I think also a true friend 1) is honest without being cruel, but is constructive in criticism, 2) is happy when you experience joy in life. At this time, I have a teacher at a Buddhist temple and my husband and two cats as true friends. There are a few workmates I consider friends in that venue, but the friendship remains there.
