This particular airplane SX-DAD has quite an interesting history, including having been hijacked once in the 60s. Its career continued until 1986 and it appears to have been in storage since.
You really don’t need to mess with the throttle like we do in the jets. You can keep the BMEP gauges around 80 with flaps 40. If you fall below the glide slope, reduce the flaps to 30 until you’re back on line. If you then get above the glide slope, go to flaps 50 to bring it down.. all without touching the throttle. It’s a bit of a balancing act. Really quite an incredible design feature since the piston engines don’t like lots of throttle changes. Glad you’re enjoying the airplane, though. It is quite a bit of fun learning to navigate the old fashioned way!
Purchased this on release day. Had a quick chance to load her up into MSFS. Just had to listen to those engines. Sadly gardening and family put paid to getting airborne. I was really chuffed you had time to show us the DC-6 in all her glory, thank you. Huge respect to the PMDG team… simply stunning!
In the tutorials the PMDG person said that they were planning to add the smoke effects on engine start. Also the flap lever loks like the beak of a duck or goose.
Downloaded this today and flew earlier in VR with my GTX1070. And it was fab, good FPS (which for me on that GPU is 25 and up) and very impressive. Love it.
Excellent demonstration, professionally done. Aircraft is so well presented and I love flying it. Will try an ILS approach next which is very well domonstrated. Well done.
A really excellent video, so nice to see top quality add-on aircraft starting to come out! One of the things I love about this channel is that while you are an Airbus pilot and do so much teaching about how the A320/321 works, you're also not afraid to fly the 737-200, 757, A350, the 787 like in your last video, and in GA the Piper and so on- I guess the principles of flight apply whether you're in a Piper, this DC6, or a modern jet like the A350 / B787.... Keep up the good work, and give the FO some Dreamies for me :)
PMDG has 19 tutorials on this thing. About half done watching them, next thing I knew is I bought it.. 🤣🤣🤣 It is study level and something to goof with and enjoy. I didn't crash the second time I flew it...... Amazingly well designed...
Great plane, great first impressions. It really is crying out for a Padday/Manta livery! Really looking forward to getting my teeth into this one and some future livestreams! Many thanks 👍
Great video mate! You're very easy to listen to and very informative. I bought the DC-6 last night and spent an hour trying to get an engine started but to no avail. I followed your method exactly but my engines would start under the boost pump but would just cut out after 5 seconds. Presumably this is fuel not working but I tried with the fuel leaver both lean and rich. Cheers
Flew in one of theese in the 60' as a boy home from charter vacation in Italy. The crew could not start one of the engines and ran up and down the runway and used wind to get it going. We had to bord , engines running and a man became quite hysterical and demanded a parachute. Very upsetting if you are 9 years old. Came home in one piece, though. Feel old though looking at the technology.
Love the dc6, a few of them here at my home airfield (FAGM) and a few dc4's, one still flying ! Lots of cats at the airfield too, they must like the radial engines ? Haha
love the level of detail on an older aircraft :) looking forward to there 737 ive heard they are working on. was the registration a nod for fathers day? lol
Quick question mate. If the engineer is controlling the throttles, where do you put your physical throttles? Do you leave them at idle? Half way? Full throttle? EDIT: @40:00 I think you answered my question. It doesn't matter where you have your physical throttles as the Simulator takes full control, locking you out. When you take out the engineer you get full control back. This is genius. PMDG knocked it out of the park, and across the continent with the DC6. I'm blown away. They have firmly moved the goal posts, and put all other developers front and centre. There can be no more excuses now about the SDK.
Hi Chris thanks for watching. You are absolutely right, it locks out the throttles so it doesn't matter (whilst using the engineer). However I try to put them in roughly the right place for the phase of flight incase I turn off the engineer and forget. I agree they have done a fantastic job!
When the effects system arrives with the Xbox release I am really hoping PMDG is quick to add the smoke to those radials. The smoke and angry growling is what makes watching these monsters start so cool.
PMDG added a video for energy management on final. Go and have a look I think you'll find it relevant. I think you should have been more like 110 @ flaps 50 on touchdown.
Had my first flight in this b autiful aeroplane today. I think I broke the link to the gyro-pilot at some point as couldn't turn it off! Really looking forward to learning this one in lots more detail. Thanks for another great video which helped tick a few questions off the list!
I think the touchdown speed speed is around 100 - 110 knots. And I never seen prop reverse on taxi but always after touchdown. Taxi would be ordinary pushback. In those times there were ramps only so the planes would have the “gate” on the left side and did not need pushback.
Believe it or not full flap of 50 is to be set for landing. Other than that nice job, it's a lot to take in for sure and im sure after a few flights you will be ahead of thr curve
Hi Mark, it is on the far left of the front instrument panel just below the clock. You can see it during the approach phase, it is a relatively modern instrument. Hope this helps!
You usually have aradial engine runnign at about 1000 rpm when just sitting on the apron. Also you do not idle a radial. it is really bad for the engine. Also the really bad vibrations is called harmonising. This damages the engines really badly.
You can click on the coin-like button between the red and blue lights of the giro-pilot to center the turning-knob... They did not show this on the tutorials-video's of PMDG(?)
I've tried it a few times now in tutorial 1, I don't know what I am doing wrong but I have only been able to get to get it to lock onto the Localiser and follow the ILS once. I dunno if the tutorial is weirdly worded, out of order, its missing something or if something is bugging in the sim or if I am missing something but after you do the descent and do the turn to HDG 020 it just doesn't re-engage when you switch the Gyro back to Localiser and the CDI needles just stay and don't move. Even if I force it to turn and head over to the airport following the track on the GPS and the CDI needles show it it just doesn't capture, even if the GPS is set to VLOC with the correct frequency active, have the AP set to Approach and the needles are moving about on the CDI.
@@shinkicker404 thanks, are they just written pdf tutorials or any interaction in the SIM itself? The UA-cam tutorials by PMDG are very helpful and well done.
@@tanberjan yeah, but there is a couple errors in it they need to (and will) fix. For example In the descent phase for tutorial 1, you kind of need to leave the GPS on until just before HIPRO, then switching it to VLOC to capture the ILS, but it makes slowing down harder… I’d say you want to descend to 2400 feet, rather than 4000 or whatever it is and use as long as you can to slow the plane down before the final approach (plane doesn’t have spoilers, so need to use flaps and engine power). Also, the GPS can be a little buggy to capture an ILS, need to press the CDI button to switch back to GPS and then back to VLOC again to make t work.
Till the official replay comes theres a free addon for replay that you can download. You then press record to capture your landings/etc. That's what he is using.

As these planes are scrapped and flown less and less, it's nice to have digital archives of them.

PMDG are world class with their modelling. I loved the 737 800 & 900 in FSX. Payware but worth it.
Their DC-6 is mostly just eye candy. No realistic piston engine modeling. A2A is the best when it comes to radial engines.
