It was great to talk with Chris at the show. Seriously this is the most impressive of the Part 103 planes I've seen in this type, and the video doesn't really do justice to how clean and well laid out the aircraft was from spinner to tailwheel. I'm super excited to see these taking off and I look forward to seeing some in person. Might even have to get one with a little Verner on it as an E-AB runabout.
He has done a remarkable job that boy... Quite impressed. It has an extremely professional look about it and you can see he has spent a lot of time in solid works getting it perfect. Come on FAA.. Give 103 an increase payload for another 5 gallons. If the price is right he is going to have to reduce that delivery time yet that's a nice problem to have.
Paul Dutton even 7 gallons of fuel to give at least a solid 3 hours of flight time would be nice.. at that point it could be used as a commuter plane or for sight seeing.. strap a camera under it and fly over historic or scenic sights n broadcast it
Of course, raising the fuel capacity knocks it out of the Ultralight category and puts it into the ranks of E-AB aircraft. No problem there. The various options allow you to pick exactly what you want. I noticed your website mentioned an upcoming 65 horse power 4-stroke engine option that would put it solidly into the E-AB category. I'm really impressed!
I would hate for the FAA to revisit the Part 103 regulations. Part 103 accomplishes what it needs to do (hang gliders, paragliders, and ultralights) without the complications of licensing and additional requirements. Look at all the regulations for drone operators. I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility that the FAA / Congress could rescind Part 103 altogether under the right circumstances.
This Badland kit plane has to be the nicest most plane appearing "part 103 legal" aircraft of any of the kits available today. It looks like a real outfit clone but yet is Still a true ultra light requiring No Pilots License ! Great job very professional kit with solid performance numbers. It will be very interesting to see where these new FAA Sport Plane regulations coming by 2020 take us.
Hi Dan I have been following you for years now and I have been looking for a Ultralight aircrafts, experimental aircraft and I have just saved up enough to purchase my first part 103 aircraft and I have to say I'm in love with this badlands airplane. Thanks for sharing this story.
I thought I wanted to buy a cessna something but I'm really leaning toward 103 problem is airports near me are controlled maybe I can register it ELSA get a Light Sport PPL. Medical is crazy to pass the FAA is out of their minds even doctors who know way more then they do think they are crazy with all the tests they want me to get .
@@flyswryan We'd lose some weight in the tail. Would need small tires for sure. Probably smaller 30hp engine too. That's not as bad as people think. Still wicked fun. I bet a nose wheel would be around 8-9lbs. Tough guess.
if it only came with a tricycle wheels this would make a good addition to my stable of aircraft. except i would use the verner 3, 4 stroke, 40 hp, instead of the 2 stroke Polini
I agree, I want one with a Verner on it. There again, with the Verner I'm pretty-sure you'd be too heavy for Part 103: the Verner 3V is approx 17kg heavier than the little Thor 250. That's not so bad because I'm confident that Verner will pull its weight and then some, and based on the Legal Eagles flying around it'll sound great and look good doing it. But it does take it to being a different class of airplane and costing an extra 3-4k
@@tomcoryell There have actually never been an exchange of any plans, ever, since the beginning, even before JW. Ask JM, he'll tell ya. lol I bought a trailer full of "scrap metal" and got a receipt. That was the just of my "rights". We build 100% Badland Aircraft. ;) It's so much fun, you gotta try it!
"The airplanest looking ultra light out there" Chris you succeeded! I'd like an F5+ please :) What size trailer will I need? (My wife has the garage - I tried...) I already have a glider ppl.
i grew up hearing and still believe and tell same as guest ..... "the only stupid question is the one ya dont ask" and yes as a matter of fact i did have an awesome childhood
There is a bloke in Germany that has managed to make a frame using carbon tubing. Not sure but think it is a mini Corsair replica(found it - www.jh-aircraft.de, however the technique he uses to join tube to tube is new. Not sure if it lends itself to fast construction yet clearly no welding involved so could be faster construction but above all it is uber strong with all junctions in compression whilst being very light. The frame construction method might lend itself to the Badlands and facilitate reduced build times. It's worth checking out I think.
The cruise speed should be whatever puts the wing in an efficient AOA. I think the small Polini has to be run at high RPM, but you'd like to turn it down to half-power but then the aircraft would probably be mushing.
Not russian.. Good to hear there's no Russian interference. LOL I love this plane and want one, but my budget does is not on par with my bucket list dreams. Unless of course you can make this hang glider pilot dreams come true and video all of it to pay for it. HINT!!!!!! Much like your buds gave you a break, I really need one too. I will build it. You will come. LOL Let's do this!!!!!!!!!!!! I see the wing is very Dragonfly inspired, tried tested and proven by our Aussie friends and Danny Lang my tug pilot. In fact, with the bigger motor, could aerotow HG pilots up and maybe compete with in the HG community with the Dragonfly for that purpose. Sell a lot more kits for this reason. ehh? I hope there's no stupid questions here?????
Request please: can you put a direct link to the website of the person or plane your interviewing? I click on you website and it's a big ole goose egg to find anything about this video. Even using the search bar for "badlands" turns up nothing. Thanks for your considerations.
This aircraft shows that with proper engineering, Part 103 is no obstacle. Such an impressive looking plane, this F3.

