If you have a routine shot sequence, and a concrete aiming system, you can shoot a recurve or a longbow very accurately. And so, this video is for you. You guys that are out there that have always carried a compound bow into the woods or a crossbow, but always wanted to try a recurve or a longbow. This video is for you, those guys that have been struggling for three to five years shooting a recurve or a longbow instinctively, but are frustrated with your accuracy. This video is also for you guys that have or own a recurve or a longbow, and every spring you tell yourself "This is the year I'm going to carry a recurve or a longbow into the woods." But come August, you're not satisfied with your accuracy, and you fall back onto the compound, and the cycle continues. Well, this IS the year that you're going to carry your recurve into the woods. There are a hundred different ways to shoot a bow, and this is just one of them- a full aiming system that will help you shoot your recurve and longbow accurately. If you are completely satisfied with your shooting abilities with a recurve or a longbow, then this video is not for you. But if you want to be able to accurately shoot your bow within a short period of time, then this video is for you, and enjoy.

I am 65 years old and have been shooting, off and on, casually since I was a young teenager. I learned more about archery by watching this 2 hour video than the sum of all I have learned over the last 50+ years. Thank you for putting this video out there for folks like me who enjoy shooting a bow but haven't done the in-depth research to enjoy it that much more.

@multiculturehead yep and having to search the internet for the info being from one old no longer updated site of older persons info to the new people using recurve/flat Bows due to how they are on the beginners side for a good hunting bow, cheaper then the lowest good compound bow, a Genesis bow or specific Barnet bow-fishing bow without the bow-fishing parts on it.

I'm in the UK, been an archer for 18 yrs, learned more about this subject/passion of ours watching this vid, than I have going to archery clubs here in all that time. I am now a traditional shooter and independent of clubs in England (they only care about Olympic style target archery, I couldn't even shoot an English longbow at my last club). This is like a breath of fresh air, I will watch this vid until I can recite every word! I'm glad I brought up your UA-cam Archery Movie, It has shown a distinct difference to the competitive side my wife and I were trained at our local club (this stopped completely when my wife condition worsened 15yrs ago) We went the usual route 2nd hand Alum riser Recurve Bow, and then found such freedom with our mainly Osage mix 40,45,50# 73" Longbows, with occasional Agincourt distance clout for fun, so we would have enjoyed what might be called in this country "Field Archery".

I am blown away by the Fixed Crawl. I have been shooting/hunting traditional since I was 14 years old in 1999. I always have shot instinctively. Back then, I would shoot 4-6 hours a day, all summer long, and could drop three arrows into a red solo cup at 30 yards no problem. Then came adulthood….At 23 I started traveling for work and my accuracy took a dive as I wasn’t able to shoot no where near as much as I had in previous years. I was shooting ‘just good enough’ and was able to take a handful of deer over the years. Recently, the last 3-4 years though, with a demanding job, family obligations (wife/Kid) and other numerous hobbies, I found myself unconfident of my shooting abilities. I have even been considering going with a compound but the allure of trad archery has kept me from it. I tried gap shooting but found it inconsistent and would inevitably switch back to instinctive before season opened. Then I found this video. Within an hour I was dropping 3 arrows into very tight groups at 30 yards. I haven’t shot this good in years and am amazed that I was able to increase my accuracy so quickly following the steps outlined in this video. I have found that I am instinctively drawing and my arrow is almost perfectly where it needs to be when I settle into my anchor. If it isn’t, I make the slight adjustment needed and the arrow goes where I want it to. I am beyond thankful for the detail put into this video and only wish I had found it sooner. Thank You!

This is just phenomenal. I started shooting a traditional bow when I was just a kid, and now I find that I am an old man of 50. A while back, I embraced the fact that I just don't make the world's greatest instinctive shooter. When I found out about string walking, I was eager to try it out. I clearly needed some way to aim rather than just pointing and shooting. What got to me about string walking was the fact that I could never seem to get an arrow to fly beautifully, the way a correctly spined arrow should. Walking up and down the string, changed the weight pushing behind the arrow, and therefore the arrow spine. Being a real stickler for perfectly spined shafts, I was about to give up and stick with instinctive shooting. Then one day, about 12 years ago, I began to realize that if I just drew from the same spot on the string BELOW the nocking point, I could exert better control over the trajectory of my arrow; far more so than when I was shooting instinctively. I started calling this "modified string walking", and even began to write a book about it. Needless to say, I abandoned the book a long time ago, but I've continued shooting that way ever since, and I am elated to find somebody else using the same method. Great job, brother. Keep up the good work.

I went hunting mule deer bucks in Northern Utah in August and bagged my first buck using this method. I ranged it at 29 yards, my limit was 30 yards, the broad head went right through its heart cutting it in 3 pieces. The broad head was a Badger, single right bevel in 125 gr. Thank you for producing this video and creating this method!

Instinctive archery is the absolute best, but it takes not 100's, but 1000's of arrows being shot at all sorts of distances. But once you start getting good at it is almost a spiritual experience with your intention and laser-like focus on your target being the only way you "aim". It is the most natural way to learn how to hit what you want, but most people do not want to take the time to do this. But if you have the patience to learn this way you will never gap shoot or string crawl again.

