExpert I was suggesting that before it got to the state if someone had kept up with it years before it started cracking and chipping away
I’m surprised you left the butyl tape ?
I try to resist letting the perfect being the enemy of the good. Dicor will stick to butyl and the roof, trying to remove all the tape and sealant could rip or damaged the membrane.
Hi one Cuestion what kind of sealant to you use?
I used the supplied butyl sealant under the skylight and Dicor self-leveling lap sealant on top. 501SLW. Thanks!
@@AZExpert good to know now I know that, is a shame here in my town don't have it, I guess need to cross the border to a couple.
@@angelrvbajacenter5047 It really is the most common of RV roof sealants. Just make sure that it is self leveling.
@@AZExpert I buy one on Home Depot was a a caky crap same number now starting to clean up but is rein ass hell.here in tijuana Baja tomorrow cross the border to get that sealant. Make me wish hehe
Should smell mildew inside
not usually in AZ
Very helpful. Thanks!!
Youre welcome
Another perfect repair.
I don't accept perfect, it was acceptable. But thank you!

I don't know why. Thanks!

I do not enjoy cleaning off the radius either. As far as the bathroom vent, no matter how hard you try, unless you sand it, there will be a thin film of the nuflex factory roof sealant and the dicor will not stick to it. I would strongly recommmend using nuflex 311
