that brought happy memories of going to Portsmouth in the 1960s and '70s lost more navy ships to see. USA CARRIERS 1967 I will remember that day for the rest of my life. Then visiting Portsmouth on Navy Day. thank you for the memories
Love the adventures and the places I get to see! People, animals, scenery, towns.....such fun to watch. Surprises for me, and things I never thought about seeing. ...
I showed this one to my wife; Portsmouth is her home town. She recognized every square foot you walked. Your going on the Victory & seeing the Warrior had her sniffling with homesickness. She spent her childhood in Portsmouth, Southsea, and Gosport. Thank you!
Hi Dan. So glad both you and your wife liked our latest episode. It’s great that your wife was able to reminisce about Portsmouth. The main reason for our visit there was for me to re live my Royal Navy days. It was both interesting and a little emotional for me as I wish I could turn back time.. but as I say.. “only Cher can do that”! Both you and your wife take care and thank you for your lovely comment. 👍
My son joined the Navy just after his 16th birthday as well, he has been in for 6 years now and loves the life, we hardly see him as he is deployed most of the time. Very proud parents.
Hi Steve. You must be so very proud as my parents were too! I loved every second of my time in the RN What ship is your son on currently? What a way to see the world. I try to convince some of our friends children to join up too but lots of them are not interested now. In my day I wanted to join and so did my parents want that for me too. I wish I’d had my time again as I would have done my 30 yrs. please send your son our best wishes. 👍👍👍❤️
I’ve still got my green suitcase with writing all over it.. and my cap tallies. I was in Radar what did you do Mick? Were you in Hamburg with the ship when Doc Holliday died?
Hi Michael. Great to hear from another ‘shippers’. I’m amazed how many old ships company have got in touch through our channel. You must have taken Gurkha almost to decommission? Where in the World did you get to during your time in Gurkha? 👍
@@cruisingontheborder Thanks for reply, was shorebased on Eastbourne in Rosyth when the Falklands kicked off, we all volunteered for sea service in the hopes of getting involved, The Gurkha was taken out of mothballs and towed up to Rosyth where we got it ready. then off to Portland and sent off to West Indies Guardship to relieve a ship of the line. We toured loads of Islands, Florida and Georgia, when we got back we were Pompey based, I went off to do leadership and RPs courses. It was a great ship and fantastic ships Coy. Actually got half a dozen Gurkha soldiers onboard as well, was weird watching them dry shaving with their little knives in the mornings. I left just before decommissioning.
Thanks for the info Michael. I was an RP too! Last week I actually met up with my mate from the Gurkha, Gwillam Williams. Not seen him for 45yrs! It was mad. We only had 40 mins to chat so we hardly touched the surface. Where are you living now Michael?
Hi Michael i left mob in 99 after 22, re-educated me self got into IT networking, worked at Scottish Parliament then for local council, retired early 2016 now live in Cowdenbeath@@cruisingontheborder
Just watching your Portsmouth video from 3 months ago which i had seemed to have missed somehow! Really enjoy watching your videos. Never been on narrowboat but we have many canals around us in South Cheshire. We are not too far from Nantwich but occasionally it is nice to walk the dog along the canal if and when we get the chance it is so relaxing, as much as it is watching your videos and relaxing at the same time. The POrtsmouth video brought memories back. We visited Victory and i am 5ft 9 and i banged my head on the either going down the steep steps in or out. It was nice you had things explained to you, which there was no one to explain things so it was a matter or reading the details, but it is so interesting. I see they have the deck covered and i dont think we were able to see under it. Will carry on watching and enjoying your videos. I following many others also. Thanks As Robbie Cummings keeps saying - keep cranking! x
