Places with a zero hygiene rating aren’t necessarily that unsanitary - you can get a zero just for filling in paperwork incorrectly/late, that’s why they’re actually still allowed to be open. It’s the ones with a 1 rating that you really need to watch out for, because they’re really doing the bare minimum.
I heard that even without the sufficient paperwork as long as your place is fairly clean, you'll still score say 2 or 3. But the paperwork aspect definitely affects the score independent on the cleanliness.
A local place I used to order from got a 0 because they literally had pictures of mould on the mixing machines…still trading to this day Edit: They got a 0 in 2019 and gave up trade in 2022 so correction not still trading to this day
Total myth. Paperwork is 25% of the score and honestly? I want to know that your staff know to wash their hands between raw meat and anything else, and that you know when you opened the chicken!
Bibimbap is lovely! Bibim = mixed, bap = rice... aka. mixed rice! Carrots, spinach, courgette, mushrooms, beef, egg, cucumber... whatever the ingredients are... they vary a lot. It's topped with a spicy red sauce, containing gochujang (Korean spicy chilli pepper paste), which is what you were given in that tiny tub. It's a dish that originates from Koreans mixing leftover rice with leftover ingredients (stir-fried vegetables or meat) and sauce - which isn't that spicy once mixed in - so it can be eaten cold or hot. The larger tub, as someone pointed out, is miso soup, which is served with their rice dishes, hence the 'sediment'.

Food hygiene doesnt really have much to do with how nice something is to eat. Chances are that zero rated places are because they couldnt demonstrate process is being followed during inspection, such as labelling food, demonstrating separating cooked and raw foods, etc. Places that serve higher risk foods such as meat and rice also have to meet a high threshold, so it makes sense most of those places sold those foods. Places that are just disgusting with rats running around and turds all over the kitchen are just getting shut down on inspection.

I went up to London the other week (probably the 4th time in my whole life) with a few friends. Went in a burger restaurant (not like a burger chain) cost about £25 each for burger chips and a cocktail. Not too bad for London prices I suppose. Really in helpful in friendly staff and to top it off they put a £10 surcharge on the bill! Never heard of that before. Got them to take it off and they glared at us till we left.😂😂 did that ever happen to you in London Ed? 😁
The 0 for Mr Whites will litterally be because of that burger, they will serve it like how you would serve steak and have it pink in the middle. The issue is if they do this then they are using mince not made on site and the health inspector deems that as a potential source for bacteria. GBK suffered from this in my town (Bolton) and rather than fight this they just closed down. The reality is, if the mince meat is fresh that they are making the burger with then its fine, you aren't going to get ill eating it.

It's not always the quality of cleanliness and food preparation that they score 0 on, it can also be failing to follow procedures, not wiping down the sides when switching from preparing different proteins etc or if they have no precedures in place to document hygiene procedures
Mrs worked in school catering for 18 years, one year the school built an entirely new kitchen, but failed to provide a large enough boiler to provide hot water to the school and the kitchen, they ended up with a zero rating, the school blamed the catering company and shortly after removed their contract.
Good stuff lad 👍 would like a more in-depth analysis of several of the dodgiest dishes rather than so many places if you were to do something similar in future.
Some places will get zero rating because their kitchen book isn’t up to date with recorded temperatures of cooked food, Fridges, Freezers, Delivery temps that sort of thing.
Usually after getting a zero rating, establishments make rapid improvements. So your experience may depend on how much time has passed since the zero rating was “awarded”. 👍🏻
The rating criteria is awful used to be 3 stars for cleanliness the other 2 come from paper work my aunt owned a cafe cleanest place I’ve ever eaten from and she got 4 stars because she didn’t have 6 months of paperwork she was only open a few weeks before inspection
If you are too busy to do a walkround with them when they turn up unannounced, you automatically get a zero.... which is what i would expect happened with most of these.... you should review 1 star places.
At least in the EU not sure in the UK anymore, chicken are vaccinated. Unlike in the US, getting sallmonella is very unlikely (at least in the continent) . Japan takes it a step further at eat it raw, they call it chicken sashimi.
Going to places with the lowest customer ratings would make more sense if you're gonna judge purely based on the quality of food. It's not like you're checking out the conditions in the kitchen. Bad food hygiene raring doesn't say much about the quality of food. Greasy spoon cafes look awful but the food often tastes great. Please take this as a suggestion, not a criticism. You realise a zero rating just means they have not submitted any paper work, so they are unable to get any other rating. You could be eating at a place that is fine kitchen wise but they can't get any other rating till they submit paperwork lol

Burger place close to me did burger and chips for £1.50. It was later closed down for mouse droppings in the kitchen. Cracking burger though.
