Love when you are grinning ear to ear when a song just hits you just right!
Oh yeah! 16ths? Drummer is steady! That bass is on speed! Oh the brass! I love the original singer! This guy is great! Tight! Thank you for taking me back to H.S!
That dude with the red 'fro was kickin' his own ass up there...😃 Great dancing & top musicianship.
Lenny Pickett
Tower of Power has long been the bomb. I was fortunate enough to see them live in a smaller venue several years ago. They did not disappoint. In fact, for me they really have no direct comparable. Though Leonid and Friends, our fantastic America touring Russian band of marvellous musicians is way up at ToP level as they serve incredible renditions of various standards from Chicago, EWF and ToP etc. A high compliment for sure but check for yourself with a mirror handy so you can watch your jaw drop.
One of the baddest jams in the land.
They'll be in Fresno Oct 11th 👍
Back in the 70s... jeez, what am I, a historian? Not at all. But, back then there were at least four notable bands with incredible horn sections. Tight horn sections! Chicago, EWF, BloodSweat and Tears, and of course, Oakland's very own Tower of Power. I've only seen them live one time. So amazing. If you get the chance to see them, do yourself a favor. Nobody does music like this today.
I am so glad to here that They hit you up, and gave you a Thank You. By the way, That is just them being Them. It has not changed over all these years. My High School, & collage day's back in 1969/72, my band spent so many hours at our parents house learning there songs, funny we had a great line up of covers from Rock to soul genre, and it was the top 3 that always got the crowd rocking, James Brown, Tower Of Power, and Jimi Hendrix sets that was our go to to wake up the room. Thanks guy's and yeh, T O P is still going strong. They have lost a lot of former members over all the years that they have been around, There sound has Not wavered not one bit. If you are in a room, and someone is playing there music and your NOT moving? Your DEAD, STONE COLD DEAD. someone call the Corner, Body Bag please. 👍👍👍
Now we're talkin...maybe the greatest funk band of the early '70's...TOP
Chod, their sax player, Lenny Pickett plays with the SNL band every week. For years.
I second Rod below on the fabulous Leonid and Friends- the greatest Chicago tribute band on earth!
I love WAR, Tower of Power, Heatwave, and Earth Wind and Fire ✨ great video Chod
Average White Band
Great songThe horns are beyond awesome! Try “So Very Hard to Go”.
They are still touring. I love their tune Sparkling in the Sand
Saw them live...great
Pure Talent! Not like today! 😎👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
They do a 180 with You're Still a Young Man. Great song to slow dance to. Another good group with a horn section is Chase. Give Got to Get It On a listen. Guarantee you'll love it.
All these dudes are world class, but that bass and trumpet is just.
Their instrumental "Walkin' Up Hip Street" is my favorite.
Tower is the BEST. Check them out LIVE concert backing Little Feat "Spanish Moon"...a great sample of Little Feat w/stellar Lowell George....in Atlants.
Great song so talented was this band!
one of the greatest Horn Sections of all time
Everything about TOP was great but that's the Greatest Horn Section of All Time
That guy dancing gets me every time.
Great great great!! This is like watching the glorious evolution of big band, rock, latin, and soul all rolled into one.
I love this performance. Great song performed by great musicians. So the dancing sax player is Lenny Picket who went on to become the musical director of The Saturday Night Live band. I never got to see TOP however I got to see the TOP Horns performing with Huey Lewis and The News in the 80s. Some vids of that tour out there. Thank you for this reaction.
Saw them at The Roxy in the 70's, they brought it. 👍❤🤙
Straight fire !
T.O.P. today being up there in age did a remake of this song. They renamed it 'What is Hip Replacement '.
Some of this band are some of the original members. But the saxophone player who did the dancing, Lenny Pickett, has been the leader for the SNL band for for 37 years.
They did appear on Soul Train.
They are known as having the tightest horn section in the business. Check the dance moves on the sax player with the big hair!
Tower of Power! Takes me back!
I saw Tower of Power in 1970 in Oakland California. They absolutely ripped the roof off the place
I'd like to share a cool story.... In 1972, my senior year at Saint Francis High School (Mountain View, CA), an all boys Catholic school, our senior class produced and sponsored a concert in our gymnasium, of course we invited the all girl Catholic school down the road to join us. We had three bands on the ticket, the headliner was Stonehenge, the second band was Tower of Power (Oakland, CA) and the warm up band was the Doobie Brothers (San Jose, CA). The tickets cost $6.00 and the concert lasted 4 hours. If you like Tower of Powers genre, then I know you will really appreciate this band as well. Cold Blood: ua-cam.com/video/sDuqavv511I/v-deo.html
How lucky!! Bay Area music rocks!! 🌉
These guys are at the top of the food chain!
