Really nice reaction. Very well put. Over 50 years later and the sound of her voice still has me fighting back the tears. So sad to lose this beautiful woman and her heavenly voice at such a young age. Her singing penetrates the soul and pulls on the heartstrings of the listener like no one else. RIP KAREN.
You've got it! Real talent can appear so effortless. Karen and Richard make everything look so easy. That's the beauty of the Carpenters. No showing off, over-singing, or wearing provocative clothing to distract from the beauty of their work. Just pure talent on display!
Karen Ann Carpenter was America's Sweetheart in pop music history, Karen was an American treasure along with Patsy Cline. Karen was to pop music as Patsy was to Country Music. Two voices that will never be matched.
KC's voice was the melody and harmony in almost every song, including this one. Her brother was a brilliant arranger. He recorded her harmony voice and recorded it along with her melody. Her 'voices' made them famous. Someone here commented she was 84lbs in this video. I dont think she was quite emaciated until a little later. I believe her voice wasnt quite the same (although still amazing) after 1976 due to starving herself, etc. However, her voice, to this day, is the best female vocal ever, in spite of her sickness and early passing. Amazing
The one and only sounds of The Carpenters, they are so unique and their sound is iconic!!! I absolutely appreciate your analysis of this song & your reaction to them as a group!!! Simple but yet complex...However, smooth to the bone nonetheless!!!
Hi beautiful! I’m a bit late watching this video. But I have to say I’ve never seen you review an artist with such conviction. I could never have said it as beautifully and as poetically as you! When I listen to Karen Carpenter I just melt. The first note, the first word and it’s all bittersweet. I always wonder what more she could’ve recorded had she not met such a sad and tragic passing…
Hi Frank, thanks for your comment, much appreciated. Here is The Carpenters Playlist on the channel for you to enjoy when you have time. Psyche 🙋🏽♀️ 🤗 🌹 The Carpenters: ua-cam.com/play/PLWQGjnqwg9JJ-9sJe2_7YFn2MASN9eUUv.html
Psyche!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You hit on a pet peeve of mine, just a brilliant comment. I was thinking, as I was watching that, were the Carpenters to appear on a talent-competition show today, they wouldn't win. Know why? Because the music isn't egregiously maudlin, overly embellished to the point you don't know what the melody is, and climaxing with the I-can-sing-a-higher-louder-note-than-the-other-singers finish. I have a degree in music. One thing I learned was that the best musicians and/or singers made everything they performed/sang sound effortless. What a brilliant comment. I like watching drum-cover videos, and something a drum instructor said stuck with me. He said he wasn't of the school that promoted crazy swinging arms and flying-high sticks (as if the drummer were on something). There is no necessity for that to make the music work. It's a show and the problem with videos is that a lot of people just don't listen; they get all hyped up over the performer's moves, not the music. My major was trombone and one thing I've read consistently in the comments (many from trombonists) when watching a video of my favorite, Urbie Green, was that he made things sound effortless. He would play in the trumpet range and sound almost like a flute. Ever hear a singer get her voice all annoyingly pinched to squeeze out a high note? My favorite version of "Do You Hear What I Hear" is sung by Carrie Underwood. The arrangement sounds nothing like any other arrangement, whether it's from Mannheim Steamroller, Celtic Woman, or any other sublime group; it's much more interesting, in terms of harmonic progressions and cadencing. And Carrie Underwood has this gorgeous vibrato and hits the notes right on the money. So what's my point? Well, there's another artist who blows by Carrie, in terms of singing in the stratosphere, as if she could do it in her sleep and the sound contains no pinching. She's done a lot of Broadway and is classically trained for opera, though I don't typically like the overly bellicose heaviness of sound from most opera singers. She floats right into pop with a huge range and seems to be able to hit any note anywhere, with no effort. Kristin Chenoweth is the singer, but I hate the arrangement. But you hit on such an important thing that so many people never got with the Carpenters. When I was a kid I'd have debates with people who hated the Carpenters...not exciting enough. Really? I know where these people went; they're the ones who send in the votes to talent shows in which the loudest screamers win. Now that's exciting...but I don't want to listen to it. Sure, that's a cynical generalization, but I've always gravitated to beautifully constructed arrangements and perfectly on-pitch singing when, all put together, the result is deceptively simple. Sorry for the long comment, but your remark is quite on-point about how sounding simple is a product of sublime application of Richard's and Karen's respective talents.

The Carpenters were the most talented brother/sister musical duo on this planet and will never be matched.