Loving the square body dually as much as the plane!
Miss that truck.
I seriously want one of these Aircraft with the 36 hp engine. Beautiful work 👍🏼
Yeah it's a no brainer to get almost 2 1/2 times the climb rate, super sweet option🌻

I like his enthusiasm.
that is an airplane looking ultralight..... what a great design.
I'd like to see a nice side by side comparison of this vs the merlin lite. Both fit the 103 criteria, look cool, have similar specs.

Nice looking aircraft. Hard to believe it's Part 103.
Fantastic plane, even better interview, thanks Dan :)
WOW thats a great little plane. Itd be perfect for me a first time owner. Great video

Awesome build and design
Very impressive part 103 and it makes some other 103 planes look stupid.
Lol. Sheesh.
Looking forward to f5
Might be nice if you started putting links to the pages of the featured aircraft.
WHY? They are supplied in the video at least 3 times.

I'd like to see a nose wheel version with light weight doors for flying in cooler weather.
How much do they weigh? With ultralights, it’s all about the weight.
doors are available as an option per his website...
I bet we could pull it off. Let's build it!!!!

With James Wiebe abandoning the UltraCub, it opened the entry for another development of KitFox Lite, even before the unfortunate fire.
He bought the plans etc. from Weibe.

An 8.5'W x 20'L enclosed will work if you remove one flaperon. This adds about 18min to the process, x6 bolts. Open trailer minimum is 7'w x 18'L.

My dad has a high performance Kolb Firestar powered by Kawasaki 440...by weight, stall, 103 legal. By top speed, fuel cap, etc, not so much.
Would love to fly one with a Kawi like that. Hoho-yeah.

Most of them like the 5800 rpm area, give or take 200rpm. Every engine has a sweet spot. Trim helps.

It is based on the Kitfox Lite - BRS has a mount for it.

7:31. Are those the attaching cables for BRS?
This craft did NOT have a ballistic chute mounted on it, that I saw. BRS has mounts for both a softpack and canister mount.
Curious, can you cheat on weight with an extra 5 gallon fuel tank

Looks exactly like the UK built Sherwood Kub other than this has flapêrons rather than flaps and airelons.

Can i fly around in the clouds in 25 degree weather safely in this plane?
You can only fly an ultralight in VFR meaning you have to be able to see the ground. 25 degree weather isn't a problem if you are dressed for it.
Has it ever actually flown??
It shows it flying in the video!
Dang bro
Grrr ... I wish these guys would stop talking long enough to eat some of that cotton candy.
If I could eat cotton candy all week at Osh, I'd be as happy as cat.
