    Impressive background music. I dig it.
    Kind of an Aphex Twin vibe.

    Very informative, I worked with distribution install for over a year and put up a lot of these on poles. never actually saw what was inside. thanks for uploading.

    Glade I found this how it's made channel by accident today. As a rule all one need do is examine the number of turns and gauge of the primary (50k+vac) and secondary windings to ID large or small step down transformers like this one. The thickness of the copper on that secondary winding tells us why this transformer can handle a great deal of amps having an standard output voltage of 240/120/240 VAC.

    Beautiful demonstration & it is educative too ! I am also an Transformer Engineer .

    Interesting vid never knew exactly how these were made. It says ABB (thing for chance and hubbel power systems i think) at 1:20. 1:50 must be the high voltage winding. 2:49 those might be for different taps. 2:58 very interesting sheets of metal.

    But when they blow and needs replaced, What causes them to blow and what actually blows in them?

    • @lumberwhack6294
      @lumberwhack6294 5 років тому +3

      Jack Schissler could be any number of things that causes a failure. But the reason they blow is because Something happens within the transformer to raise the temperature above around 335 degrees f and the mineral oil combusts. A lot of times it’s either lightning that overloads (though they are supposed to be protected from that) or a failure in the insulation that causes the hot and ground leads to connect causing an arc and a surge in temperature.

      Transformer failed due to numerous reason, but the most common is overheating due to imbalance load in secondary windings, internal leakage causes short circuit, oil breakdown, etc.

      Transformers almost never blow. Very one saying they have seen one has prolly just heard it. It’s the fuse exploding.

    • @christopherleubner6633
      @christopherleubner6633 2 роки тому

      The most common failure is lightning damage that causes some of that secondary winding to burn and short circuit. Next it starts arcing and overheating, if it goes on long enough the top pops and a green flash from vaporizing copper followed by flames occurs. The internal guts has a circuit breaker that senses these problems such as arcing, over temperature or load imbalance, especially in bigger ones.

      Typically the transformer never blows up. The fuse might blow and that could look like the transformer blew. You will see the door upside down in the cutout if this happens. An arrestor might explode(seen exploded ones before but not one exploding) which probably came from a lightning strike. Sometimes the transformer itself might blow if it has a damaged winding or overheats. Heard a story about an exploded oil filled device.

    I'm surprised that they use a thermoplastic material for the insulating bushings. I'd think a thermoset material would be more appropriate where it might have to withstand heat.

    Worked for colt industries making these in the 80's alot of the people and friends i worked with have had cancer and or died the factory closed and moved to pine bluff ark. The entire area of old closed factory is contaminated with signs all these years later :(

      tribulation138 PCB (Polychlorinated Biphenyl), commonly use as a coolant in older transformer. Health effects that have been associated with exposure to PCBs include acne-like skin conditions in adults and neurobehavioral and immunological changes in children. PCBs are known to cause cancer in animals

      old flouro light ballasts were also containing PCB's. I saw a project in Australia where they replaced all the lights in hundreds of Telephone Exchanges. Ballast removed and put in sealed drums. Dangerous stuff.

    • @ElectroTree01

      It says 14.4kv and I am unsure if that is phase to phase or phase to ground. The transformer is configured in a wye configuration.

    Transformer single phase only

    • @klafong1
      @klafong1 7 років тому +9

      Three-phase pole transformers are rare in North America. Three phase service is provided using either three transformers (wired WYE or delta) or two transformers (wired open-delta).

    • @imadewn
      @imadewn 5 років тому +2

      Single-phase transformers in bank configuration is perfectly fine for 3phase load as long as it has the same impedance

    Soo when you start bitching about how high your power bill is...just stop and think all of the cost it takes to bring electricity to your home..from building transformers ..power lines..power poles..substations..line men salaries..payment collection clerks..maintaining billion dollar power plants..the millions of dollars it takes to dig the coal needed...and for nuclear plants all the uranium and plutonium needed..the cost for smart meters..and in areas that dont have them the salaries of meter readers..the cost for the vehicles and the maintenance of the line men's trucks and meter reader vehicles...
