People often forget, that the area called the "universe" in Dune is just a tiny slice of our galaxy and the vast majority of the galaxy is largely unexplored.

I would’ve thought with Fold Space technology traditional borders would be irrelevant. The Empire could include systems close to our homeworld and at the edge of the visible universe. Travel time isn’t the limitation, the ability to explore the endless void is the limitation. The Spacing Guild is known to know of world’s beyond the Imperium’s knowledge that rogue houses can hide on for a price!

I’ve read all the Dune novels but that question never comes up . I don’t know if that question was ever asked of Frank Herbert . Maybe he just purposely excluded aliens from his books . Maybe he just wanted a human only universe story with humans only interacting with other humans.. we can speculate anything from humans have stopped other intelligent aliens from ever evolving to them hiding though that seems impossible. Or that it’s early in the universe and will evolve later..

When I first read through the Dune books I at first thought the great enemy of the Honored Matres that drove them out of the Scattering into the Old Empire may be of alien origin or the two strange characters, Daniel and Marty, who try to ensnare Duncan Idaho’s No-ship. Daniel and Marty, however, seem conclusively to be Face Dancers - humans. I suppose the great enemy could yet be alien, but Frank Herbert’s concern and focus was in humanity and I think the catastrophe, the typhoon struggle, that Leto II saw in his vision that lay ahead for humanity was more the titanic struggle for relevance and continuity for the human race, (aside from the creation of the ultimate Hunter Seekers which was nullified by Siona’s no-gene) a war against stagnation and death from a lack of evolution, and this I think was ultimately achieved through the explosion of potential that was unleashed by the Golden Path. If anything, maybe the Dune chronicles could be looked at as the origins and spreading of intelligent life throughout a universe of infinite possibilities with humanity becoming an originator species that spawns countless “alien” life.

@manwithnoplan5496 there's several things that point to it, though Herbert never came out and said it. First of all, there hasn't been enough time for the worms to evolve between when it was a wet oceanic world to the one we know. Also the worms are deadly allergic to even small amounts of water. Lastly they are so reliant on the exact environment of Arakis, they can't be transported to other worlds. If they could evolve so quickly on Arakis then they should also be able to adapt to other worlds.

I remember reading long ago some bits from a Dune Encyclopedia that was being written by Frank Herbertz son. In there it is said that in some planets explored and even colonized by mankind artifacts and ruins were found but no live sentient aliens. Also what was found was extremely ancient from even before mankind existed. All of these things eventually went to the Bene Gheserit for study and preservation and the rest of mankind is mostly completely oblivious and/or uninterested in them.
It is also suggested that the BG study concluded that these civilizations had reached some sort of milestone or peak in their development and then became instinct so fast that they didn't even recorded what caused their extinction.
This all falls into the lore of the BG seeing a coming darkness from within the galaxy that will wipe out mankind and the reason why they started to manipulate the bloodlines to try and produce the messiah super being with the vision to see the danger and would save mankind and lead it in a golden path into the future.
The nature of the coming darkness is also unknown. It could be a resurfacing of machine intelligence, a plague, an aggressive sentient alien race, etc. It's also suggested (and seems to be the original thinking of the author but never written) that the darkness is caused by stagnation. Civilizations evolve until they become too satisfied with their lives and comfort and by doing so become weak and a crisis would come and they would be unable to surpass and survive it.
The Butlerian Jihad saved mankind from destruction and came about because humans became too dependent and complacent on machine intelligence.
i don't want to enter into spoilers but i suggest people read more than the first novel. The more you read the more it will make sense.

I also wondered about this. There are really just two possibilities; 1) there are no aliens, or 2) there are aliens but they are few and far away, and humans have just not expanded enough to encounter them. When I read the last book in Frank Herbert's series they talked about the distant colonists returning, as if they were running away from something they encountered. What is that? His soon took it and made it about sentient machines, but I doubt that was the original intent.

@@jmgonzales7701 I get what you're saying. In most of the entertainment, the aliens generally behave like humans, or like animals. Why is that? Because that's all we have ever seen IRL and aren't familiar with anything else. Like in Star Trek, most of the aliens have the same needs and drives, but what makes them different is their philosophies and culture, moreso than any innate behavior differences. I have a story I have been working on for years where I'm trying to make some aliens that are really different, and behave differently. I think it can be done, but it takes more thought than what most people are ready to give, and to be fair, the average consumer doesn't really care. They just care that the story moves along at a decent pace, and provides them with some escapism/a break from reality.
