My Dad shaped and glassed a homemade surfboard for me in our garage and I learned to surf on that sad sack of a board (sorry Dad, love you, you tried). So I bought my first ‘real’ surfboard from the Lightning Bolt shop on Kapiolani Blvd in 1971. 7’0” rounded pintail shaped by Bill Stonebraker. Cost $120.00. Orange bottom and rails, red pinstripes, white deck, orange bolt, glassed in fin. Beautiful work of art! Ridden mostly at Ehukai, Pupukea and Gas Chambers. Also at Populars and Makaha, before it was stolen from inside my car at Pokai Bay, Waianae many years ago. I missed that board dearly, may the surf gods wreak ‘bachi’ on whoever stole it! 🤙🏽

Whe I was young I remember lightening bolts that were made by Tom eberly,that were pure beauty! The best around at that time one of Mt neighbors at marijuanas,north shore had the most awesome eberly bolt,still remember that board,pristine craftsmanship single fin.fact

Great interview ! I was a surf photographer on the NS from 75-80, saw Rory often at Pipe. Never got to meet him, wish I had.

These guys are connected. I’ve never seen much talent in Rory. Met Jerry Lopez, Morgo olberge , and Rory rustle at Boynton Beach Florida civic center in 1980. Surfing has been my life. Was in the water in Oregon and Jerry Lopez paddle board killing it like a pro

My first trip to surf pro in Australia my mom wanted me to have a chaperone. She loved Rory so he was the logical choice. Rory was like Eddie Haskel. He treated my mom like a queen & he could do no wrong in her eyes! He did keep an eye on me but I snuck off when he was out with Arty (Art Brewer). Rory is one of my favorite persons & lites up a room when he walks in! As Louis said below, Rory will treat you like an old friend on your first meeting...Class Act...Mahalo Rory...All love. Mahalo 'Junior'

Back in the old days, used to read all the surf magazines and interviews and articles, comments and stuff. I remember a few of Rory, he talked a lot about Gerry, Gerry was a great influence, I think he had a good effect on Rory Russell. I remember seeing pics of him Gerry and I looked out for anything of Reno Abalera I think his name was. There was never enough on Reno, I thought his style and what he did backside was awesome. Reno was rubber man, Gerry was Mr Cool. The coolest most fluid timing I ever saw but there were a lot of vids with Gerry Lopez, some Australians were equally fluid and cool, like Nat and especially Bob Mactavich.

I had the chance to talk story with Rory twice as he was waiting for an inter island flight. Super nice and friendly guy, full of aloha.👍 I was lucky enough to be on the same G-Land trip as Gerry in 1982. He sat next to me from the flight from Honolulu to Singapore.

Rory and Gerry walked behind Julios Pizza to talk to me because I had painted the waves on Julios front. That little encounter is to this day among my favorite memories.

so stoked to have been a part of that era . I still have a bolt board sitting in my garage right next to my aipa stinger. 58 years riding waves and still going. The stories these legends can talk . Listen to them while you still can.

I’ve surfed since 1976 with OP, WRV in Va. Beach. I even was lucky enough to get a Simon Anderson Thruster in1983! The Hallmark was Lightning Bolt ⚡️ I surfed on the Marine Corps Surf Team and then the Navy Surfers came in from Hawaii and talk about a Wipeout! Bolt’s Rule! ❤

I did a couple years on the North Shore and then went to Outer Islands. I met Rory Russell he was always very 😊pleasant and happy to see ya.

In 1977 i was a Pearl Harbor submarine sailor. One of my shipmates was a Kaiua hometown boy. The boss told him "Why dont you take him and teach him to surf?" We went to Haleiwa one morning. Gerry showed up with some guys in a 72 Chevy Blazer K5. I couldnt paddle and couldnt surf. I cut Gerry Lopez off on a wave. The guy like disowned me because i cut Gerry Lopez off. I was from Alabama. I had no idea who he was