Hi Sandra. Thank you for your lovely comment. We are glad you like our channel and that your getting time to get through our back catalogue. The Portsmouth episode was so great for me (M) to do as I was in the Royal Navy for a few years and that’s the first time I’d been back since leaving. We spent a few months in/near Nantwich in 2021 as we bought our boat from there. Nantwich is a lovely place with really good moorings. You live in a nice part of the country in Cheshire. We have family in that area so visit a fair bit. Thanks again and we hope you continue to enjoy our channel. 👍❤️
Hi again Ken. Glad you liked our latest episode. Thank you too for your service with the US army. Long may the close associations last between the US and British forces. Thanks for your nice comment and we hope you like our future episodes too. 👍
Hi John, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a comment. We are glad you enjoyed that episode. It was really great for Michael as he was in the Royal Navy and so it brought back a lot of memories. We post a new vid every Wednesday so be sure to subscribe please so you will be the first to know when it’s ready to watch Thanks again John. Take care 👍❤️
Hi I spent 2 days walking around Portsmouth went on Nelson’s ship it’s a big wow checked out the Marry Rose when it was getting washed by that solution looked at how they spliced ropes and twisted them it was very interesting
Hi Nigel. Thank you for taking the time to leave us a comment The dockyard is so very interesting isn’t it. We loved our visit. It was especially memorable for Michael as he was in the Royal Navy 👍❤️
What a great episode this was, and wide ranging, covering everything from the great English summer through our naval heritage and then back to cruising, well done, fabulous !!!
Hi John. So glad you liked our latest episode. We tried to give a flavour of the Royal Navy through the years and also a little of our life onboard Border Reiver. Thank you for your lovely comment. Take care. 👍
Hi David. Thank you for your nice comment and we are so glad you liked our latest episode. It must have brought back some fond memories of your fathers time in the Fleet air arm and his time on those huge ships. The Vengeance was a big carrier and now you look at the Prince of Wales and it’s sister ship on the video and it makes you wonder how your father would have felt during his time on board the Vengeance, I think she ended up with the Australian Navy at the end of her time? Take care David and thanks again for your lovely comment. 👍
Hi David. Yes I was aware that HMS Vengeance is now a sub. It’s sad when shoos get scrapped. HMS Gurkha, one of the ships I served in went to Indonesia and was scrapped from there. I have such fond memories of my time in the RN and I wish I’d stayed in longer but hey ho life moves on for us all.
Hi Steve. We are glad you liked our latest episode. We tried to keep it interesting. There was so much more we could have shown also but glad you liked it. Take care Steve. 👍
Very interesting, just a pity the guy telling you the range if the shell doesn't know his miles to km conversion. 10km isn't 7.5 miles but just over 6.2 miles. Wonder how long he's been telling folk that 🤔. Been to the yard but due to restoration work couldn't get on the ships. The museum was good though. Bet you wish you had some of that warmth now that its turned chilly. See you on the next one.
Hi Peter. Yes I did think when he was talking that his maths didn’t sound that accurate. He was very enthusiastic though so we didn’t have the heart to question him. We really enjoyed our day there though. Glad you liked the episode. Take care.
Hi Trevor. Glad you liked the episode. Must have been nice to see your ‘manor’ on the episode. I’ve always liked Portsmouth and spent many years there in the Royal Navy. Gosport is one of my old stomping grounds! 😄
Hi David. I was a radar operator and navigators yeoman. I wish I could join up again right now but sadly I can’t. Thanks so much for your comment David.
Cool video thanks! Ordering the same 18k Advantage (3rd gen). Reason i didnt go DIY is that its cheaper for the Advantage and I can customize my lineset length. Also, this is the reason I hate music in videos. 1. I cant hear you speak. 2. It's often too loud and not necessary. 3. Who cares what I think ;)
Hi. Thank you for taking the time to leave us a comment. We have addressed the music levels in our videos now. Hopefully you will stick with us? and try another episode. Thanks again. Take care 👍

Thank you for the brilliant history tour, really enjoyed it.
Graham, this is Michael's favourite episodes, I think he would join the Navy again tomorrow if he could!!!
