Yes! But what I find most fascinating lately is that the pure Carnivore diet is catching on among a few pro cyclist. The idea is that when one feeds the body no carbs or sugar the body becomes far more efficient at releasing energy from fat and the liver actually starts producing all the glucose the mussels need. Now there are cyclist doing a hundred miles or more in 4 hours or less and doing it with out fueling. I wonder what Oli would think of that?
I’ve lost 22kg in the last 9mo-ish since starting cycling more seriously. I’m not starving myself at all, still eat all the things I enjoy, and my mental health has never been better. My average resting HR is down 10bpm, my VO2 max (per my watch) has gone from ‘poor’ to ‘above average’, and I’ve dropped two dress sizes. It’s honestly changed my life. I’m so happy I’ve found this sport ❤️
I was a keen cyclist when younger, commuting to work, but as you get older with family etc the cycling took a back step. But at the age of 56 I got back into cycling whilst living abroad, now at 62 I feel and are fitter than ever. Keep up the great work guys...😊
After giving up smoking, going back to cycling in 2021 after a 35 year lay off is the best thing I’ve done health wise. I’m only riding a Brompton but managed 1500 miles last year and 160 so far this year. That and 4 x 15 min dumbbell sessions a week has me feeling stronger and fitter at 59 than I felt at 40. Can’t wait for spring and some miles in the sun!
My grandad lived to 94, he used to do time trials before WW2 in a dinner suit (for aero) & cycled Perth to Sydney on his 70th birthday which took him 6 weeks. He only stopped cycling a couple of years before his death, as his knees couldn't take anymore of the North Yorkshire Moors, which he enjoyed.
I've heard that the Garmin approximation of VO2max is close to accurate. Mine at 56 is currently at 54 which I'm happy with as a regular but casual cyclist
I just registered for my first race. I am competing in the Iron horse bicycle classic in May. Two mountain passes 47 miles almost 5000 feet of elevation to climb.
Thanks Conor , Dan and crew...my mental and physical health have improved greatly due to cycling !! I am OAF , used to run and had to stop due to injury . Cycling has helped me get the therapeutic benefits I felt I got from running , and the fitness is coming back slowly as well. I would say both add to my life expectancy , and overall well being !
Citing from 2019, "...grip strength is largely consistent as an explanator of concurrent overall strength, upper limb function, bone mineral density, fractures, falls, malnutrition, cognitive impairment, depression, sleep problems, diabetes, multimorbidity, and quality of life."
Hmmm. Never had strong grip. Trained it. I can dangle from one arm for 5 seconds at 100kg. I think it's not consistent, just usually. Because grip strength up to a point reflects general health. Or bad health. Up to a low level. Above that you got bear paws vs spider fingers. Even among people that workout, grip ain't usually trained much.
Grip strength is also important to catch one self when falling and holding on. Imagine you are old, brittle bones and you fall at the top of the stairs. Being able to hold onto the railing will save you from falling down the stairs, which might save your live or a broken hip. Breaking a hip at an old age is long way of recovery and thus you will lose a lot of exercise, hence decrease in VO2max, muscle mass, strength/power. It might sound like a silly example, but these accidents happen more then you think. Of course when balance and lower body strength are in check the change of falling will be very slim and the change you can catch yourself with your own legs is of course bigger in the case you do fall/lose balance.

Can we pause for a moment to honor the achievement: in the intro to this, the 578th GCN show, they have finally succeeded in finding Wally/Waldo! Chapeau!
The first bike in Hack/bodge. reminds me of an ice speedway bike. Minus the engine, good design and about 500 spikes in the tyres. So the bike doesn't fall over when almost flat on the floor. I could be wrong about the number of spikes.
My favorite pastimes are cycling, skateboarding and rock climbing. I think I have all 6 of those markers covered. Now if there was only a World Champs for that eclectic collection of sports I might win a medal.
The Parisian SUV levy isn't as reported here. It is an additional charge for SUVs driving in to central Paris from other areas. Parisian registered vehicles are exempt and pay no more, whatever their weight.
When I was 20 I was racing DS and DH, commuted 40 miles a day on my bike and my resting heart rate was 30, Doctor sent me for a scan on heart suspecting it was too low etc did VO2 max I scored 79, Told I was super fit.. I stopped cycling for 14 years and gained alot of weight 120KG started Ebike mtb and dropped to 108 kg in 2 months plan to get to 90kg as I'm 6"4 (50" chest bones) and now my resting heart rates 43 average (Garmin tracking), Cycling is the only sport I enjoy and I love it, a lot of my family members are in the cycling industry, some of them are on professional teams ( I won't say which) but it's clearly in my DNA. I think that cycling is an amazing sport no matter the discipline and the health benefits for me have been very clear.