    • @Buran01
      @Buran01 5 років тому +4

For a lot of people is not matter of "want", but of "can". I can only train in the archery club, 2 days a week, 5 hours in total, at most. Should I stay mediocre for a few years, risking to lose interest in shooting, or should I take advantage from a method which is faster to learn and works?

As someone who has been shooting since 9 years old, this is my simple recommendation.
Start with a recurve. No sights no counter balance. Learn to aim by feel.
Get the feel of where the arrow shaft is pointing to, imagine the arc the arrow might travel, how the arrow might drift in the wind.
Putting the dot in the circle on compound bows does not develop the feel of aiming.
It's like learning to write with a keyboard and monitor rather than pen and paper.

I started shooting a recurve a couple of months ago, partly to reconnect with my brother who is a bow hunter. And apart from the added benefit of spending more quality time with him the past 2 months than we have had in 15 years, I must say the community is really awesome and supportive. I went to a 3d shoot out and people were just having fun, enjoying everything, and giving me advice since i am clearly a novice.

I too am a beginner Recurve Archer and randomly found your Superb video.
I think its very important to understand the theory and you explained/demonstrated this so well.
Now I understand gap shooting and finger walking in relation to point on.
I cant wait to try these methods out and don't have to watch any other poorer videos.
Thank you very much for your brilliant tuition. Take care.

I cannot thank you enough for this video. I haven't shot my bow in probably a year until I stumbled across this video. I was so intrigued by your method that I broke out my bow and gave your way a try... WOW.. Having not shot in over a year and I was instantly more accurate than I have EVER been. My son was watching and yelled "Whoa!... teach me!" And ran and grabbed his bow. Again, thank you so much for rekindling my love of traditional archery!

I grew up with a small recurve my dad bought me. Heck even when I was very small I was shooting squirrels in the back yard with suction cup tipped arrows. I moved into wheeled archery when I was 18 and have killed at least one deer a year with a bow except one year when I could not seem to get a shot to save my life. I'm currently 54 and still do 99% of my hunting with a bow of some sort. I recently got a really sweet setup from a great guy who set me up with one of his machined risers and some uukha limbs and his custom strings. I am currently building some arrows and getting in some finger tabs and a few other accessories so I can shoot it, but I'm super excited. I've had a few nice recurves in the past, a Zipper being one the better ones but had no one to show me much back in those days. This video is truly a wealth of knowledge and although it is a bit long, it is very detailed and thorough. I learned a lot and look forward to giving this a try. Thank you for taking the time to put this together!

This is a superb movie, even if you are simply diving down an archery rabbiit-hole on an otherwise boring weekend. I have learned enough from this to feel sufficiently confident to go out and buy my first bow, and arrows, and begin practising in the next door field, all alone, miles away from any club or instruction. I do believe I can do this, and who knows; maybe in year or two take a wild pig. Thanks for the effort of filming and editing and making the movie, and uploading it for everyone and anyone to learn from. Superbly done, muito obrigado from Portugal.

I'm glad you said that about the need for skill at the end there, - I'm against hunting but I'm not going to screech on about that. However, - the bloke who left the comment above yours SAYS himself that he almost literally cannot hit a barn door from 20 paces yet still feels ok about shooting at wildlife. Thanks for appreciating that skill is a necessity for both you and the things you intend to hunt.

Im teetering on the bubble from my Oneidas and Trad gear and selling all of my wheel bows for good. I found this video, a couple weeks ago and, finally, decided to watch. Thank you!!!! I've been hunting with a compound for 11 years. A few years ago I bought a Bear recurve and tried my hardest to figure it out. But, to my demise, it went into the closet. Too hard to learn and quite frankly, it was a pain in the ass, not having anyone who knew what they were talking about.. About a week ago I decided to dust it off/ re-wax the string and go with the GAP method ( after watching Clay Hayes). Once I got a couple of arrows tuned, I noticed, right away, that I was getting tighter groups. But, this whole fixed crawl idea, sounds like the cat's pajamas. Two dedicated point on spots......who would've guessed?!?! I can't wait to get in the backyard and get this thing dialed in.

in 1925 a Penobscot (Panawahpskek) Indian chief (Northeastern USA and Canada) invented an adjustable draw weight with a "double bow" system. To this day, many Penobscot Indians use the 'Penobscot bow'. I am a traditional archer who makes his own bows usually with Red Oak or Maple wood. I am also Kalinago Indian (Northern Venezuela and Guyana through the Lower Antilles Islands and up to Honduras). Making your own bow has always been normal with my people. for thousands of years. I have made many Penobscot type bows that I adjust from 40 to 95 lbs by twisting the secondary bow strings.
    I have enjoyed your presentation.

The key to all this is. you have to know the distance to the target to utilize all these methods of aiming. Can't do that, you can't aim. However; you can use a field laser range finder. The downside to "Gap" aiming is not only do you need to know the distance to the target you have to try to figure out what lets say 25 inches is for your gap. What does it look like at lets say 30 yards. With "string Walking" all you have to know is the distance to the target then slide your thumb down a predetermined distance on your tab. IF everything remains the same it should always work except for human error Great video by the way.
