Just as in base 10, there isn’t ever a 2 carried over unless we are adding more than 2 numbers. The highest digit in base 5 is a 4 and 4+4=8=13base5. Similarly, 9+9=18. So, no opportunity to carry more than 1 unless adding more than 2 numbers.
It doesn't make sense to me either. If you had that many apples in 2 groups, it's not going to equal the answer in base 5 or base 12. For context, this is the first video I've seen on adding using the diff bases