Sorry to bring up the sadness of GCN+ being cancelled, but like others I am in withdrawal missing the great cycling movies you created. Will they be available to purchase or going to a parent company channel? This collection deserves to be available to cycling enthusiasts everywhere
I’m an American and I could not agree more, concerning the giant SUVs. There are specific times and places: Families with lots of kids and lots of outdoor toys, Sports teams, cycling trip guides. My mother spent summers on an island in Lake Huron and would pack everything she needed, including several dogs. However, most of the time, here in Denver, you will see one person in an SUV designed to carry 6-9 people, commuting to work. I would love to see my metro area embrace this sort of tax.
Wait, yet another new bike category, snow bikes? MTB, road, cyclocross or gravel frame? Obviously with subcategories for packed, powder, slushy snow & ice. Wondering if a front snow prow would help.
GCN should try to find out whether Vingegaard owns a finger guard. If so, I for one would very much like to see a photo of Vingegaard's finger guard. Similarly, if Tadej Pogačar happened to have an Italian olive bread in the shape of a cuddly toy, it would be great to see a photo of Tadej Pogačar's teddy focaccia. I doubt he'll have a delivery company in the near future, but if he does then a photo of Van Der Poel's van depot would be amazing. There must be more of these, any ideas?
The secret of a longer life is reducing Resting Heart Rate. To reduce RHR, some strength exercises to raise the HR temporarily should be done. Overall, your average daily Heart Beats should reduce. Nevertheless, a health body is built in the kitchen. "You are what you eat"
Is the 1.6 tonne limit only applicable to SUVs? Seems arbitrary since most electric cars weigh substantially more than that. How is weight correlated to parking? Surely dimensions should be a better corollary for parking charges... I mean, I cycle to work so does not affect me, but love to know the French thought process on that one :)
It may be down to the particulates that heavy cars produce, this can cause poor air conditions and more pollution. It can be a tricky subject to tackle - how do you think they should make Paris a greener city? 🇫🇷
Basic physics: heavier cars need more energy to move. Smaller cars emit less. They also require less material to build. Also, larger/heavier vehicles are much more lethal when colliding with pedestrians and cyclists, and smaller vehicles. The increase in SUV and "Light truck" numbers can be blamed for the sharp increase in pedestrian casualties in the last 10 years. Also, they take up way too much public space. We didn't need these 2-ton tanks to move our families 20 years ago. Why do we need them now? (answer: has to do with car manufacturers profit margins...)
@@francoisdemers1203 ok, and how are energy to move and lethality of collisions related to parking fees? Also, 1,6 ton is a pretty low bar. Even in its most basic configuration MB C-class doesn't fit it. 20 years ago that would be true for average D or E. From this perspective the initiative look more like in favor of most produced Renault Clio and Peugeot 208 From personal consumer POV i don't really care the cars grew from 1,2 to 1,6 tons. Liters per 100 are still better now.
Which way? Based on his pace up the stairs, Ollie Bridgewood is either going to live forever, or we really need to get as many videos out of him while we still can! 🤔
Show Suggestion: Even though GCN+ is no longer showing races I think it would be advantageous to mention races coming up in the near future. Thanks for listening.
I fell while trying to mop up a liter of very expensive Italian olive oil, I was cooking and knocked the bottle off the kitchen counter, didn't want it to pour under the kitchen cabinets, so I threw off my shoes and started mopping it away from the cabinets, but somehow I slipped and cracked my skull a bit on the Italian ceramic floor. I was OK for two or three days, but then the brain damage caught up with me and I had an epilepsy fit, luckily someone saw me going blue and pulled out my tongue I swallowed.... then I spent about three months in hospital without knowing about it, being fed through a needle, then I was not allowed to drive a car for almost a year and I had to go about 15 km away to buy 50 kgs of dog food for my Spanish Mastiff girl dog every other week - I did that on my road bike (with a very heavy backpack on the way back up a hill) and I never biked more than I did that year, I was not allowed to drink either, so up to 170 kms every other day, lots of it up the hills it was.... Now I'm not suggesting for anyone to crack their skull, but somehow it did wonders for my cycling form, I've never cycled that much and that fast before or after! Seems you have to lose a part of your brain to be a really good roadie :)
Yeah that 300min is not the point going more is even more beneficial the 150min guideline is because there's diminishing returns above it. You can also get similar benefit from harder effort with shorter time. So you should treat the guideline as it states a minimum of 150min. Anything above that is also beneficial but the further you go you get less benefit for amount of time spent for longevity. And grip strength is a proxy so training grip won't have the benefit wed want 😊
i went by a lone Simon Richardson from the UK on Zwift the other day. I have another name from your sister channel and this Simon did not seem to notice me lol
The prevalence of SUVs is an interesting case of unintended concequences of green laws: the US passed emissions laws. They exempted some vehicles intended for agricultural and commercial us, primarilly based on weight. Car makers built vehicles that were larger to take advantage of the loophole. The rest of the world followed the US trend...
I wish they would just do the right thing, and require a commercial truck license in order to be allowed to drive anything that big and heavy, and require that they only be used for commercial purposes.

