I was best friends with Steven and was with him the day he was kidnapped. We walked home from school all the time together as he lived close by. Even though I was only 7 at the time I still remember his mom calling my house looking for him after school. Merced was a safe town were kids would play and be kids. This changed that forever on that day.

      Mr. Masterson,
You were blessed to know the real Steven Stayner so blessed. I watched this movie many years ago and also in more recent times and I found it very very moving. What was Steven really like. I would have loved to have met him. How sad it was that he died so tragically young.

It's the California legal system, which has a history (specifically more recently) of very lenient sentencing guidelines for some rather heinous crimes. I never understood how he kept getting off either. It's not like he was a wealthy man with power, connections and access to fancy lawyers. I think that he always just had public defenders. So I think he just lucked out through the years with easy going judges.

The laws regarding kid fucking are simply nowhere near as severe as they need to be now 30 years later, and were even more atrocious back then. MOST kids won’t talk about it, and NONE wants to testify in court. Can you imagine the humiliation of a 14 year old boy, newly sexually mature, telling a room full of reporters, your family, strangers that you got raped repeatedly for 7 years? Thats why Steven is a legit hero. He wanted a book, he wanted a movie, he wanted to tell his story to save other kids who were being held captive and manipulated like he was. Its insanely courageous, and he got beaten up over and over again at school and called a “fag”.
Sadly his life ended early. Wish he could have lived to see happiness. Even more shocking js that this kid, nor his family had ANY therapy or meetings with any counselors at all. I mean, I know it was the 80’s but JFC, if there was ever a time...
I think life in prison, or castration works for me.....if you’re caught raping a child. Chemical castration is very easy. No expensive surgeries.

  • @Clara-ph7my

This movie was very well documented. Steven was such a brave soul, to have gone through all of this from such a young age. He dealt with so much trauma, from being kidnapped and made to believe his parents did not want him, sexual and emotional abuse. Steven seemed to start realising things were not quite right with his so called new Dad in his teens. This was when Steven could invite friends around to smoke and drink. His friends thinking Steven had a cool Dad but Steven could see the sexual advances being made towards his mates.
When Parnell snatched the second child, Steven was so courageous to help that child by taking him to escape and going to the police.
Going back home must have been like living with strangers again. Steven was used to living an unruly life with no boundaries. He must have been dealing with so much hurt, anger and grieve inside. It is so sad that as much as he tried to get on with his life and supporting his wife and children, Steven was still struggling with his own demons. So much had happened to this one person in such a short time of his life. RIP Steven.

Corin Nemec was a young actor at the time and he was nominated for an Emmy and he should have won for this TV series. Always tell your children about Stranger Danger and don't trust people and always be aware of your surroundings. This was not Steven's fault and he was only 7 yrs old. This story is so sad b/c he died and so did Timmy White and there was no happy endings and Cary Stayner became a serial killer. Steven's children are doing well now that they are older. Steven Stayner will always be a hero.

Just when you thought Steven Stayner story couldn't get any more tragic, he passed away, a mere 5 mos after this video clip aired, on September 16, 1989. Apparently, the motorcycle he'd been driving on his way home from work, was involved in a fatal motor vehicle collision. Steve was just 24 years old; a married father of 2 young children of his own.

I remember this story, because my folks and I and some of my relatives were in Napa that day, when we got the news on the radio, that Steven stainer and Timmy White had been rescued, and saved, that Steven, was actually the hero! I'm sure Steven's story has saved thousands of lives if not more, and make people more aware, to be really careful, watch out, and try and bring the children back home! That was Steven Stainer's goal, bringing kidnapped children back home, alive and well! Saving children's lives! Protecting children!

Arliss Howard, he also really did a very great & a very excellent job portraying Sex Offender-Pedophile, Kenneth Parnell!!!!!! That is too bad & that is also a shame that he, Arliss Howard did not receive an on-screen credit and/or was uncredited for his portrayal of Sex Offender-Pedophile, Kenneth Parnell!!!!!! John Ashton & Cindy Pickett, he & she both really did a very great & a very excellent job portraying Steven Stayner's Parents, Del & Kay Stayner!!!!!! I had just found out & I had even noticed that in real life, John Ashton & Cindy Pickett are both old enough to be The Late Steven Stayner's Parents!!!!!! I totally know what it's like to be an eight-year-old boy being molested & that going on for five more years. What I can't comprehend is all that & then a brother being a serial killer. That's because many things in life a person has to actually go through it to fully understand it.
I do know, the time this vid was filmed, the mother didn't know what the other son was up to. He was a serial killer. We all know that Steven died young & we see old vids of him talking about things but I believe at the time he died, he wasn't well enough to care so much if he lived or died. It takes a long time to get to a good point after years of sexual abuse but you never get over it. Steven didn't know his brother was a serial killer yet he might have suspected something was wrong. One thing is for sure, those parents might seem sweet on cam but if reality matched that, they wouldn't have had one son getting in a car with a stranger & another ending up as a serial killer. Something was BAD WRONG in the biological home too! As to other kids, it might have seemed okay but I know a bad home when I see one from a distance. Steven's home was ROTTEN. He had rotten parents.

Having just rewatched the tv series recently after years of first hearing stevens story (and now that I’m 24 myself), this is also the first video I’ve seen of Steven as an adult. Sad knowing that just months later he’d be dead. His life was tragic.
He only had 7 normal innocent years with his family, got the same amount of years taken away from him after that plus sexual abuse, and then had a hard time readjusting to life back with his family and classmates. He never had a normal childhood or teenage years. I’m glad he was able to get married and have kids before the end of his life, but he deserved so much more time and should still be here with us today.
    RIP Steven Gregory Stayner