TOP have been doing it for over 50 years now. The tightest, funkiest band you will ever hear. Still a Young Man is a great one to check out. Take the lady on a road trip and check them out Chod.
Chod's right Dee - the energy just keeps on going with Tower of Power. I saw them perform in Toronto (1970's) and I couldn't sit still - so much energy, amazing music and Lenny Pickett dancing his legs off!
Ace band for a very long time....Funk, Jazz, Soul...you name it - these guys can do it.
They are awesome live. They are also very loud! Big sound.
50 years of excellence... that's it.
He Chod, if you like the sound of this, you'd likely like *The Screaming Headless Torsos.* They have a lot of live videos online and would probably welcome the promo, being jazz fusion.
Dee- you’re looking at the early 1970’s here. Yes, it’s old but timeless!
That brass section was in high demand by other artists, especially by Huey Lewis and the News...
Yeah great back in the day a good family friend of ours took us to Oakland and we got to hang out after hours and jam with these Legends yeah I got to play drums at Tower of Power dude can you imagine that s***? May I now must have been only like 13 years old though yeah my brother goes to play some guitar and played some drums lots of fun
The dance moves are more reminiscent of James Brown than MJ.
She can Dance to it...weeeeeeeeeee😂
You still haven't heard why the song is legendary until you hear their original studio version with original lead singer Lenny Williams. It's at a slower, much funkier tempo, with Lenny's kickass vocals.
You HAVE to hear Yoyoka's cover of this. Unbelievable.
That sax player can dance!
You'll like drums and percussion. 😎
Can't even imagine what type of physical condition you have to be in to perform this way and at this level. Absolutely amazing!!!!
This is one hell of a band. One of the original members was the guy selling all the steroids in the 90's to the MLB players: BONDS,SOSA,CANSECO,McGuire etc.
OKAY!!! Now you just have to do Tokyo Groove Jyoshi’s cover of this!!!
Jazz baby!😎
Always remember what's hip today might become passe!
Thanks for reacting to this TOP classic! Next up,for a change of pace, please react to their masterpiece, " You're Still a Young Man".
Omg, not surprising you liking this, please do this track no one ever recommends of them, “Boys of the Bay” this one is another banger, pure horns, you would love it. You are funny, so defensive “What do you mean old??”🤣🤣🤣
Watch the Blues Brothers movie.... the horn section from Tower of Power are the horn section of the band. 😎
The original studio version is the best IMO. Check out "Clean Slate" as well by TOP.
They were all coked up in this version. Tempo too fast. Lenny Williams was the man, and you can catch a live version of this on Soul Train.
You don't think those guys were high, do you? (smile)
Check out Brian Seltzer Orchestra...insanely good!
Hate to nit pick, but it’s “Brian Setzer”
Chod, for your request, a reminder ... Shania Twain, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, even the Pointer Sisters. Great music and a "sighful eyeful".
You need to listen to TOP's You Can't Fall Up
Chris Issac - Wicked Game, original video. Send the kids to the grandparent's first.
can you do a reaction to Brand New Morning by Bob Seger
T.O.P. is from the Bay area so they play out there a bunch.
Break out the bros in afros and bring on the FUNK!
King's X - Over My Head. :)
Oaktown Funk Masters 😎
Oakland's OWN
Chod, you don't live in Colorado do you? After watching you reaction, I noticed that they are playing in Denver this Friday. I am really tempted to go.
Get the Back to Oakland LP. Soooo hot.
How did you like that little drum riff?
"It looks old" Come on now, you have to get past that.
You're forgetting about "Hot For Teacher."
Energy? Believe me, they were fueled by coke.
MJ was a child then
Back in the day, Tower & Cold Blood were the two hot acts from Frisco ua-cam.com/video/s_S4rDwVBl0/v-deo.html keep up the great work! J.
Coked out
From 1977 or 76, not the original singer but still pretty good version, Lenny Williams was the original singer.
I think its Michael Jeffries in this video. He was their third lead singer after Lenny and Hubert Tubbs.
TOP is my favorite group of ALL TIME... This video does this great song NO JUSTICE! A horrible video...
Heres the lamest sentence i ever typed, back in high school we played this in marching band.
I don't think you've ever reacted to the original recording. Not digging this lead singer at all. "You're Still A Young Man" is a favorite of mine because of the horn lines and lead vocals.
you switched to small insert of artists, and interrupting videos. ????????? !!!
Tower of Power always sucked live because they always played their songs too fast, and the singer Lenny Williams left the group and they guy they replaced him with sucked (the guy on this video). LISTEN TO THE ALBUM VERSION OF THIS SONG, NOTHING LIKE IT!!!
It's not David Garibaldi on drums, otherwise it'd be funkier. DG left TOP a few times and their sound totally changed, even with Rocco still on bass.
That's live. Couldn't get any tighter