I'm not an athlete (I'm 170cm and 90kg), but I spend manny hours on a bike, either commuting or working. When turning 50, I decided to have an ECG taken and as the result was coming out, the lady asked me rather surprised if I was a sportsman: the ECG results showed 48bpm! Blame it on cycling!
Charging extra to park bigger vehicles is discrimination and unfair unless they provide bigger parking spaces. It could also put prices up of products that need 4x4 ( me driving a defender as I'm a bee farmer)
I'm going on a cycling holiday soon and have hired a bike the same as mine. I've suddenly realised that the headset spacers are much higher than I have on mine and the handlebars are a lot wider. I've contacted the bike shop and these can't be adjusted. Do you think it's better to still rent that bike, or take my own and pay to take my bike on the flights? Both are roughly the same price but hiring is easier

And grip strength is a proxy so training grip won't have the benefit wed want 😊
i went by a lone Simon Richardson from the UK on Zwift the other day. I have another name from your sister channel and this Simon did not seem to notice me lol

And then I told POC it looked very Earow.
But I don’t think they could ear me.

It better, I've banked everything on cycling being the thing that keeps me going into my 90s!!!!
Keep it up 🙌

#captioncompetition It was all smiles on the set of the new Power Rangers reboot.
Agree with you about slow walking driving you nuts. I think everyone has their own MSS - Minimal Stable Speed. Anything slower than your MSS is really uncomfortable, awkward and irritating!

12:30 - Tell GCN Tech, this is what a crossbike looks like. There've been some recurring questions, why those aren't discussed.
The QUAILTY of my friends has improved since I’ve been cycling as well.
Quality over Quantity, I’d say.
Awesome! Cycling saves the day once again 😉 Will you be keeping the pedals turning then?
Of course! It comes with the job. I'm a bike tour guide 😀
Caption contest: “are those aero helmet real watts or augmented reality watts we talking about here?”
it is a real pity the app does not show that hack/bodge voting percentage -- it made it so much more interesting.
Can y’all maybe record some new footage to show when you mention ‘commuting’? The same clip of Si is getting quite old! Love the GCN shows!
What video should we make about commuting do you think?
74 vo2 max??!?! What lol that's beyond epic. According to Garmin watch mine is 51 at age 40.
So the first GCN branded camel bak bidon is a water bodge-le ?
Creased clothing? It's challenging when you have to pull brand-new tops out of the packaging minutes before recording the GCN Show.
We think someone better buy an iron 👀
Charging extra to park bigger vehicles is discrimination and unfair unless they provide bigger parking spaces. It could also put prices up of products that need 4x4 ( me driving a defender as I'm a bee farmer)
Who’s lost more vo2 max in a decade, Chris Froome or Dan Lloyd? That would be interesting
You can't lose what you didn't have much of to start with though 😂
#captioncompetition it is ok, Connor knows I borrowed this.
I think hack/bodge has done its dash.
As someone who walks fast, like Dan i do get annoyed with people walking slowly. I can`t stand getting caught up people hiking slowly.

Is the short bit of footage from Berlin at 4:13 from a specific GCN video? As a Berliner, I would be interested in watching it.
Here you go 👉 ua-cam.com/video/CxNtWo8thF4/v-deo.html - We love Berlin, its an amazing cycling city!
I musst have missed that video. It was fun watching Hank riding along places I know so well. Cycling in Berlin really isn't for the faint-hearted...
Still waiting to learn, since GCN+ went away, where I can watch cycling in the U.S. (Preferably without Phil Liggett and Bob Roll.)

-Harder,- Better, Faster, Stronger
I'm going on a cycling holiday soon and have hired a bike the same as mine. I've suddenly realised that the headset spacers are much higher than I have on mine and the handlebars are a lot wider. I've contacted the bike shop and these can't be adjusted. Do you think it's better to still rent that bike, or take my own and pay to take my bike on the flights? Both are roughly the same price but hiring is easier
Ah the two former pros. Need a video on pro cycling stories from Lloydy and lanky Connor. Would be very interesting to see them reminiscing on their days in the peloton.
That could be fun! What stories would you like them to share? 👀
Lloydy is just as lanky!
@@gcn any moments as a pro riders fun stuff or hard times. Just want to see from their point. Always you see the "super stars" yapping about their time racing and training. Would be nice to see the perspective of the "water carriers".
@@JonCannings oh noooo Connor is the lanky of the two😁
