Outstanding James, I share these with my students. One thing about Mendez and Lip Slurs, as an official old guy I heard Mendez several times back in the last century and he performed at our H.S. in the early 60's. He did use some of the Walter Smith Lip Flex exercises and taught some Schlossberg In his clinic. Breath attacks, pedal tones, a marvelous approach to practicing. Thanks for doing these on line, keep swinging!

The tongue channeling the air speed has always interested me. My teachers have used the word focus rather than tension. Bad tension usually refers to tense chest or neck breathing or excessive mouthpiece pressure. I have a question about lip slurs. Have you ever thought about the different ways in which to practice lip slurs, i.e.: precise movement between a lower note and a higher note without bumping one in the middle, fast sweeping slurs over a wide range, lip trill excersizes, etc?

Haven't spent too much time on other exercises as of yet. Currently I'm working to get the basic "Flexus" routine under my belt before venturing into some new drills. Thanks for the suggestions and comment!

I need to learn to recognise notes by ear and name them. A video or resource for that would be good.

I always have trouble with lip slurs, I can’t do lip trills at all. I figured out why, it’s because with my embouchure, I smile instead of like retracting the lips. I’ve been doing this false technique ever since I started which was about 4 1/2 years ago. I’m trying really hard to learn new muscle memory to fix my issue but when actually playing or soloing I subconsciously forget what I practice and end up smiling again. Do you have any tips/exercise that can help fix my embouchure? Btw great vids!

Do what you can do without smiling; do it slow and give it time. You're re-training the nervous system and it just takes awhile. Also, don't worry about what happens when actually "playing." Those new habits you're developing take time before the overpower the old ones.Could take 6 months, maybe even a year or two but it will work!

Mr. Blackwells, What is the best way to build endurance without having to go too high on the trumpet?

Practice in shorter chunks (10 minutes at a time) with lots of rest. You can figure out a good feeling for playing that way.

Vibrations have "frequency" not "speed". Also, it is the state of the lips by tension that determine the frequency of pulsation, that is, the frequency of the tone. Air speed, anywhere, has NOTHING to do with it. And the tongue arch does not increase the air speed through the aperture. Not that it matters.

I noticed tongue arch doesn’t seem to speed up my side ....my trouble seems to be when I tongue my flow from note to note become in stable ...I have to breath attack my notes using much air and trumpet resistance to smooth my note to to note play...can anymore help me?

There is ONE thing that determines the frequency of vibration:
    1. Lip posture ( or lip tension)
What does NOT determine pitch played:
    1. Air speed or velocity. ANYWHERE.
    2. Air pressure.
    3. Air flow
    4. Tongue

Hi Darryl. Thanks for your comment. I have learned that the aperture tension plays a much larger role in playing than I had previously thought even just a few years ago. That misunderstanding is something reflected on a small number of videos and articles. Hope the rest of the info in here is of good use to the beginner, and I'll have to make a correction one of these days. Take care and be well, James
