- This year is all about sharing who we are ⚡️
This means we are celebrating the achievements of everyone who is part of Lightning Bolt’s history and life.
The Lightning Bolt ambassador, iconic surfer and shaper Rory Russell is a living legend who won several world-class surf championships including two Pipe masters. Known for his surf performance back in the ’70s and ‘80s, Rory also made a name for himself as a worldwide iconic shaper, especially by shaping one of the most emblematic Lightning Bolt surfboards ever!
We feel honored to be able to revisit and share these stories, in the first person, by Rory Russell.
Here’s to fifty years of history: a golden era. And a lot more to come!

I just came across this and Gerry's version.....we moved from Cali to Hawaii in 1973, when I was a junior in HS, and already being a surfer (Jalama Beach), it was like dying and going to heaven. Lived in Ewa Beach, just down the way from where Rory talks about learning to surf. Lived about a block from the beach. I managed to befriend some local haoles who clued me in on how to stay alive in that very hard core (back then) sugar cane town. Now my gorgeous old neighborhood is basically a slum, and the cane has been replaced with endless condos and golf courses....Some of my best memories, other than surfing Lanis, Kammies and Pupukea with my buds, is watching Gerry and Rory out at Pipe at first light, having the place all to themselves, and later that day a set which turned into a full spread in Surfer Mag with my best bud sitting on the beach in the foreground. Could not have been there at a better time in history. Also had the legend Iggy (RIP) personally shape me a 5'10" twin fin fish which still graces my wall to this day. From then on I had lightning bolts on all my long skateboards in college back in Colorado, and would of course have to explain the history of that to friends asking where it came from.....so very blessed to have experienced these guys and the Country in general back in those incredible days......now we are all old! Love you two guys forever!!!!
Classic!
so stoked to have been a part of that era . I still have a bolt board sitting in my garage right next to my aipa stinger. 58 years riding waves and still going. The stories these legends can talk . Listen to them while you still can.
Rory england would of loved you.. keep on truckin.. bro.. surfin is highs and lows .. 😂. Respect from.. oz 💦❤️❤️❤️
If I can be half as stoked on life as Rory at that age I'll be a happy man. His stoke level is out of this world what a legend!
I had the chance to talk story with Rory twice as he was waiting for an inter island flight. Super nice and friendly guy, full of aloha.👍
I was lucky enough to be on the same G-Land trip as Gerry in 1982. He sat next to me from the flight from Honolulu to Singapore.
Excellent, great stuff. I remember taking off at Pipe and having Rory yelling for me to GO! Great memory. It's always a late takeoff😂
One word...... legend!!!
Rory is all time!!
When I was growing up surfing, Rory Russel and Lopez were are idols.
Love it Rory 🏴☠️❤️
What a humble great guy. Keep having fun Rory😎

Used to ride my bike from Hawaii Kai the the LB shop on Kapiolani Blvd in the 70s. Rory was always so nice to us kids. Amazing guy

@Angieboy173 me too, but I look like my father....haole 😊
Great interview ! I was a surf photographer on the NS from 75-80, saw Rory often at Pipe. Never got to meet him, wish I had.
Those were the best days Ever...
Classic Rory,I'm 60,that was the best era of surfing no doubt😊
Amen brother.. had to re-watch and write down some of Rorys quotes. He touched my heart.. people dont smile enough
My first trip to surf pro in Australia my mom wanted me to have a chaperone. She loved Rory so he was the logical choice. Rory was like Eddie Haskel. He treated my mom like a queen & he could do no wrong in her eyes! He did keep an eye on me but I snuck off when he was out with Arty (Art Brewer). Rory is one of my favorite persons & lites up a room when he walks in! As Louis said below, Rory will treat you like an old friend on your first meeting...Class Act...Mahalo Rory...All love. Mahalo 'Junior'
These guys are connected. I’ve never seen much talent in Rory. Met Jerry Lopez, Morgo olberge , and Rory rustle at Boynton Beach Florida civic center in 1980. Surfing has been my life. Was in the water in Oregon and Jerry Lopez paddle board killing it like a pro
Love the Rory talks. had posters of him and gerry on my wall
Feeling good !!!!! Aloha!!!!
Man, good juju there, I needed that, thanks!
Pavones ...with Buttons..now that was a moment in Time...
Back in the old days, used to read all the surf magazines and interviews and articles, comments and stuff. I remember a few of Rory, he talked a lot about Gerry, Gerry was a great influence, I think he had a good effect on Rory Russell. I remember seeing pics of him Gerry and I looked out for anything of Reno Abalera I think his name was. There was never enough on Reno, I thought his style and what he did backside was awesome. Reno was rubber man, Gerry was Mr Cool. The coolest most fluid timing I ever saw but there were a lot of vids with Gerry Lopez, some Australians were equally fluid and cool, like Nat and especially Bob Mactavich.
Riding Lightning!!!!!!
Rory and Gerry walked behind Julios Pizza to talk to me because I had painted the waves on Julios front. That little encounter is to this day among my favorite memories.
You thought I'll be landlocked😂
Classic rory. Aloha
Hey Rory, looking more like Keith Richards every day.
Good partys at the Trade shows.....
